A conversation with Shrijit, Class of 2006, IIM-Ahmedabad

The ace quizzer on the forums, the guy who hardly posts anywhere other than the "quizzophile" thread, the University Challenge 2003 National & Indo-UK Champion, the guy whom Siddhartha Basu recalled by name during Bizquizzitive at Confluence 2004, and yea, he also happens to have a 1600/1600 in GRE and a 6/6 on the AWA 😉 , Shrijit P.

Under-Graduation: S.P.C.E. - Bachelor of Engg. - I.T. ; Fresher
CAT percentile: 99.92
Final Calls : BLACKI + IIMC's PGDCM

CAT Fundae:

----> Realize that CAT is not just a two hour test, it is something that has to start once you start off your preps
----> Stay focused
----> Time Management. Shrijit managed to ace the verbal section in 30mins flat !!
----> Take practice tests regularly.
----> Read a lot

Shrijit likes these @ A:

----> The Quality of People
----> Each guy has something special
----> High Competition, which has the undesirable effect of tending to disillusionment for some people The strict academic schedule is something that he believes is undesirable, but on the flip side, believes it is something that teaches planning

And Why does he like PaGaLGuY.com??

----> The diverse crowd
----> The variety of backgrounds in terms of work-ex that one gets to interact with
----> Varied interests of the Junta
----> The fact that people are ready to help in spite of being anonymous

Number of hours one sleeps @ A, Shrijit believes, is striking a balance between how much you wanna sleep and how much work you have. And playing on the LAN is a major stress-buster for Srijit.

life @ IIMA:

----> Teaches you a lot, both inside and outside class
----> One becomes mentally tougher

Survive thro' A with these:
----> Surviving first year @ A is crucial. Don't give up

----> Due to nature of environs, people tend to become isolated. So an attempt should be made to reach out to others rather than staying within themselves.

----> People should be able to communicate & Share (err, that shouldn't be difficult for hardcore PGites, right 😉 )

----> People should be able to communicate & Share (err, that shouldn't be difficult for hardcore PGites, right 😉 )Shrijit believes people come to IIMA primarily for learning.

And since Shrijit is also a 1600/1600 on GRE and a 6.0/6.0 on the AWA, his tips on cracking these:

Cracking GRE:

----> It's a crime not to score 800 in quant 😉
----> Have an extensive vocabulary for cracking verbal section
----> Get into the habit of reading extensively. Always helps.
----> Learn to interpret language (RCs)

Cracking Analytical Writing:

----> Say things precisely and logically.
----> Find loopholes and present well
----> Stay away from fancy words !!

Sound-Bytes:

----> Life @ IIMA is a virtual entity, an abstract concept (Have to admit, the most candid confession by an IIMAer so far !!)

----> Its attitude that matters. Do not get bogged down by setbacks.

see these errors don't matter a lot but even then high standards of PG hav to be kept up...

Article by Shrijit....ummm...i must say ...desrves the needed commendation.Knw wt Shrijit,wt attracted me the most in ur article was(wait......not ur pic)was oodles of confidence wich u hav within u.U r ,no doubt,Monsieur Green
Though thr were quite a few old repeated things in ur article....bt u managed it quite well thru.
Allrite,my question--will u lemme knw the limitation of 'so-called attitude' dat one shud have??
N nothr thing-do u think a person who never gets 'bogged down by set-backs'again n again is set to win at a later stage?Wt abt people who've nvr had any kinda setbacks?

firstly, i didnt write the article .. urMad did, after a "conversation" with me

secondly, everyone has setbacks..some time or the other. And there definitely will be quite a few, once u get into IIMA. The first accounting quiz for instance.

I had followed the UC 2003 closely and can say that it was a comprehensive win against the big guns in the final, especially after that nail biting finish against SVCE (if I'm not wrong) in the initial stages. Congrats for that! Btw Shrijit, coming to CAT, what was your strategy in aceing the verbal section in 30 min (considering the CAT 2003 paper pattern) and what sort of scores you used to get?

hi shrijit,

i read your article. u were saying something about extensive reading.. actually i am aiming at either CAT 2006 or 07. and i am not that extensive reader. i read newspapers and some magazines. what kind of reading are u talking about. what kind of reading did you do?

my vocab is not good enough to clear either CAT or GRE. i would be glad if you can guide me in that respect.

thanks and regards,

abhijit kale.
