Interview Questions: The type to expect

Your MBA admissions interview will have a variety of questions being asked, a lot of them depending upon your profile. Yet there are 4-5 broad categories that get covered in almost every interview. You should be very well prepared to answer these questions. Although we don't suggest you mug up your answers, but be prepared to answer these questions in any form they are asked.

Since your life will have a limited number of examples to quote from, say about 5-6 key stories, prepare these well. In all likelihood, they will fit a range of questions. If you have already gone over these stories before the interview, it will come naturally to you to pull them out from your memory (as opposed to not remembering these stories because you never practiced them earlier).  If you had created a brainstorming sheet before you started to write your essays, go over that several times- there maybe a wealth of information tucked in those anecdotes. Lastly, know your application inside out, specially for the ISB interview.

These six broad categories are:

1. Introduction. A few examples of related questions are:

a. Walk me through your resume.

b. What are you key job responsibilities?

c. What do you like most at work?

2. What are your career goals? Be prepared to answer:

a. Your short term goals

b. Your long term goals

c. Why MBA? Why Now?

3. Why X school (the b-school where you are interviewing)? Questions may include:

a. What academic courses will you take?

b. Which clubs will you join?

c. How will you contribute?

d. How did you research our b-school?

4. Behavioral questions- these questions will ask you to explain a situation and your role in it. Questions could be around your leadership capability, team work, handling difficult situations. A few examples are:

a. How do you define your leadership style?

b. Give your most significant achievement.

c. Tell us of a time when you failed.

d. Tell us of a situation where you managed team conflict/ a difficult team member

5.  Personal qualities related. The interviewers always want to know you at a personal level; these questions, along with others, help determine your fit with the b-school:

a. Tell us your three strengths.

b. What do you consider a major weakness?

c. Describe a hobby

d. Your volunteering work experience

6. For the end, do prepare two-three questions that you would like to ask the admissions committee/ interviewer

From some previous years' posts and my own personal experience I have gathered that Skype interview lack enthusiasm and feel like a dead  rubber.  Why is it the case ?  and does it mean that you can make a mark in face to face interview better than in a skype interview.  Just want to know what experts think. Mine was a skype interview and could be classed as a normal 15 min interview where they did not ask anything apart from normal why ISB and why now ? It also does not have a one word essay as well as any impromptu speech on anything of that sort.

I am a non indian(UK passport holder) candidate.

Got the call just now...10 AM...6th Feb...Delhi...

BANGALORE people- Is there anyone who hasn't received the Application Completion mail or I am the only one? :/

It's today or next year for Delhi guys !!!

ISB says candidates will get to know today itself whether there will be interviews for Delhi candidates (in Delhi or outside).

I have one question. What is the best way to do a post-mortem analysis of each essay for the interview? Do I create N number of possible questions on each para and frame answers for them? any better way?

Do we need to carry awards certificates which we mentioned in the application.. Can they ask to show..
