I have just finished my BE in computers from Mumbai University. But my real interest are in films n filmmaking. I have just joined a course on film ediiting and to be more safe i am planning to do MBA or a similar such management course. I heard about MICA and their programme sounded very interesting. I want to know from ppl who hav already joined MICA or from someone who has a good knowledge about their course whether it is useful in the field of films . I knows its an ideal course of advertising and probabaly for Media Organisations like Sony n Zee. But these are again more of television based companies. Plz help me out and even of its off topic just post in ur answer if u feel it might help me . thank You.

Dear Buddy,
Glad to find another guy who's interested in MICA. MICA is my dream institute but I want to go in for advertising. I just wanted to tell you that MICA is only into Advertising, corporate communication, Marketing research, Brand Management, Account Planning etc. The closest you can get to film making is Ad Film making. If you're interested, it is the best course and the best institute in the country. However, if you are focussing fully on Film Making, you'd better look somewhere else.

Anyway best of luck with your decision.
Don Corleone

Check out the official website if you like......(www.mica-india.net)

I agree to Corleone's views about MICA.

Being a 2nd year student of MICA's PGPCM, i can tell u, that the four specialisations as mentioned earlier viz., Brand Mgmt, Account Planning, Market Research and Media Mgmt(WHich involves Planning and buying etc) is far from your interests in Film Making. The aim of this course is to churn out managers for the communications and mktg industry.

MICA has a short term creative crafting course which maximum prepares u for the ad film making part. we also have a short term course in broadcasting mgmt, and a very learned teacher called Prof. Mathew who teaches something called Film Studies, which deals with social constructs and society in general. That perspectivre might help u, But otherwise, I think I am sorry to disappoint u that there is no real course which deals with overall aspects for FIlm making.

Wishing u best of luck for ur endeavours
Saunak

Okie thanx guys ...actually i should have framed my question differently .... i want to know if it would help me get into a film production company ...so basically i am talking about handling the various projects without getting into the technicalities of film making? And also someone told me it would be helpful if i want to run a multiplex or cinema theatres ? is it true ?

Well Then I think the short term broadcasting mgmt course as well as the PGPCM course is a good fit for you then. MICA has always been exploring oppurtunities to have an enriching relationship with most players in this field.

SOme of the Broadcasting mgmt students were absorbed into prime film prodn cos like Zee, Sony, Balajis etc....

Hope that answers ur queries. And I feel Wit the perspective u get from MICA, U can run almost any businesses. Entertainment would definitely be a core competency

ALl the best

thanx again ....I will definitely try for MICA ...are there any1 else here with similar interests?

this info has really helped in deciding whether to apply for MICA. Thanks guys.

p.s: MICA WAS MY DREAM INSTITUTE...but goofed up in cat this time....

Same here dudes!!!! MIC was a dream institute but goofed up CAT this time. I feel MIC should give a call to everybody who applies. After all they conduct their own test (MET) after this. Wht do u say??????

hey everyone...

nice to see so many ppl interested in Mica....i took the cat only for mica but am quite disheartened with my performance.... lets hope i can clear the first stage....i agree with someone who said that mica shud be far more leniant in calls since they have the met after this...i jus want to ask ppl studyin in mica wat they predict the cutoff to be....have posted this in other forums as well but havent got any replies.....

karishma

yo guys!
cheer up! why put on the gloomy faces? nowadays, i check PG religiously to see if there is some info on my **dream** insti MICA... and guess what? if u have the time, patience and the moolah to spend on internet.. u can unearth a lot of stuff from the previous year's posts! 😁 ...kasam se!

just do a search on MICA AND MET, LO and BEHOLD! shazzzzam...the pandora's box has just been opened!

there is this Particularly interesting thread wherein our seniors(hope to make them my seniors!), who were in the same boat as we are in now...have posted anguishing tales of their GD and PI experiences...take a look...

http://www.pagalguy.com/cat/viewtopic.php?t=2909

am sure it will help all those cluless about the MET, and scratching away their skulls thinking "what shud i expect for the MICA GD/PI"...

from what i have read, MICA starts giving out calls only by the END of march, and they have their MET/GD/PI in April(that was the case for the '04-'06 batch atleast).... and then there was also some talk on an"upper cutoff", wherein ppl with %s > 98 were not selected, even though some even got IIM-K,L calls!
the funda used by MICA being "Is this guy really.... ****reaaaaaally*** interested in taking up a media related job?" thats the question that seems to drive them.

now, i guess for someone from a s/w bkg, it would be pretty tough convincing the panel, as to why he/she would like to take a media job which pays 1.5L->2.5L pa, when he can cooly make double the amount in any MNC! .....those with work ex in that field...be prepared nail this Q.

so there.... best of luck junta. 😃 hang in there!

cheers,
Sunny.

I need to know from any of the seniors or any one else here what my chances of getting a call from MICA are with the following:

VA/RC : 99.95%le
QA: 81.56%le
DI: 62.11%le
Overall: 98.48%le

Additionally, I have 3.5 months of work experience in Advertising, in Client Servicing.

Please let me know

Hi Peepul!

Will some one have an idea if i stand a chance of getting a call...

VA: 89
QA:93
DI: 73

Overall: 92.56

You think i have any chance? do let me know... I am engg. but i have work ex. in a Market Research firm..

Hi,

Thought i'd share some of my experiences during the Gd/PI stage.

Mid-March: There had been techie problem at MICA's end and my name found mention in their first ,but not in the second list. I remember making frantic calls to the Registrar only to be assured that my call letter was on its way. I couldn't stand the frustration after having gone through a cancelled paper in Nov. Neways, ma lettah arrives. Life's rosy again. And i continue GD/PI prep. Devoured every biz mag and paper I could lay my hands on.

April 11th:
The GD and MET: Land up at JBMIS, my MET centre, an hour in advance. Bump into two of the simplest segments one finds in any B-school interview (or should I say C-school?)-- the techies and the not-so-techie. The MET is a feel good experience. I finish with the question "Describe a day in the life of a MICAn". The interview goes off even better. Am asked to speak against co-education and then 10 mins into the discussion the topic is turned on its head and we are to ramble on "for" the cause. Come out with mixed feelings. Up against me were Infoscians, VJTI-ians and a gal who had calls from 4 IIM's, XL and SPJain.
Frankly don't know wat to make of my chances.

The finale: The interview was much calmer and casual than I had expected it to be. Among the panelists are a Prof from Johns Hopkins, the PGPCM director and a Veep from Lintas. Wide grins all round as I enter to take my seat. Something is said about how I'd make a better politician than a manager. Then the attack begins. Why MICA? What can I contribute? Am I aware of how different this course is as compared to a conventional MBA? What is MICA's brand equity?( thank god for that ET supplement 😁 ) .What would I like to specialize in at MICA?My interview lasts for all of 30 mins. But strangely I dont feel drained.

Sometime in May: Can't say I didn't feel confident. But at the end of that long tunnel , theres always only a glimmer of hope. I made it.

When i look back 6 months in time I see some things that worked for me:

--Clarity on why I wanted to go to MICA as against a B-school.

-- Being reasonably well read. It helped during the MET.

-- Keeping calm and NOT pfaffing during the interview.

Some other things you should keep in mind:

-- MICA is probably doubling its intake come June 2005. Anyone with a 93%-ile + should stand a good chance at a MET call.

-- There is no such thing as an upper CAT cut-off at MICA. Ask Dynamica, my classmate and felli PG-ite .

-- Please read up as much as you can on what field you'd like to dive into once ur done with a degree from here.

-- Keep photostats of your application essays. They WILL grill you on what you've written.

-- DO subtly bring out your extracurricular achievements during the course of the application process( in the form or during the i/view).

-- Work-ex is a BIG plus point.

All the best,
Cya at MICA in 2005 & wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Howdy folks...

Back with some more MICA gyaan...
Intro for ppl unfamiliar with me - I'm a first year student of MICA's PGPCM - the 2 year flagship programme.

Let's start with clearing doubts - we never get tired of doing that.

1) MICA is NOT a mass communications school. We don't have courses in print/broadcast journalism and film-making.

2) MICA does NOT have upper cut-offs - thankgawd fer that, Smirnoffication. We DON'T have abysmally low cut-offs either. Reason is that there are some courses which require basic quantitative aptitude. MET does not test what has already been tested in CAT.

3) Yes, MICA's two year programme is about "communications management". The course combines both communications and management subjects and produces managers for the business of communications.

Here are some of the subjects that my batch has covered in the first two terms - maybe it will help in getting an idea of what we do.

Management related
> Indian Business Environment - Macroeconomics
> Marketing
> Principles of Management
> Organizational Dynamics
> Introduction to Accounting
> Basic Business Finance
> Managerial Economics
> Strategic Management
> Consumer behaviour
> Sales Promotion
> Research Methodology

Communications related
> Creative Communication (How to think creatively, write creative briefs etc)
> Introduction to Communication
> Culture and Communication (Evolution of Communication over ages - we get to watch and critique award-winning foreign films in these 2 subjects)
> Advertising Management (The business side of advertising)
> Mass Media in India
> Introduction to Media Planning
> Integrated Marketing
> Public Relations
> Creative Aerobics (The practical aspects of making print and radio commercials - we made our own ad portfolios for this subject)

So far, so good?

Now the summer placement scene: We have a rolling placement process for Summers. Companies started coming in August and will continue till Jan. Some summers recruiters:

Godrej
L'Oreal
Castrol
Motorola
Electrolux
Starcom
TOI - Zoom TV
TAM (Television Audience Measurement)
JWT
Leo Burnett
Lowe-Lintas
IMRB
Research International
TNS Mode
GECIS

There are many more who come for summers as well as finals. The batch of 2006 has only 60 students, but the next batch will probably have 120 in order to meet industry demands. Most of the summers job profiles, irrespective of the company will be related to primary research.

Hope this clarifies more Qs about the PGPCM programme. It's a good, comprehensive course if you have even a little bit of communications focus. You can come to MICA and decide which concentration you want to take up next year.

My GD topic was communications-unrelated. "Should graduation be the minimum qualification for being elected?"
Interview was based on the SOP/ questions asked in form. Also a bit about Indian and international advertising. MET is essentially easy. This year we may have a psychometric test too.

ET, Brand Equity, Pitch, BW, BT, Storyboard on CNBC etc should help a LOT. Please read.

Wishing you all a happy 2005. All the best for MICA calls.

The DI could be a problem area. 70%ile is the safe figure for any one section. Still, you could apply and hope fo the best.
