Well Apurv, excellent work:smile: As I always emphasized core strength of PG lies not in its abundant data but how meticulously we can present them to present and future members in order to derive best outta them.
Good that this thread is sticky and I hope this post of yours will go down as one of those gold mine posts
Hoping to see more like this in future, PG is way ahead of its competitors (or people trying on similar lines) but efforts like yours will raise bar beyond their hopes!........ Thanks a lot:)
Regards,
Andy.
P.S.
Can we have a sticky thread only for the best posts on PG as we often come across many outstanding posts, which we would certainly like to be viewed by more puys, but because of them being from many different areas are not always sure where to put their reference?

this is my experience...hope helps..
Xperience Speaks

hello friends..
..i never thought that someday i wud get enough strength to sit and write something under the thread "Inspiring stories of CAT cracking or The Best of 'All I wanted to speak about CAT"!!!i m not 'that' stuff!!but i feel my story can at least motivate not those people who think they can but those who think they cannot...

i
m from the city of amritsar, known for golden temple and jallianwala bagh but least known as a study centre.its true, the level of studies is not very gud in punjab but still we manage....i was in class 5th when i was send to army school called- sainik school,kapurthala...it was the first time i undertuk serious tests....life there was very tough...learnt a lot of gud things and bad too...was like any other hostel boy-non-serious in studies, serious in all other things-girls,movies,clothes,beers and all other stuffs u understand(no need to mention here!!!)level of studies were all time low in class 9th when my father took me out of it and i was send to nankana sahib public school, samrala.a very small town with no infrastructure.....did 10,+1 & +2 from there...got 80% marks in 10 and 75% in +2 and was at 2nd position in school wid such low scores...!!!

i
opted for medical in +2...my father BADLY wanted me to be a doctor but i was least interested....but still i cudnt say-i cant do it....i was like any other boy doing all the fun in school,i was not like those studious students who keep mugging up all the buks and are very-very serious regarding there careers....then i went to chandigarh for PMT(pre-medical tests for getting admission in mbbs course just like iit-jee) preps and there i was at my worst-no studies even when i wanted to do--only masti!!!result-failed in all PMTs....my father stopped talking to me,my whole family was against me,i had killed all the expectations of everyone...meanwhile my girl friend left me...i dropped a year after +2 for preparing again but all these factors drov me crazy...most of the times i was crying like a baby....a hard body and mind after army training changed to a very sensitive and emotional soul...it was very tough time for me....again came PMTs and again the same result-FAILED:icon_cry:....this was worse then earlier...i was treated like a bad boy in the family and everyone used to say-dont become like kushal...mine was the condition like that of darsheel in taare zameen par-exactly same, difference was i was not mentally-ill and i wasnt getting any support from anybody....:banghead:

but
then somehow i cleared JET exam and got a seat in the hons. physics course in guru nanak dev university at amritsar...conditions started improving but still i was not very studious...just managed to pass my exams...then in second year i decided to go for CAT...but i was very much afraid of my past failures...but still i tried...i joined career launcher.my aim was just to get respectable %ile in cat and getting an ok type b-school for mba....though at first i was gud at learning but in the middle i started losing interest...but again i recollected myself...my score in mocks varied from 55 to 95%iles...i got 95 only 1 time and 3-4 times above 80 and generally i was in seventies....in november 2007 i had no hope that i can clear cat...:crazyeye:

then
after 14th i started losing sleep...i thought again a failure i m going to see...on 17th i reached chandigarh with a blank mind...i was restless as i had not slept for 3 days...my friends there took me out for some fun and wud u believe-at 1.30 am in the night of 17 and morning of 18,we were drinking madly-each one crying over what has happened in his life...i went o bed at around 2 but again got up at 4o'clock because of stomach pain...remained awake till 7 then i tried to sleep a bit but cudnt-in few hours i was about to write cat!!i got up at 7.30 took bath with cold water and got ready...then i heard a song-chak de india after which i got some boost to perform well in cat....then few minutes before cat i was exercising in the examination hall and all were luking amazingly...i was so tired and so sleepy that i wud have fallen down on bed at once if there wud have been no restriction!!

then came cat 2007 in hand...i said to myself-DO YOUR BEST...GIVE WATEVER U HAVE...FIGHT LAST TIME LIKE AN INJURED SOLDIER FIGHTING FOR LIFE....JUST TRY..TRY..TRY...i started with english...this was the first time i started with english,in 13mocks which i gave,i never started wid english...but i need to take risks...i completed english in time...then i reached to di...di was easy and i had done that type of stuff so many times before!!!but i cudnt do it there!!!my mind was exausted...i was checking 6*4=24 atleast 4 times!!!i knew i can do this but i cudnt!!!still i tried...then came quant...i thought it tough...but still i tried...at the end of exam...i thought it was all over...i cudnt even manage a score of 80...

.but then came results---:2gunfire:--CAT-93%ile-----XAT-92%ile----SNAP=70marks----the score might not be great for u getting 99%ile in cat but for people like me...its a big thing yaar.....now-a-days i am giving various gds, interviews, extempores and i hope to make it to some gud b-school of india...not the best one but one of the best....now i feel ki kash agar me cat se pichle 3-4 din thik hota...i wud have managed 99....but now nothing can be done...moreover i m happy with what i have got...by the grace of god and by my feeling of---just give it a try yaar.....i wud like to say u friends------IF I CAN DO,WHY CAN'T YOU?! GIVE WATEVER U HAVE....JUST TRY...TRY...TRY...SOONER OR LATER ONE WHO WINS IS THE ONE WHO THINKS-HE CAN...:grab:
ALL THE BEST

Hi shining_star,
never give up your hopes....
i converted by starting the prep in late july along with hectic work...
that too this is my first CAT.

Focus on the means, and the end will definitely follow.

Hi,

Even i started my prep in Aug only.
I never attended any classroom coaching and bought the second hand CAT coaching material from market. I had 3 years of work exp and there was hectic schedule in office. (Although weekends were free).

The only thing i did seriously was taking every Mock CAT seriously and analyzing them in detail.

I got 99.85 in CAT with 5 IIM calls and finally joining IIM-C.

So, if i can do it, even u can do it. (To add on, i had been an average student in school and college :new_terminator:)

Hey guys,'

read this::

http://www.pagalguy.com/1088185-post310.html

Perhaps, this would be one of the most fascinating and motivating stories for CAT aspirants and ceratinly deserves to be in this thread.....

http://www.pagalguy.com/1088185-post310.html

Cheers,

The last line of yours really made my confidence to the max.... Thanks for the reply...
will be really great if you can write of your journey ,or provide me some mode to talk to you....Thanks again!!

Well, I dont have any special journey. But i will surely like to share some learning from my experience.

1. Always try to learn from your mistakes and make sure not to repeat them. I am sure you will commit every possible mistake once in ur Mock Tests. So make sure not to repeat them in actual CAT. Analyze all ur Mock Test in very detail and see where u went wrong.

2. One important thing, that everyone says "CAT doesnt only test ur Maths or Verbal ability". Anyone can do that paper given double the time. Its ur decision and analysis ability, which is under test there. I did only 10 QA in CAT 2007 and got all right. So its ur accuracy and question picking ability which matters.

3. Take some time to gather ur strengths and weakness. Try to overcome ur weakness but dont crib or cry over that. No one is perfect. Play on ur strength.
Very often, all you need is a pep-talk to get you out of a temporary mind blockage during your arduous CAT prep. Sometimes, that pep-talk can be given only by someone who's been through that pain him/herself

This is something to which a lot of people might not agree. All the great experiences that have made a mark here are really good. The only thing that bugs me here is how this motivation thing works for all of u puys (I have seen a lot of people using 'puy' in place of 'guy', I guess must do so as well, am I missing the rationale behind?). I really find it difficult to understand how, motivation works - it has never worked for me as I wanted it to.

It is really good to read the experiences as a story and enjoy the happy ending (in most of the cases). But the trouble here is that either we (or rather I) look for a soothing empathetic plot or identify a hero out of the narrator. Yes they all are heroes but the post is to make a hero out of you and not to make a fan out of you. India is such a beautiful (sarcastic, without any intention to offend, but to portray the grey emotion) country that in 99% or more of the cases, anyone who will succeed (or for that matter make it to one of the cherished institutes) is bound to be a success story, fighting the paralyzed education system, caste based reservation system, social back stabbing and stigma pressures, the 'TAG' thing, the unsatisfactory job work or opportunities etc .. etc .. etc.

One of the good ways to utilize the posts is to identify oneself as a potential 'hero' and try to get there as one of the success stories, but that's again very subjective; motivation is something that may catalyze your efforts but at the end of the day what matters is the efforts put in. Don't get me wrong, as I said earlier the only thing is that I wonder how this motivation thing works for u all.

Mods,
I have a request-did NOT know where else to put this up.
Could you include the "all i wanted to speak about CAT" stories of 2007 and 2008.Some of the experiences are missing in this inspiring stories list.
If that is done,i'm sure many of us in PG would indeed feel very grateful.
Thanks again and sorry if am spamming.

Alright, with CAT 2010 just around the corner, here's wishing you guys Good Luck...Just thought I'll chip in with my 2 cents...a brief background first, I had a work ex of 3 years when I gave CAT last yr...It was my one and only shot at CAT (@ saumya19...here u go...does this help?)..
Now, I would say you shouldn't look at it as an examination that'll make or break your future...believe me, last yr. CAT was a test of nerves...difficulty level had a minimal role to play. So, with a completely new pattern of examination, with all the fiasco happening, Media attention and what not...people who aced are the ones who walked in, decided that they don't give a damn about the newspaper's speculations, about whether the process was fair or unfair (pointless question in the first place...), had fun while solving the paper, and came out as if the last two hours were nuthing special...believe me, a bit of nonchalance and "what the heck" attitude helps...Don't get bogged down by worries and tension at this moment...its just an exam, its not a foolproof system, all you can do is be calm, do ur best, have fun while doing it, and leave the rest to fate.

@Gildroy,
about the motivation thing...I know what you mean...it takes too much effort to feel motivated or even upbeat at this juncture of life. Here's what I would suggest- tell yourself you're the smartest darn person in the whole world..well, if not smartest, definitely among the smarter ones...Motivation is achieved through Self Actualization (Maslow's theory of needs- 1st yr MBA stuff ;-)) i.e. realizing ur potential...so what I'm saying is, reverse the process...Don't try something to assess your smartness, your intelligence...tell urself, you ARE smart, you ARE intelligent and nothing in the world (no exam, however big it may be) can change that...feeling superior to your usual self will bring out the best in you..

Now that you've done whatever you could...do not resort to last minute marathon practice sessions....go through concepts and formulas in Quant, be confident and remember its not as much a test of intelligence and brainpower as it is of nerves...

All the best....(don't forget to indulge guys...whatever you love...movies, music, sitcoms....indulge yoursleves, feel good, do stuff you love doing...)

just wanted to add-

sleep well, very very important...you wouldn't wanna feel cranky on the exam day...

Again, all queries go to the relevant thread. Irrelevant posts here will be deleted.

and Management subject' because I am an average human being and can't go to his 'levels' in communication. Then after sleeping over it for about a week, I thought of sharing it with the community for two reasons.

If you claim to be an average human being then why do you call yourself a 'Guru' (your username).....use a more subtle 'average' name instead

MgtGuruPune Says
All of us know how much money pass hands in B-Schools ranking.

What makes you think that money is passed around in the rankings? It is done on a user-to-user basis, not by a panel of experts.

1. Is it right to show such an authority on a platform meant for sharing which we don't experience on international forums and many Indian forums also?
Well whether you are posting on international or rural forum , one needs to understand the rules and regulations before posting ,so i cant comment on your post as i have not seen it but , may be it was not according to the rules and regulations , and so your post was removed. Hope you read the disclaimer at the time of registeration

May be my experience is an exception and not happened with anyone else.
Please think, are we playing in hands of so-called 'net-entrepreneurs' to help create multi-million dollar business? As they allow only those things to be posted on the forum that generates revenue for them and no free-thoughts. All of us know how much money pass hands in B-Schools ranking. Is it fair, shouldn't we do something about it?
.
Well if PG is earning money , it is doing so in ethical ways , and its helping millions of aspirants across the globe , and if it does cash in , there should not be any problem. its not cheating anyone , as long as one stays within the boundary of certain predefined rules one can write , whatever one wants

And again your post is at a wrong place , as this thread is meant for discussion on experiences about CAT , so it may be the case that all of our posts will be deleted, as its irrelevant to the stated topic

All the best

Hi all!!!
This is a generic post and um sorry to place it here.
@Mods-If u feel this is of any worth for even a single fella then make it reach the right place. Its a request.
Before I begin lemme jus tell u briefly bout myself. An IT enginner with 3 yrs of exp with TCS n INFY the 2 biggest brand names. Started givin MBA entrances since 2006.Always securin pretty decently. Made it to the final list of SCMHRD n IMT but decided not to join. Now comes the purpose of this post. Offlate I have seen so many grim and sad post sayin the end f d world for them post any result comin out. At the same time do find loads f negative vibes flowin down amongst us. C'mon ppl u ol can do a loat bttr than that. U r the youth of this nation n best asset n u ppl goin don on jus a single blow. I sumhw cnt bliv this.
Here's a small example from my own very life. Last year jus 1 month b4 CAT my mom expired. Imagine my state of mine. had to rush bak handle my family responsibilities and came bak to Pune jus a week b4 CAT. N on top f dat IT ppl can understnd hw a 1 month leave takes toll on ur wrk lyf. I was literally slogging. Olmost had decyded to quit. But then my friend said. This month was crucial for polishing agreed and time was tough to concentrate but ur spirits shdnt dampen. Jus go and give ur best shot. its not a bloody university exam that u need crammin n muggin up.U r ready for it wen frm deep down u feel dat u ready for it. N u r ready buddy". I was stunned by this attitude of his. Was elated n I went gave CAT n secured 98.5+ percentile missed few biggies by .XX percentiles but got cald frm IIMK. Even though cudnt make it to the final list but its OK. I learnt the best possible lesson f lyf dat even IVY league colls won't b able to teach. Never say die. Never back down. Never give up. I will keep comin no matter wat happens coz I know my place N I know its tough to get thr but not impossible. After all Mt. Everest is not for every tom **** and Harry mountaineer. its for d chosen few. N I know U ol got that inside u. Jus dnt give up now.
As for negative vibes. Fellows we olwez cry bout few gettin undue advantage. But remember that its u whose ur biggest competitor .f9 one s gettin sum undue adnvtg but den u trusted urslf wen u started ur journey ryt. Was there any negative vibe then. So it shdnt b thr now. U trust urslf and dats y u r here reading this. Imagine u being a CEO 2mrw of a start up compny faisin direct competition from giants and masters of crafts like Indira Nooyi,KM shaw, mark Zukkerberg,Warren Buffet!!!(2 heavy I guess. But IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!!!).Then r u jus goin to step down widout facin them statin they hv an undue competition. No right. SOME GOALS R SO WORTH THAT ITS EVEN GLORIOUS TO FAIL ACHIEVING THEM.Let there b ups and downs. Let there b dayz n nytz. But dnt eva let urslf fall down in the grip f night. If not today 2mrw u come bak and get wat u truely deserve. Faith n hard work. We will do it until we will achieve it.
Remeber GOAL-
Santiage Munez to his coach-The only person who can say that I am not gud enuf is u but even then, I may not agree wid u:)
The pursuit of happiness-
Never let anyone else tell you that you are good or bad in anything.
N finally my mantra durin xamz:
I am at war wid myself and it looks like I am winning :)

We shall overcome sumday,
Vishwaroop

PS: Sorry for spamming. But I know I had sumthin to share n I did it honestly from d bottom of ma heart and um not sorry for dat. N if even a single ppl from here can take sumthin outta dis and sumday in the future mail me and say Vish I made it to IIMx, XL or any dream coll, I will think the purpose is served.
