Gone are those days when we used to watch news for half an hour a day. Earlier there used to be few news channel and topics never exceeded for more than an hour. Compare it with todays news channels. There are umpteen number of news channels broadcasting news 24 hours. Todays news channels capture almost all the activities happening around us. Soon a day will come when you will be able to know what your neighbors are doing on news channels.

Well PG guys, lets discuss, why the sudden hype in media??

These 24 hour news channels have become so desperate to get viewers that they have started making news outta anything. Recently they aired the news where a car was making rounds of a number of cities and it had no one on the driver's seat. Some even termed it supernatural.

When whole country got glued to the TV, they come out with the news that the car was being driven by the guy who was sitting on the front-left seat.:|

And if someone's son/daughter elopes with the lover, the correspondents would encircle the parents and ask lame questions 'aap iske baare mein kya kehna chahenge', 'aapko kaisa mahsoos ho raha hai'

The day is not far when they might start airing things going inside bedrooms. Be scared, be very scared.

D_S, yeah I too saw that news!! Man these people hype anything and everything. The activities which are happeing around us, were happening many yrs ago. so why hype it now?
Half an hour news channels have become 24hr news channels, and they dont seem to be running out of news!!
News topic ranges from anything to everyhting.

The day is not far when they might start airing things going inside bedrooms. Be scared, be very scared.

True man... Very true!!
News Channels - Is it hyped -- Yes or what? -> What else? ;)

A routine in a News Channel in India:
1. To give a Breaking News every 2 hrs.
2. To make gossip news as top story rather than other National Stories, most recent being "Abhiskek-Ash Pooja" making top news.
3. Start a poll on masala news item like "Who is the best singer/dancer in reality show?" and then earn money via SMS.. :|

Hindi news channels have gone from bad to worse, some of the English News Channel shows are still fine. Indian News Channel wala should take BBC News/CNN as benchamrk and try and reach that standard.

Definitely hyped...

Take for instance today's photo of Kiran Mazumdar and Vasundhara Raje.....economic times front page....which currently is doing rounds in my company as a e-mail forward

Mridul

Right said Mahip..... These SMS fundas just above my head.....

"If you like the the news just vote by seding an SMS to XXXX". I guess SMS has become a money making machine for Media industry!!

and what about the "tickers" which keep running at the bottom of the screen. I have seen a research which kinda proves that these divert the attention of the viewers from the screened news...
BBC/CNN still don't use it...
to the fact news which is really good!
Have stopped watching news for a long time because I got fed up with the trivial issues being aired.
At least we can screen the newspapers, on the channels, you can't choose what news you wanna hear.. damn!!

@D_S... I am scared, very scared ;)

In the recent years, there has been the advent of a lot of news channels on television. There seems to be a lot of competition amongst various news channels to get ahead in terms of TRP's so they tend to do anything and everything to attract the viewers.

The thing is, that the news they bring is more or less the same. The analysis, the various talking points and the expert opinions are available in most news channels whenever a new story breaks.

But these days, a particular news bulletin contains less of news, business and otherwise and more of entertainment related stuff. For example, whether Aishwarya is getting married to Abhishek or not and any slight development regarding that leads to breaking news. Although, I understand that times have changed, but still to declare it as breaking news is a bit too much.

And the media does go to extreme to get stories which do not in anyway affect us. Such as the recent Rahul Mahajan and his wife fiasco being talked about in every news channel. This is an example of the news channels going towards extremities to get the juicy stuff.

And about the idiotic things that the news channel cover.

First there was this 20 hour singing marathon or something in a particular news channel which claims to be the number 1 news channel in the country.

Also, about an year ago I saw this feature on a news channel, about a man who had predicted that he will die on this particular date and time. A lot of people had gathered, a lot of prayers were being given and the news channel continued to cover it with great enthusiam. And when the exact time came.... No! the man did not die, he was absolutely okay at the end of it, which was quite predictable. These things only happen may be because there is a dearth of news stories, so the news channel people just show anything however irrelevant that may be.

Very true neena.....

Well I remember some time back there was this news about a boy ames Prince who fell into a well. Media hyped this case like anything..... My point is, 10 yrs back also we had all these cases, then why hype this case now? This can be a news and can be dinhsed in 15-30 min. why have it run all day?? Why publicize it?

I guess todays news is more of quantity and less of QUALTIY!!
Today there are so many news channel, but hardly any Quality news is broadcasted!!

I guess the indian news channels must benchmark CNN , BBC etc and improve their quality of news!!

Its holiday mate and what the best thing any professional like to do in the free time in fact any other person who is too vela(slang for idleness) at home ..yeah right thats hooking into his TV set.The idiot box.hmm it would be other way round I guess for present day scenario .As per the content it seems the idiot is on other end sitting on sofa with all kind of high energy food so that he can have better expansion to fit in the couch..Then slyly we pick the remote as the ultimate weapon of star wars in our hand and we can have control of whole universe of throwing shit! Its amazing to watch the expression when you are watching the TV sagas with family and how the great feud of having control of remote control and helplessness on other member of family are..especially if the father has it and the son has to watch it!
By the way as i started this post to be centered on something else than giving the intricate details of what a TVs life is (A Bugs Life!)..
So lets give the control to father as he is the boss and there goes the favorite series of all the news channel.click..! click! click!..
Its really leaves me wondering how the news channel are managing to flourish like cocoons.and mind it (as per India) Kal tak( A news channel) is leading the bandwagon. The content now seems to be more bollywood masala oriented and does shows all the colors of India in terms of its spices finesse. One must admit with the kind of news we get at our table is really high quality entertainment source..
And leading this rat race it has shown a great supremacy by alienating itself from the basic thing media was meant to savor.its the common man feelings and Emotions
How sad it sounded when the news channel people asks the wife who nearly lost his husband in accident. How are you feeling maam now and How you felt at that time..In the pursuit of just showing something for the heck of it they become so indifferent and instead of acknowledging the fact they say showing you the the truth.
Media is now should be added as another pseudonym for hype. and they know how to built this tower of hype defying all laws.
A funny incident took place when some child who was playing with his friends fall into the well and media hyped it so much that the child was given so many scholarship and sponsorships..one of his friends father after knowing this slapped his son and said You idiot why didnt u fall..
This way the story goes on and on..I wonder how the things can change how this can change as the support who changed to this world..who created revolutions brought a different outlook has itself lost its orientation..where they are more interested in showing people kissing inhabiting there privacy to get higher TRPs rather than showing the true meaning of news.
I wonder oneday it might happen when we switch on this big bazaar and there will be a correspondant with poodle cut Shouting with utmost confidence and saying in high mysterious tone Is gali ke kutte aaj kuch jada bhok rahe hai(this streets dogs are barking more than usual) AAyie pooche Mr. Kutta ji se aap kaisa mehsoos kar rahe hai kya lagta hai aapko( Lets ask Mr Doggy how are you feeling today what You feel about this)..

This blog is no more active...but gave lot of inside scoops as how media works...a good read..and dont miss the comments

War for News

Cheers!!!

Rohit

the content is quite good..seems ther are some free lance journalists...thanx its really good read

Plus we can add more about how our petty news channels are becoming more a source of porn news..seems all the channels are out for "CITY CITY CAM CAM" thing..catching ppl with there cam what they are upto...plusssss catching other ppl cam work...eeekssssss

india electronic media doesnt know the journalism . what they consider news is 99% times useless for 90% of population for ex:
what the hell we have to do with aish-bacchan marriage?what we are getting?
what is so important in arun nayar-elizabetgh hurly knot for india?
why so much hulla balla over cricket, first they make it sensation and then they trash it, what comes out is nothing more than sheer time waste.
they dont consider our army, scientists, budding industrialists, young politicians, education, universities excellence as a matter of news at all....they are more intersted in aishwarya rai marriage, shaukh khan next movie, what happened at femina fashion show??/

we need a break from this.
stop this circus and show us some stuff........if u have watched BBC you will find that u will know much more about india in 30 min than 24 hour watching of zee, star or whatever...
i wonder how can they continue with this nonsense.

Hyped !!!
Definitely they are..
More precisely, I would say, as the others pointed out, there is a lack of quality content featuring on most Indian News Channels...

Even the slightest of incident becomes "BREAKING NEWS"(?) and keeps flashing on the screens for atleast the next 2-3 hrs till they get some new "BREAKING NEWS"(?)...which is absolutely useless for most of the viewers..

Hindi news channels have gone from bad to worse

Very True, the quality of Hindi News channels have indeed deteriorated and hit rock-bottom.. Probably thats bcoz the no of competitors in this segment is very large and they are doin everything to have those eyeballs glued to their channels...Specifically the channels like Aaj Tak which used to be quality viewing a few years back have turned absolutely sore of late.. :(

Making a mountain out of a mole hill has become their habit or rather their USP (as they would think !)

According to me, the News channels need to be more innovative & come out with informative programs catering to different age-groups & people of varied interests as well..
For Eg. NDTV has been doin a good job at this by featuring Progarams such as We the People,The Big Fight, Cell Guru, NDTV Books,Home improvement,Great Indian Tamasha, Meet the Jawaans, Some Career show(i cant recollect the name) etc. etc..

By catering to different genres of viewers & airing these programs at different times, these channels would not only have more viewers but also would ensure that the quality & the standards of the programs aired are maintained tolerable, informative & entertaining...

The English News channels have done a decent job of getting out of a "News only" channel and involving the viewers as well..Especially CNN-IBN, with its innovative concepts of Citizen Journalist, has brought
the true probs faced by citizens straight from the horse's mouth..

But of late, even these channels seem to be gettin into more of the gossiping channels mode..The coverage of the recent super-duper hyped Ash-Abhi wedding is proof enough of this fact..

Specially, What the Hindi news channels need to realize is the fact that their target audience is much much more than the English News Channels & hence its a responsibility on their part to be involved in some serious informative journalism rather than just Page 3 type of Journalism..

The most wierd aspect abt Breaking news is that each and every channel has a Breaking News 24 hrs of the day and each Breaking News is different from the other :wow: :wow: There was a time when a breaking news was some thing very unique, something which shocked you, something which made you a bit curious to watch the channel. But now, Abhishek bacchan getting down frm his horse is also breaking news.

And why to just single out the news channels? This deterioration is so visible in the newspapers. We have a Tissue paper of India which sells its editorial content, we have a Hindustan Times which launched itself on the back of Salman-Ash tapes. For one of these papers Raveena Tandon's dog being kidnapped was a headline news. Dunno why? Maybe the dog being kidnapped had serious economic consequences for India

Few years back Aajtak was just a 20 mins news, which was amazingly anchored by Surendra Pratap Singh. I actually enjoyed watching the news in those days. His untimely death chnaged everything. When it became a 24 hr news channel I had such great expectations from it. Suddenly TRPs became more important than actual news.

Now I have stopped watching news of any kind and I just hate them as much I hate himesh and ekta kapoor

Yeah the death of Surendra Pratap singh started the downfall n contentof quality...its pathetic state is now headed by Tv today group our own India today fellas..U can infact see eve the editor Prabhu chwala how adds masala while interviewing ppl with his obnoxious comments...
I guess it all started with AAj tak leaqding The TRPs n then followed by other news channels as they were lagging behind the rat race..now Zee and 24*7 n other kinda news channels has spoilt the broth...infact to gain TRPs they r airing unedited version of sex scandals to gain viwership..

Our gr8 broadcasting ministry doesn't have problem with this...perhaps they r more intersted in downsizing of mallika sherawat skirts then this...
anways ministry also cant help much as even if somehow(which is highly unlikely like flick of light) some person soul wakes up n take any action all media group will soon broadcast as breaking news of curbing media power n say how the govt is corrupt n hostile against truth...:argue:

(Someone come up with a better pseudonym for Mumbai Mirror please. Have been using Mumbia Mara, but that's quite sad.)

well, maybe u can try Mumbai Mess

i just hope tht now they dnt go on covering the honeymoon of the so called bollywood hottese couple...
