Sabsey important ->Ask the guards where exactly is the IME department which is the venue for the GD/PI round.
I talked to some people and they all had problems in finding the place(I had already done my Summer Training in IIT kanpur so i didn't have much of a problem).

Now coming to the GD/PI process , I was in the 9:00 am slot.Ensure that you reach the place atleast by 8:30 am , because the presentation had already started when i reached at 8:45 or so.

Seniors gave the presentation and they clarified all the doubts and queries that the aspirants had.We were also shown a video , showcasing a day in the life of an MBA student in IITK.

I must say seniors "Marketed" the "IIT Kanpur MBA" very well(well these were the words used by a senior).

Straight after that I was called for my GD(I being in the first batch).:
The GD was a case study.
It was an article by Joseph Stiglitz. It talked about the Banking sector and the shortsightedness of the bankers that caused the economic crisis.
In the end the question posed was whether "Managerial Incentives should be based on relative performance or stock prices".
We were given 5 minutes to read the case study and 2 minutes each for the monologue in random order. Then there was an open house for 6 minutes which was quite less.
That's it.That concluded the GD process.

Then we went for the document verification.
FREE KI ADVICE--> Carry 2 sets of photocopies of all the required documents,as well as the originals.

Now came the PI.
I was in group 1 Panel 2.
The panel consisted of four professors-P1(The Logical Prof),P2(The technical Prof),P3(The Serious Prof) AND P4(He kept moving in and out of the room).

P3- So You are a fresher.
M-Yes Sir.
P3-From which field?
M-Computer Science.
P3-So which is you favorite subject?
M-Computer Networks ka gyan.
P3-(Seemed Impressed)Asked about my project.
M-Told.
P2,P3-(Impressed).
P3-Explain IP addresses.
M-Done.
P3-Significance of different bits in IP address.
M-
P2-Some questions about a subject i studied in 4th Sem.
M-Some Gyan(Told All that I could remember)
P4-(Comes in)So Danish,Tell me some parameters using which i can gauge whether you are polished or not:shock:(Galti se keh diya tha ki MBA Apni Skills ko polish karne ke liye karna chata hun).
M-Bahut Saara Gyan.
P4-Quantify these parameters or how will you quantify whether you are polished or not.
M-Infinite Gyan about skill sets, Parameters and the like.
P1-(Finally Questions)-So would you prefer a guy who has a technical expertise or has better Communication Skills.
M-The latter and the reasons to support.
P4-Where Did you buy this Lousy Tie and for how much?
M-Sir Kohli Brothers for 995 Rs.
P4-It is a waste of money (and some more comments):w00t:
M-
We all shared a good laugh.:p

Panel-ThankYou
M-ThankYou Sir.

I was in the first batch , so was done with the GD/PI a little early. The process started at 9:15 am and i was free by 12:15pm.

Seniors were very helpful, they even asked if anybody had an afternoon train to catch so that they can slot these people's GD/PI a little early.

Hope this gives you an idea.

Best of Luck:cheerio:

Hehehe....

Dont worry... they might be trying to stress you out... :-)

Apart from all this, in our interactions with the panelists after the process, they are highly impressed with the quality of the aspirants this year !! (Regardless of whether they show it or not )

Kudos to all of you...

Looking forward to more experiences and constructive feedback.

Hi,

I had my GD/PI on 19th morning slot.

No doubt IIT-Kanpur has very good campus. I was impressed. BUT......
If I talk about IME department. Not much impressive.

I was there at 8 am as told. Around 8:30 we started off with IME(ppt) followed by query session. PPT not much impressive. I had been to SIBM, SCMHRD, IIT-B so compared with them.

I had my PI first and I was second one to go.

Asked general questions on my work profile, grilled me on Database which I could not answer, why MBA, why IIT-Kanpur (told them good ROI & Opportunity Cost).
Overall it was ok-ok......as i could not ans. technical questions but i did give justification for that as I have not been in touch with my acads for past 2 years & etc....

Then was GD.
Case study.....
First each one of us was given 2 mins to speak.
I made full use of that as they asked me to stop after 2 mins.
Then 6 mins open for discussion. 12 members in a group so fish market was expected.

Agreed. But we would be moving to a brand new building soon !!!

I hope we told you about it when u came here.

Best of luck !

Thought I should share my experience too...may help other aspirants in future..coz i'm sure am not getting through!!

Had afternoon slot on 19th...reached the campus by 11:45..and took a room.
A bus came to pick us from hostels at 12:45 pm. ( Thanx to seniors for this ! )

GD: Case study on Kalam's View on India 2020 where he had told about five sectors to concentrate upon. In the end the question was something like " Do you agree with Mr. Kalamor do you think its based on some lofty ideas concentrating on commercialisation ?"

PI: 2 persons in panel..P1 and P2

P1: Read my profile and then asked how many ppl worked under me
Me: blah Blah...
P1: So were you like a friend or a person with the Chabuk treating them like
slaves ?
Me: Friend..and then some gyan on team work..
P1: Mech Engg?? How do u design a bolt ?
Me: No idea
P1: How do u design a shaft ?
Me: blabbered something which he said was way off the topic
P1: U want to answer it again ?
Me: Sir. i told u what i know
.... Some more questions where i could only say..."dunno","don't remem"...
P2 : Going through my semester marksheets ( me thinking ab to phans gaye )
P2 : Explain Operations Research to me ..what did u learn ?
Me: It was two yrs back..hardly remem something..
P2: Tell me whatever u know
Me : started explaining what i could remember...
P2 : ( smiling which was more like smirking)..explain Linear Programming
Me : ( Finally kuch to aata hai)..gyan..

P1: now u can go.
Me: Thank you

All in all intview lasted hardly for 5 minutes with me answering hardly 2 of 10-12 quesn asked. Proper formal rape. 😲

Hi Puys,

I had my GD/PI on 19 March afternoon slot.
Here is my experience...

On my way to Kanpur from Delhi I met two friends Neha and Chetana in train who were also going to Kanpur for their GD.

:cheerio: Neha & Chetana you guys were really very good and supportive for the whole 2 days. Thank You For Your Support.

Now the selection process...........

First there was a presentation about MBA@IIT-Kanpur. After then we were taken to a room where they formed different groups. I was in last person first group.

Now comes most CONFUSED PART of the selection process..

Document Verification..
We were asked to 2 photocopies of the various certificates and they asked for lot of docs..Most of the people who were present there were not having all the documents and we were asked to fill an undertaking accordingly...

After that we were asked to go for our respective interviews....

I gave interview to panel number 2. There were 3 guys.
P1- Middle Aged Man.
P2- Very Senior Man ( He did most of the talking ).
P3- Senior Man ( During the process the pretended sleep and went out in between)

I entered the room and they asked me to sit.....I forgot to greet them.:banghead:

P2 was going through the form very carefully.

P2 : So you are embedded software developer. Explain embedded software
Me :Explained.
P1 : How it is different from normal software...
Me : Told.
P2 : What is blue-tooth??? ( As this was used my project )
Me : I am sorry sir I have not worked on blue-tooth protocol..
P2 : Ok. So its a protocol..
Me : Yes Sir.
P2 : How code runs on the processor..
Me : Told..
P2 : Where does complier resides??
Me : Told...
P2 : Ok tell me what is Core 2 Duo processor...
Me : (Clean Bowled) I am not sure sir but there are two processor....
P2 : (Interrupting) then what is dual core????
Me : :shock::shock: Gone....I am sorry sir...
P1 & P2 : Thank you.....
Me : Thank You Sir......

I really dont know what to make out of this interview...It was very short lived.. Only 5-7 minutes.. ...Really Dont Know What Happened??

Then within 5 mins we were taken to GD room..There were total 12 people..They gave us numbers.. My number was 8...There was a case study on "Has Globalization Reached Its Peak"

We were asked to sit in-front of our respective numbers....
There were 3 sheets lying on the table...
1. Blank Paper
2. Instruction Sheet...
3. Case Study...

We were given 5 minutes to read the case study and 2 minutes each for the monologue in random order. I was luckily second one asked to speak. Then there was an open house for 6 minutes.

I think I did pretty ok in monologue...Finished before 2 minutes...I was also one of the major speaker during GD..Only 6-7 people spoke.Luckily No Fish Market:cheerio:

This was experience at IIT Kanpur..

Guys any take on my GD/PI...

I am also seeing many complains about the process at IIT Kanpur on PG. But problem ADCOM had is there are only 43 people in current batch.. So that makes little difficult for these guys to manage...But what is the positive point from this is that this year they are going to release 2 wait lists...

Only one thing that I want seniors to note.

Some girls told me that there was no-one present where girls accommodation was provided and no nearby food facilities for them in nearby premises.

Apart from that I am happy about process.

Thanks Senior For Your Support...
Once again Neha & Chetana Thank You For Your Support

Regards,
Harshad

Hoping for the best :cheerio:

hello everyone,
had my gd n pi on 19th afternoon slot.....
hey harshad:cheerio: it was great meeting ya.... u proved to be a nice company thank you
as harshad has already conveyed abt the process, i think i ll straight away move towards ma gd n pi experience
for me it was gd first n we 12 of us were called for a case study which was based on vision of APJ Abdul Kalam as in his vision of india improving in five sectors like agri and food processing, IT,electricity, etc.
so in all quite a doable case
After this gd we were guided towards a room where our documents were verified n seniors were quite helpful, thank u all :cheerio:
N here comes real fun ma pi....
i think profs out there r really confused with interview of M tech n MBA
they started reading ma percentage in 10th, 12th n then engineering
n then fired with various technical questions as in m from civil engineering...
so questions were like design earthquake resistant building n all
then few maths questions
then again technical n lots of grins from the panel
Summing up my interview was more than pathetic....
no hr questions :(
n the torture ended in 5 min, thankfully
all the best to everyone else :cheerio:

Reached IIT Kanpur on 20th night..they provided hostel..
one caution: Mosquitoes may be ur worst enemies there..They almost swallowed me and they have made my face almost like a clear night sky glowing with stars!!

Campus:
Beautiful. And Kanpur has only one good thing. IIT Kanpur.

About process:
After presentation, we were divided into 4 groups. Our group(3) had GD first.

GD:
It was a case study. An article on why Indian companies are doing better than their US counterparts even in recession. The article gave an impression that it's due to corporate social responsibility as they take into account all stake holders and not only share holders.

Reading time=5 min.

Monologue=2min. (I utilized this opportunity to speak for complete 2 min., In fact the moderator had to stop me for overrunning time.)

Group discussion=5 min. (Spoke for 3 times)

My take on GD:- Our group could be termed as an ideal group where everybody spoke his/her points and all others were more than willing to listen to him/herThere was no fish market at all.. Consider this, in GD, I spoke for almost 2 minutes and no one interrupted me!! Very nice group.:cheerio:

PI:
They say that normalization occurs everywhere. I realized it in my PI.
If GD went nice, PI went equally horrible

Two profsP1(Chem. Engg.) and P2(Most probably, Mech. Engg....)

P2-So, you have done B.E. in Polymer and Chemical tech from D.C.Ehmm
Me-Yes sir..
Meanwhile, P1-Flipping thru my engg. Marksheets..
P2-And you are working as software developer in XXXX?
Me-Yes sir (I thought I wud be required to introduce myself.. Rather they knew my bio data more than anyone else..!)
P1-ok, what are conducting polymers?
Me-Sir, Polymers that are good conductors of electricity..
P1-That I know..I mean why are they good conductors?
Me-(Couldn't recall early but after a few seconds) Sir, though I don't remember it but from some logic, I can say that electricity is flow of electrons..hence there must be some extra valence electrons in them which are free.
P1-(Interrupted)Ohfoo..U not gettingok tell me which is the strongest bond out of single, double, triple?
Me-Triple.
P1-How many sigma and pi bonds are there in triple bond?
Me-1 sigma and 2 pi
P1-(Laughing) What1 sigma 2 pi??
Me-Yes sirdefinitely..
P2-(takes over)There is a subject called industrial management in your B.E.
Me-(Is that so??) Yes sir, I saidgaining my breath..
P2-Draw demand-supply curve.
Me-Sir, I can't really recall at this point of time but I can give it a tryAs demand increases, supply also increases but only to a certain extentafter that when supply reaches its peak, it becomes almost constant..etc
P2-(Not convinced..) Gave some gyan
Me-(Maine kya gunah kiya hai??):drinking:
P1-(takes over)What is an oligopoly?
Me-Sir, oligomers are those polymers which..
P1-(Interrupted) Not oligomers..I am asking Oligopoly..
Me-Don't know sir.
P1-Why, U weren't told about it in B.E.?
Me-Sir, It would be unfair of me if I blame them as I am not sure..may be I couldn't recall at this point.
P2-(takes over) ok, draw algorithm for sorting an array
Me-(At last, some respite) Though, I did a mistake of the conditional expression, but rest was fine.
P1 and P2-Thank you.
Me-Thank you, sir(as happily as I could).

So, this was it..Almost disasterous PI but it gave me an important lesson that half knowledge is dangerous. Either you know something completely or you don't. There is no place for gray lines here.

Anyway, all the best to others!!

Special thanks to 2011 batch for smoothly conducting the process and dissolving our apprehensions at every point of time.

hey puys i had my gd/pi on 20th..
gd : was about a case study on henry ford..went fine the monologue as well as the open house..surprisingly wasn't a fish market at all..
pi : 3 panelists
was a technical interview but my take is that they are really not looking at how much u know but how u handle the questions(atleast I'm hoping that it is that way)
some questions that i can recall :
1.how u design a shaft?
2.what about shear stress?
3.what is producer/consumer's risk?
4.what is Operation research?
5. something about linear prog?
6.mean/mode etc
could answer a few, gave some globe on a few more,n surrendered a few!

Whew !!

The admissions process is finally over !

Regarding your concerns:

1) The VH ext accomodation for girls - We agree it was not to our liking too - too far from the rest of the halls, and a little isolated. However, this is the end of ur troubles . When you join, spacious single rooms would be provided to all MBA students...

2) Mosquitoes - Ooops... we sincerely forgot about our little friends completely. Next time, we will make sure they dont get too friendly ...

As far as the process goes, it went on pretty smoothly, and the entire admissions team had a lot of fun interacting with all of you !
It felt really good to have some people specifically come searching for me (much to the chagrin of the other admission coordinators )

Do keep grilling me on all aspects of the program here at IIT Kanpur, and I will continue to provide you with an honest perspective.

A very sincere thank you to all the candidates for participating in the admissions process. I wish you all the very best for your careers !

Thank you neha.
Well, thats the way things have been in all the interviews.
But correcting you it was still an interview and not a viva-voce.
Most of the questions were not meant to be answered, and again for the rest; more than the answer, the way you are able to handle something unexpected was judged and part of your evaluation.
To make things clear (and brag abt my insti as well )faculty over here is one of the very best brains of the country and are fully aware of the programme they are inducting students to.

All the best to you as well.

Harshad,
This is the only disadvantage of having a small batch when it comes to volunteers and organizing something that is scheduled for 4 days and involves a 24 hour control desk . I hope you understand the fatigue involved after so much running, cycling, shouting, counseling, file-work and at the last the account balancing with respective hostels. :banghead:

Addressing to the female candidates : We faced a serious shortage of rooms this year as many hostel rooms are booked in advance for the many of the events scheduled in this Golden Jubilee year of IITK and believe me it was the best accommodation possible for the female candidates.
I had personally vouched for a better located Girls Hostel while making arrangements, but all guest rooms were booked well in advance.
For IME deptt. as venue:
Please bear with us this year, we have a new building coming up that includes state of art audi, tele/video confrencing hall, lavish offices, and of-course corporate like interview rums.

I assure you all it will be a pleasure to be a part of MBA@IITK.

thanks a lot to seniors for making it pretty smooth...

here goes my experience..i had it on 22nd 2pm slot

GD- a case study regarding compensation of us CEOs and CEOs frm withing the company performing better..and will Asian CEOs will bring down the astronomical salaries of US CEOs...well..i frankly speaking i wasn't able to understand it firsthand...but anyways add few points..fumbled a bit..also entered gd -3 times...but....i woun't say it was a very good GD.. :-(:-(

PI-..
had my tryst with panel 1...
3 panel members....
P1: a prof of analytics..
P2: a lady prof of IT& systems..
P3: a prof (dont remember his area)
when i entered the room...p1 was reading my profile...you are XXXX jmet rank 579..done B.E...from XXXX college with 72.54 %..i corrected him ..sir i did B.Tech...he did not bothered and continued.....and college is affiliated to U.P.T.U...then p3 said ...is jhansi in U.P..P2 said that she used to think it was in M.P....then i said ma'am Jhansi is very much in U.P...and also my college was U.P. State Govt funded...
P2: who is vc of your university..
me: ma'am i don't know who is current vc but it was Mr. D.S.Chauhan when i passed out.
P2:when you passed out?
me:2007..(actually..uptu current vc is ex deputy director of IITK )
P2 continued ..u work in XXXX for last 30 months..
P3: u hv 30 months of work-ex..but u look so young.. :p
me: sir, i am not that young..i'm into 26th yr.
P1 continued...u hv done B.E in CS....
and then he pointed out to P2...ma'am he has done in CS....
P2: So..wht u do in csc..
me: XXXXX .
P2: which subject of btech u use in ur work..?
me: ma'am not very much..the work is all tool based...
P2: ok ..so u remember any btech subject..??tell me whts ur fav sub?
me: ma'am...ds,c,c++..
P2: and..?
me: ds,c ,C++ (she want me to remember all sub or wht..??...after 3 yrs of passing out)
P2:wht is binary search tree???
me:told binary tree..
P2:tell me binary search tree..
ms:same..
P2: wht is AVL tree??

P2: tell me some practical implementation of stack..
me: think a bit...sorry ma'am ..i can't recall nw..
P2: hv u studied sorting?
me: yes ma'am..
P2: wht is complexity of quick sort...?
me: (opps..kya kya poochhoge) ..ma'am its O(n2)..
P2: is it best case complexity..?
me: ma'am ..i can recall this only...(best case is n*logn )..
p2: ok..u may leave..
..so the story ends...

after all wrong and/not ans in technical questions ...my chances of making it r ZERO.. :-(:-(:-(:-(

well....will be back with bang in IITM process...:cheerio:

@fail- what was ur number dude? I agree that our GD was not that gud.. but the time given was also too less for open discussion.. I was No.8.. the unfortunate guy who was asked for the monologue first up!!

Well me also in 22nd march, 2:00 PM Slot..
before I start writing my PI experience, let me take u guys back to the great epic Mahabharata..
There was this character, "Shikhandi", who whenever comes in front of "Bhisma", bhisma will loose all his power..
With time I have developed similar aversion from Sardars.. NOM..
But somehow I dont find them too friendly.. and guess what, just before my PI was to start, one Sardar ji walked into panel 3 room.. Rest was a history!!

Three people in panel.. I will introduce them as hunter (Sardarji), Victim (Me) and rest two (Audience of the hunting!!)

hunter: What was ur engg branch?
Victim: Mechanical
hunter: Why is the AC making noise?
Victim: this is coming from Compressor.
hunter: Draw a compressor and tell me how it works?
Victim: (Drew something which was similar to IC engine cylinder!!)
Hunter: Are u sure this compressor is used here?
Victim: :shock:Well, Sir, there is this rotary compressor also..
Hunter: Forget it, I am really liking your compressor, tell me how it works..
Victim: Told..
Hunter: Can u convert it in a IC Engine?
Victime: no sir, a lot of modifications will be required.. Told what all, he was never convinced..
hunter: What was your rank in class..
Victim: Told
Hunter: Is it? Lagta to nahi hai .. Some more question on compressor..
Victim: Sir, I am not able to recall exactly, have been working for 2 and half years..
Hunter: Ok.. U work, where? what do u do?
Victim: (Abhi samajh me aaya aapko!! Kyon beijjat kar rahe hai!!!)
Sir, ****, Doing QA work..
Audience 1: What is TQM? derive 6 sigma from Normal Distribution curve..
Victim: Started telling what TQM and 6 sigma is..
Hunter: No no..derive it from Normal distribution curve..

Well thats my story. I m confident about my IIT K results now.. best of luck to everybdy else.. Its sad, specially after the motivating presentation made by Tejas Sir..I really liked it, just the fact that it went on for 90 mins (longest one I have ever attended!!).. but thats bearable given the kind of enthu aur seniors have!!!:cheerio:
Thanks to Arjit,Salil, Sidharth,Akhil and Dheeraj Sir!!..
Thanks Shely mam for telling me before hand that the panel will ask normal distribution curve, just that it was a bit late!!
