IIMB has placed all its students by day 2(which means that a lot of big companies like Wipro,Infosys,Bharti and TCS cud not get anyone!!)
Was waiting for the placements stats to be released before posting but since they aren't i hav attached a coolavenues report at the end of my post...
A Hindu article reports the median salary to be 8.75L but frankly it could be even higher with the finance companies offering astronomical salaries(because of huge variable bonus components) and marketing ones hiking the salary by 1-1.5L
For old timers at pagalguy: I got placed with ITC and Deepak Singla got placed with DB London
Well something which placement reports normally dont cover is the amazing amount of choice available to students...this year people took the jobs they really wanted...Just look at my example...had a PPO from Britannia, offfers from StanC and DB India (to setup their first retail operations outside europe as some placement reports put it) . Took up ITC since I was a marketing major. This was one big positive this year at the placements - choice.
This year was huge for day0 placements....since the figures are not out...lemme just suffice by sayin that it was the biggest ever at IIMB
Well keep watching this space for more details as they come up

IIMB Students Set to Rule the World: Final Placements'05 Report
IIMB lived up to its reputation of finishing placements in record time - this time the whole batch was placed by Day 2 of placements. In all, 78 companies made 328 offers, out of which 197 were accepted. The number of foreign offers was 53 - which is approximately 30% of the batch. In addition to this many Indian companies offered jobs at international locations. Day 0 consulting firms including McKinsey, BCG and AT Kearney made 10 offers at locations within the country. Some of these students were also offered an option of an overseas posting. Said Gauri Gupta of the Boston Consulting Group, "The batch this year was very good. Specifically, they were very strong on analytics and showed a high level of maturity."
After a bumper Day 0 at the summer recruitments a few months ago, with participation from companies such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Barclays Capital and Lehman Brothers (New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong), a major increase in participation by foreign recruiters for the final placements was always on the cards.
As many as 16 companies participated in Day 0, including Arthur D. Little, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Dresdner KW, General Motors Asia Pacific, McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, AT Kearney, Deutsche Bank, Temasek Holdings, BP Singapore and Capital One. They offered positions in various foreign locations, including New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Some students, despite being offered foreign placements, preferred to join the Indian operations of the companies. Students also took up jobs in the social sector. This year also saw entrepreneurial initiatives with students like Abhishek Thakore opting to start off with their own ventures in spite of the lucrative salaries offered on campus.
Said Prof. Y. L. R. Moorthi, Placement Chairperson and professor of marketing at IIMB, "IIM Bangalore has shown a record increase of over 275% in the number of Day 0 companies recruiting from the campus. With several Investment Banks choosing to make their largest number of offers at IIMB, the institute has clearly emerged as the preferred talent source for investment banks across the globe." Andrew who is the Head of Foreign Exchange, HSBC London said, "I had very high expectations when I came here, but I was still pleasantly surprised. The quality here is excellent. The students here at IIMB are absolutely outstanding."
Another record of sorts was created when IIMB saw 100 acceptances on Day 1 which is the highest ever by any IIM. Medha from the global recruitment team of American Express said, "IIMB is our favourite campus." She was also full of praise for the students and the placement process at IIMB. Among the Indian recruiters, Cognizant kept up its long-standing relationship with IIMB and made 33 offers, the highest number of offers made by any firm across campuses. Day 1 also saw the usual slew of banks like Citibank, Standard Chartered, ICICI, Kotak Investment bank and DSP Merrill Lynch. Top marketing companies like P & G and HLL also recruited from campus. In addition, Indian consulting companies like Accenture, KPMG and E & Y also came to campus.
Among foreign recruiters, BNP Paribas, one of the largest multinational banks, made its highest number of offers at IIMB, offering positions at Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Tokyo. Speaking about the students at IIMB, Angelo Pinto from BNP Paribas said, "Besides the sound academics the students possess, we have also seen in them the right mix of quantitative skills, quick responsiveness and understanding of global markets. These abilities are vital for the roles in Trading, Derivatives and FI sales, into which we have hired them."
Said Gauri Gupta of the Boston Consulting Group, "The batch this year was very good. Specifically, they were very strong on analytics and showed a high level of maturity."
Hi kunal,
Congrats to begin with.
Could you elaborate on the quoted statement?
What exactly does she mean by 'analytics'? Is it a reference to one's problem-solving skills or more specifically quantitative skills?
If so, how are these skills gauged in the interviews?
Are the interviews domain-specific?
For instance ,what is an I-bank looking for?Your knowledge of the domain?Or
the sheer ability to crunch numbers?
And I guess the students are shortlisted on the basis of their CV. That being the case, what are they looking for in a CV? How much does the brand of the
undergraduate institute matter?
Moreover, Was the lack of work-experience of the current batch not a hampering factor at all this year?
Some of the queries are naive. Yet I thought the answers would help aspirants.

I have my IIMB interview tomorrow! Take me in pleeeeeeeeese!:)
Congrats for the fab placements. Shrikanth has asked some good questions? Could you answer them? Also the profiles of the students who got the top paying- jobs(toppers or not, high on extra currics or not, undergrad insti, work ex) would help all of us a lot. If you look at one of the placement reports then all that seems to be different is the name of the insti & everything else is same. For the aspirant junta some more knowledge of the process will be immensely beneficial. Thanx.
Hi guys,
I hav tried to answer some of ur queries, please lemme know if u want me to elaborate on anything.
Most of u wanted to know about day0 placements, well i had not applied to any day0 since there are no marketing companies on day0 so i'll try n answer these questions to the best of my abilities...
Could you elaborate on the quoted statement?
What exactly does she mean by 'analytics'? Is it a reference to one's problem-solving skills or more specifically quantitative skills?
I think since BCG is a consulting firm she is referring to problem solving skills like approach to solving a case n stuff. Very few day zero firms assess math skills - CapOne is one of those which does.
If so, how are these skills gauged in the interviews?
By giving u a case for solving, by giving u puzzles n stuff
Are the interviews domain-specific?
For instance ,what is an I-bank looking for?Your knowledge of the domain?Or
the sheer ability to crunch numbers?
An I-bank tests u for both, but yeah having indepth knmowledge of a particular domain in which u seek to work is highly advantageous. Good basics in finance are a must for i-banks
And I guess the students are shortlisted on the basis of their CV. That being the case, what are they looking for in a CV? How much does the brand of the
undergraduate institute matter?
Your past background matters A LOT. infact some of my friends who were university toppers in lesser known univs dint gat any calls(during summers), in finals ur grades in IIMB matter a lot (except perhaps for DB which shortlists a diverse profile). Consisitent acad performance is a MUST. If ure from IIT, Bits, Stephens, Xaviers, etc or have a C.A. degree and have great acads(great bcoz everyone has good acads here) then u hav a good chance
Also if your CV has something which stands out of a crowd of 190 students(or 240 from this year) then you have a chance - things like starting your own company, relevant work-ex(in a crowd of ppl with IT workex), have written books n stuff or anything which is not the usual stuff like - coordinator of some event n the like.
Moreover, Was the lack of work-experience of the current batch not a hampering factor at all this year?
It was an advantage, ppl w/o work-ex meant that very few had been placed through laterals, so the pressure was on everyone and they mugged like crazy for the placements which had not been the case last year when 100 outta 190 had been placed in laterals.
Well for the top payin-jobs(i think u mean day0) being a topper will get u a shortlist but u also need sound knowledge to answer the interviews and a good personality to shine over others. Most companies shortlist the top 25-30 students and sprinkle the list with some ppl with exceptional CVs which could mean work-ex, extra-currics and past acads. Some companies go for exceptional CVs overall and have a set cutoff for CGPA(ur grades at IIMB) so they selct the best CVs from a list of ppl whose CG is say above 3.3.

Thanks kunal,for your detailed reply.
Btw, what kind of systems jobs are on offer for freshers or guys with Are the consulting jobs at BCG ,Mck et al related to IT/systems?Or do they prefer students with a general-management profile?
For old timers at pagalguy: I got placed with ITC and Deepak Singla got placed with DB London
Congrats Kunal and Deepak.... All da very best :)
Cheers
and Srikanth,
regarding your query about systems jobs on offer
This year i think the most coveted systems jobs were Microsoft which was paying very very handsomely...and also CTS since they give a good path (leading to account manager with possible abroad posting) and a good package for freshers. If your experience was highly relevant then possibly u cud hav leveraged it with Yahoo which was payin good money. Apart from this jobs on offer are mostly IBM,Intel and HP (since this year IIMB did not see day2) which offer project mgmt, S & M, operations, finance, etc but for systems guys the preference list was mostly in the order i have mentioned in this paragraph. A lot of options are available to workex guys as a lot of companies come thru laterals and offer good packages....but for nil work-ex i think CTS is the best since Microsoft required some wk-ex.
I think BCG, McK look for a general management profile and work-ex is not soo important here since they do not hire for systems consultancy.:whatthat:
Consisitent acad performance is a MUST. If ure from IIT, Bits, Stephens, Xaviers, etc or have a C.A. degree and have great acads(great bcoz everyone has good acads here) then u hav a good chance
Any chance that my UG %age might come to haunt me.. once again??
(Did so at the IIMC interview big-time)
although i dont have a call from IIMB
but i think the processes should be similar at both IIMB and IIMC
.
yes im afraid so...
it happened to me atleast...i had 65% in engg and that has been a sore point and will be my disadvantage forever...
Everytime i have to think of answers to why i did not get good grades in engg. but HSC and SSC grades matter less...in fact if your CV has a lot of good points u can even avoid mentioning them.
The general perception is that if u have bad grades u shud have been heavily into some extracurricular activities....but in case u do not have any of the two...urre in trouble
but worry not...after an MBA from IIMB all such things will go away and ur IIM brand and work-ex will decide ur destiny(besides ur personality ofcourse)
TC.
Hey Kunal,
Congrats for the placements !!!! I knew about your PPO from Britannia so was presuming you wouldn't be trying out much.
Again for those who came in late, Kunal was pretty much a part of the CAT 2002 prep bandwagon. Almost every insti's mock cat AIR list had a few names in common like Lyndon Perriera and ofcourse Kunal Rana. He was a super stud in DI and was always ready to volunteer for info.
Great to know you guys going places !!!
Arun
Hey Kunal,
Congrats to u and all others outhere.. IIM B rocks !
Could u please answer few more queries like :
1) Wats the lowest figure .. it wud be intersting to knw tht . .
2) profile/ performance at IIM of the people with extreme jobs.
3) wat role do our grades at IIM(as comapred to our past record/personality etc) play for givng us that dream job...
Thanks to u for such an amazing analysis ,, ,we can only get such picture on PG.
Kudos to all of u ...
Anshul
wow...thanx arun for the praise
:D
and now for CA4IIMA's queries...
Could u please answer few more queries like :
1) Wats the lowest figure .. it wud be intersting to knw tht . .
well since it is not out officially my official answer is no comments....but mebbe it could be something like 6L....coz all the companies below that were on day3 which did not happen...(clarification: this is just my opinion)
2) profile/ performance at IIM of the people with extreme jobs.
plz define "extreme jobs" ???
3) wat role do our grades at IIM(as comapred to our past record/personality etc) play for givng us that dream job...
Grades: MAtter a lot...more so with day0 companies who use this as a shortlisting parameter...after day0 good grades will get u shortlisted for some really good day1 companies like Accenture n DSPML.....for marketing grades do not matter...for some good systems and general mgmt companies, they might have a CGPA cutoff. But yeah,...grades can only get u a shortlist...they do not guarantee an offer.
Past Record in Acads: Matters only for day0 and good finance companies
Extracurrics: Matter if u wanna portray a different personality to day0 companies who get resumes full of mostly nerdy stuff....and are very very important for mkting companies
Personality: This is what gets u a job!!!!...after shortlisting everyone is on even ground....but if u r smart u will get the job....a lot of ppl with really good grades do not get the best jobs bcoz mebbe they do not look/dress smart or have problems with fluency in speech...Personality matters a lot...it will definitely get u the job if ur CV gets u thru
Sex: Sad but true...a lot of companies want to maintain "gender diversity"...so if u r a girl getting shortlists is slightly easy, and if u are good-looking and smart no one can stop u...(basic functional knowledge is required though...without that no chance - the girly factor is just a small edge over others)
dear kunal
