Hello everyone.

This thread is to provide updates on the latest happenings at IIM Indore (or Planet-I, as it is commonly known among the participants) and to solve any queries you might have regarding the institute. This thread is in addition to the I-Mentor programme that we undertake after the results of CAT and shortlist by IIM-I are announced.

Basic Information:
Established in 1996, Indian Institute of Management Indore is the sixth in the prestigious IIM family of management schools. The institute was chosen to be set up in Indore to give an impetus to management education in central India and has ever since been acting as the pioneer in the field of management, interfacing with the industry, government sectors and PSUs.

The essence of management, IIM I believes, lies in managing one's own ambitions and forging ahead consciously. "A strong theoretical foundation is the basis of good corporate practice" this, coupled with a grounding in management as it is practiced, is the underlying theme of the flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP). Spanning two years the programme is benchmarked against similar programmes of the best business schools in the world. Experiential learning, IT orientation, and social sensitivity are some of the unique features of the programme.

Situated atop a scenic hillock, the beautiful 193 acre campus provides an ideal backdrop for some of the brightest minds in the country to work their best to become the best they can be. To back this up, IIM Indore has a solid infrastructure ranging from a very beautiful campus and hostels to a strong IT backbone and the latest in teaching aids. The geographical proximity to the fastest growing industrial belt in India and the presence of Special Economic Zones around Indore provide the right environment for both giving hands-on experience to the students and in enabling the industry to make use of the wealth of management expertise available in the institute.

What was the last year IIM-I cut-off for SC, for shortlisting in GD/PI ??

"The PGP1 (first-year) students of IIM Indore had a once-in-lifetime opportunity to experience, live and learn about the finer aspects of life in the rural areas of Madhya Pradesh as part of their Rural Immersion Programme. This unique initiative has been instituted with the aim to sensitize the budding managers and entrepreneurs of this premier institute towards the various schemes undertaken by the government in villages and to study and analyze their execution and effectiveness. Spread over a week, across 44 districts, the programme proved to be an eyeopener by throwing light on various dimensions of district level administration while also dispelling several stereotypes associated with villages."
A few pointers about shortlisting and admissions to IIM Indore:

The total number of seats for the PGP 2013-15 batch is 451. The number of candidates that will be shortlisted is 4,510.

The tentative section-wise cut-off for IIM Indore is 85 percentile and the overall percentile is 90. The cut-offs are tentative and IIM Indore can modify at the time of short listing.

Why IIM Indore went up to set another campus in Mumbai ?
Why is it a branch of IIM Indore and not called IIM -Mumbai , what is basic difference in the course-curriculum between the two institutes.

@Dwaipayan2020 It's not called IIM Mumbai because the governing body is still IIM Indore. It is another campus of IIM Indore which is in Mumbai, and is not autonomous.

There is no difference in the curriculum as of now, though in the future, the Mumbai campus may diversify.

Given there are no differences between the two campus in terms of course curriculum what are the factors do you think should motivate one to take admission in the Indore campus
leaving the industrial capital of Mumbai
and vice-verse what are the factors that one should keep in my mind to opt for the Mumbai Campus leaving the parent institute of Indore besides faculty , infrastructure and ofcourse Campus Life.

The factors that favour the parent campus are:

1. Campus life - IIM Indore has the largest campus among all IIMs, and is built over 200 acres, situated atop a hill. The campus in itself has all facilities, and shuttle service is available to the city of Indore everyday at regular intervals. The Mumbai campus does not have a residential programme, which takes away a lot from what the parent campus offers.

2. Faculty - Most faculty who teach at the Mumbai campus reside in the parent campus and visit Mumbai to conduct lectures. It goes without saying that the number of profs is significantly higher in the parent campus.

3. Placements - There is no clear indication as to how the placements of those in Mumbai campus are going to take place yet.

4. Peers - Every participant of IIM Indore is screened through CAT and WAT/PI, and have relatively higher CAT score/ academics/ quality of work experience than those in Mumbai campus (since it is a new programme and admissions happen at a later stage). Hence, there is a difference in the profiles of participants from the parent campus and those in Mumbai.

Of course, if you score less in CAT and do not receive an IIM-I shortlist, you can try for the Mumbai campus whose shortlists happen at a later stage. The diploma received at the end of two years' course is the same as that of the parent campus.
@Germinator Thanks a lot for resolving my queries , wish I can also be a part of this awesome B-School. However I would like to continue the discussions as I am really interested about it.
The perception of IIM Indore in the student's community is although it always comes under the top10 B-Schools in India including ISB but many regard IIM-K as a better option.
Contrary to this the business magazines have consistently ranked IIM-I at a higher position.
Could you please clarify on this , I mean what you perceived as a student and how the perception has changed after joining IIM-I and what you have come to know after interacting with your peers in other B-Schools ?
Does these comparisons really serve any purpose and while comparing what are the essential things that both the students as well the business magazines forget to focus and miss out on ?
@Germinator while saying students I refer to the B-School aspirants
@Dwaipayan2020 Well, I wouldn't know if students regard IIM-K as a better option, because there are a few here who have turned down offers by IIM-K and IIM-S. That aside, I will try to address your queries to the best of my abilities.

There is not much of a difference in the placements of IIM-K and IIM-I (Average salary, domain wise split, etc.), as per 2012 Final Placement reports, though IIM-I had a higher batch strength (443 as opposed to 317), and it was the first time we had such a high number (Increased from 240 to 450 in a single year). In fact, the average salary of Top 250 was close to 16 lpa, and the average salary for the batch remained the same compared to the 2011-13 batch even with the increase in batch strength. Summer placements this year has shown encouraging signs for the placement season up ahead (100 new companies visited the campus). IIM-I also happens to be one of the very few campuses in India visited by Boston Consulting Group. You can find details of placement here:

Now that the most important aspect of a B-School for most students in India has been detailed, let me go over the other details.

IIM Indore has historically suffered a location disadvantage, as Indore has not been very accessible from the smaller cities, which plays a huge part in the perception of the institute in the minds of students. But the scenario is changing rapidly, and the city is well connected at the moment.

I would not know much about the campus and faculty in IIM-K, and hence would not be able to compare the institutes with respect to those aspects. IIM-I, though youngest among the older IIMs, is the fastest growing IIM in the country, and that comes with its own set of advantages.
@Dwaipayan2020 Now on to the second part of your question.

I'd be very honest with you and say that I wanted to make it to IIM-A or IIM-B, mostly because of the placements and campus life. But it would be foolishness to turn down an offer from any of the other older IIMs, especially I, L or K. In that sense, there wasn't much difference in what I perceived and what I actually found here. Same with my peers in other B-Schools. In fact, most things about an IIM are available freely on the internet, mostly on their own websites, and the only ones who suffer a change in perception are the ones who do not research properly and blindly follow the herd.

Which brings us to the third part, about B-School ratings.

Now, if you ask me, B-School ratings are important because they inform the aspirants and general public about how good or bad an institution is, and how it ranks relative to others. But what is even more important is the aspects of a B-School that are considered for rankings. And this is where the dispute starts. Every website/magazine has a different set of parameters that they consider for rating a B-School. I would not be in a position to authoritatively state that one is wrong and the other is right. But the parameters that you should consider while choosing a B-school, IMO, are Infrastructure, Campus life, Quality of faculty, Quality of peers, Value addition to your personality, Student activities, and of course, placements.

B-School life is very different from what you would expect it to be. Classes form a very small part of it. The time you spend interacting with your peers is much more than the time you spend interacting with the faculty. Hence, quality of peers is a very important factor that should be taken into account. Also, choose a residential programme, since you learn a lot outside the classroom just by taking part in all the activities, and staying close to the campus as a dayscholar is nowhere close to it.
@Germinator Thanks for the vivid explanation , please do not be troubled if I keep bothering you with further queries in the days to come
@Dwaipayan2020 Glad to help.

With less than 48 hours to go for CAT results, here is the eligibility criteria, selection procedure and shortlisting criteria for admission to PGP Batch of 2013-15 of IIM Indore:

@Germinator :
In the selection criteria of IIM indore...It is written that normalization scheme will be used to balance the scores of 10th,12th and graduation across boards...How does this happen?
I am worried because inspite of being in top three position in 10th and 12th in school..I have just 70% marks in 10th as well as 12th....This is because I am from Jharkhand board in which scoring more than 80% is just impossible...Even the state Topper managed to get 78% in 10th...So What will happen in this case?

It means that all scores will be plotted against a normal distribution with mean as the average score of all applicants from the respective board and the corresponding standard deviation. If you did well with respect to your own board among those who apply to IIM-I, you have a good chance of obtaining a high score.

@Germinator Sir, there is no weight age of cat score anywhere?? i mean except for cut-offs , how would high percentile be differentiated from low percentile 1s
