HI,
I have taken this from CAT2k2 group, and am posting this for those who are not the members of that group.

It is written by a student of IIMC, he has completed one year of his course there.
================================================================
Looking back at one year in IIM C the most memorable moments of the year are
the ones out of campus: the management meet at TAPMI, Manipal; The IIM C vs
XLRI sports meet; Marketing research project work at Pantaloons where I had
to be for 6 days on the shop floor; The quizzes for which I participated
outside IIM C with the Kweej Club; The merry parties at the malayali hotel
with the gang of keralites; the long train trips home with station food; the
placement season and now a summer internship with nearly a quarter of the
250 batch in different companies in Bombay. Here are some aspects of life in
the last year which I recall : fondly or otherwise.

Sports : 2 weeks : Once for Inter hostel meet and once for IIM C vs XLRI
meet. Rest of the time computer games: AOE/AOM mainly. Official game: Footer
where on a badminton court with a volleyball one team tries to put the ball
across the net with the use of foot and head only. Table tennis happens
through the night. Also isolated incidents of tennis, shuttle, cricket and
football every term for regular players.

Quiz: Prizes won by IIM Cians in quiz include 2 Fieros, One Xerox machine
for the institute, Digicams, Colour printers, Holiday packages etc. Cash
prizes are rare and not significant. Worst prize: IIT Kharagpur Open Quiz:
IIM C won the 1st and 2nd : 2nd prize was 4 IIT Kgp- Springfest T-shirts.
1st was 4 T-shirts and a Kitkat and a written CD on How to Build a Resume.

Parties: happen often during weekends with music, dance and booze.
Unofficial parties happen every moment in some room or the other you just
got to know the right people and the right room numbersJ

Cultural fests have been replaced by Management fests: which in addition to
Certs and Cash give valuable CV points. The IIM C fest Intaglio had over 50
% of prizes and 75% of participants from IIM C. Cash prizes here range 5,000
and above. At one fest the prize for the individual best young business
leader was 30,000 cash + 70,000 worth gifts: net one lakh. Which event? Find
out cos I plan to try my hand there next year.

Man fests also provide a scope for budding talents to write papers and
travel to Indian subcontinent and beyond for presentations. At St.Gallens,
Switzerland this year there are 6 IIM Cians out of 250 participants
worldwide chosen to have a paid trip to Swz. Lords of Google and Cut N Paste
need sparks of creativity to start cracking papers with word and ppt
skills taken as basic essentiality.

Student Exchange: 80 students : 1/3rd of the batch is going abroad for a
term with main centres Sweden, Germany, Spain, Norway, USA , Thailand,
France etc. Expenses 1 to 2.5 lakhs depending on how you live there.

The students council handles the students affairs but powers are not
absolute and in a lot of cases the final word is of the teachers : even for
the step or for representing IIM C outside a lot of decisions are taken by
the teachers / PGP office and invariably the first criterion they look at is
academics: depending on your CGPA the choice is made rather than on the
merit of the person and his fit into the profile: this aspect sucks for me
cos though I have gone for N competitions and won prizes in case someone
wants to go for an event I am going for the person with the higher CG will
go through. Selection of teams for IIM A confluence is by LOT the height
of competition and this is the manner of selection: in these aspects I think
my engg college was more oriented towards talents.
TV: with one TV for 200 students in my hostel TV watching is an art and a
skill: finding a place in the TV room esp 20 min before match needs skill
and to retain the place throughout the match is an art. There is a
complementary commentary running by the side and this is intensified when
ads come. In some ways the comments on advertising obtained in the common
room are more insightful than those in the texts. There is also bickering in
the ranks mumbai vs Blore lobbies ie Sachin vs Dravid + Srinath + Kumble
and side kick comments on Punjabis: Y singh & H singh and the one and only
Bengali Dada.

Mohans : the one shop where u get anything : from sutta : cigarettes to
fruits to tennis balls to cell phones and confirmed tickets for any train
tomorrow any class for a premium of 300 rupees only. He is supposed to be
the best manager in IIM C not least due to the profits he makes and does not
disclose.
He also runs the mess in the Old hostel and when the food is bad you have to
eat at Mohans to keep your tummy going when you have already paid for the
mess. Profits Inc.

The music troupes are exotically named Baro c ( 12 c ) and JBS owing to the
bus routes in that direction but average troupes in performance. The iim c
people know only limted parts of Calcutta unless they are localites: one
airport, one railway station, tollygunge metro station: closest metro to iim
c and Park street : for pubs and shopping and chandni Chowk : for computer
peripherals, cds , and other essential stuff needed by a student.

True politics has nothing to do with parties it is to do with college/ place
where you come from: one eg: 18 set of people for a wing had to be reduced
to 13 for allocation: in spite of people being sideys for a whole year they
throw out 5 non delhiite people though there are people who come from other
wings in it. And the 5 were left in the lurch 2 hours before room allotment
with even a hey- ho. Delhi with nearly a 100 people base are a lobby of its
own. Something that actually drives others to form groups more in
self-protection than anything else: vicious circle.

Project work: interesting part of life but you have to work for it : some
people manage to free ride ie get their name published on the report
without them having done even a bit of the work or much less than their fair
share. Free riding is an art few perfect cos once u have a reputation of a
free- loader people dont take you into project groups and then all free
riders left over form groups and then some have to work: some still dont
and they become Studs.

IMS and other coaching institutes take people for coaching ie part time job:
which pays 200- 400 bucks an hour depending on your bargaining skills but
costs a lot of time in travel owing to the distances that have to be
covered.

Dont believe statistics they can be made to look like anything you want:
officially IIM C average annual salary is bought out to be 6.2 lakhs per
annum for 2003 batch but from the figures heard about by companies on campus
the figure is more around 5 lpa: people are saying that one should be happy
with a job which gets you 25 k to 30 k in hand. Every institute has dirty
linen to wash about placements, which is better not done in public. But that
doesnt mean what is said is true: most of what looks good is false or
corrected. Having more companies come to campus does not mean good: it means
bad as you are sure your top recruiters wont take as much as they took last
year and that some of them are not coming. Transparency is bullshit. Be
happy to get a job and happier to get a good one. Good contacts will help
you a long way in getting the job of your choice.

Freedom of speech is something just preached but not practiced. I cant put
numbers on the placement scenario as this will be a violation of the
guidelines: because placement data can be given out only by the placement
office: but to a query on last years companies, salaries offered, people
taken and their grades placement office is adamantly silent saying it cannot
be revealed. When the placement office had the full data on summer placement
companies the students were expected to fill in an excel sheet on their
companies: though the placement office has full time paid staff besides the
students reps. For summers we were to be allotted faculty guides and though
we knew our companies in august / September we got guides on 15th March when
exams got over on 13th march and iim c interviews were happening with holi
around the corner. I havent met my summer guide because he had left for a
conference in Dhaka and would come back only by 25th when I left IIM C on
19th. IIM C is a place where you can learn first hand on a number of things
on How not to do basis when it comes to management.

Exaggerations are unbounded when it comes to CV preparation: the batch is so
proud of its CVs that more than 50 % of the batch has refused to put up his/
her CV for others and juniors to see. Lots of Hungama happened over CV
frauds and no action was taken. When some people wrote a clubs name on
their CV they were fined, as the club was not a recognized one by the
place office though an existent one.

End of the day the brand IIM C matters more than the education we get there.
The batch is talented and all ok but the batches there are also a perfect
learning ground on various behaviors of any kind. All I hope from my second
year is a few good fun + educational projects, less of dog eat dog politics,
good internet facilities which will hopefully get me a few paper writing
shortlists, travel around the place: Sikkim, Darjeeling, Sunderbans, Nepal,
Bhutan, Bangladesh etc and finally a decent job. To expect more would be a
crime.

For people coming in to a MBA in the next academic year use the time before
classes to read up on :
Accountancy : basics, balance sheets, cost acounting, financial management:
interest rates et al;
Economics: basics of micro and macro:IS-LM curve;
Statistics: probability, correlation, regression;
Organisational Behaviour: Luthans/ Robbins- fast read will suffice.

I am off for a 2-month training in Mumbai in TAS: Tata Administrative
Services. Company: Tata Infomedia. Project: Scoping of 2 new magazines in
Indian market. Signing off as an unembedded reporter
