Hey,
For all those who have got calls for gdpi, i have a great idea.
We(interested 10-15 people) can make a hangouts group and do GD practice in a conference call on a daily basis. I strongly feel that this is going to help us a lot.
Interested people can drop their email id.
People who had Banglore as centre and have recieved the mail, what are the dates and location?
TIA

This is a detailed account of my IIFT interview process last year. To begin with, let me skip to the end. I was rejected. Straightaway. No waitlist. No mercy. Straight reject. Of course, each failure is a lesson. IIFT interview for me - like for many of you; starting in a week's time - was the first MBA interview of my life and I was all over the place in that room which eventually led to my rejection. However, I was able to take the lessons forward and convert all the other calls I had that season. That being said, hop on!
Venue and Date: Golkonda Hotel, Hyderabad. 12 February, 2019. Afternoon Slot, 13.45 IST (Please be punctual. They don't look kindly at the folks who show up late).
Profile: 92/88/72. GEM from an NIT.
Work Ex: 23 at the time of interview.
IIFT Percentile: 99.32
There were two panels. And two interview groups, each with 12 candidates. The panel that oversaw my group's WAT/GD would take the interviews of the other group and vice-versa.
After the formal greetings, we were taken to our respective rooms for WAT-GD.
Panel of 3. They just observed us for the entire duration.
WAT: Failure- stepping stones or stumbling blocks? (As fate would have it, this would define my MBA season for 2018-19)
Word Limit: 300 words; Time Limit: 15 minutes.
There was ample time for this. Started off well, gave a few examples from the business world; took a stand after discussing both sides. Ending could have been better.
GD: Is US dominance over?
Everyone was given 1 minute to speak initally and then the floor was open for discussion. IIFT GD was the most comfortable GD i have been a part of, mainly coz of that initial ice breaker of a minute. Lots of good points were discussed. US-China trade war, Mr. Trump's policies, rise of third world nations, impact of Asia-Pacific region on trade and of course, rise of China. Panel appreciated us after the GD. A couple of soft speakers who had contributed little were given a chance to conclude.
"Okay, so this is going good. Another 15-20 good minutes and that is it". Sipping coffee with some good quality Osmania biscuits in the short break between GD and the interviews, my thoughts had already skipped to the fairytale ending. The real test was a few minutes away, I had almost forgotten. I was the first in my group to be interviewed, courtesy of my application number.
IIFT Interview:
Panel of 3. 2 males; M1, M2. 1 Female F1. Poor me: I.
F and M1 were sitting in the room. Greeted them, they replied curtly and asked me to take a seat. Fun begins.
M1: So you went to Kashmir for your graduation? (This would be the initial reaction of every panel in my season. You can't take Kashmir out of discussions even in an MBA interview room)
I: Yes Sir.
M1: And?
I: Sir?
M1: Why did you go there?
I: I only got that college through my entrance exam ranks.
M1: Really?
I: Yes Sir. (Mistake #1, they wanted me to elaborate on my decision to go to a controversial place). Female Interviewer interrupts now.
F: So what do you do in your company?
I: Told my role in the company.
F: And what have you learnt from your work ex?
I: Learnings?
F: That's what I asked!
I: Started to utter something along the lines of leadership, linking it to my grad days...
F: Please limit your answer to only work ex. We've already been through your college days. (Mistake #2)
I: Sorry mam.
F: Go ahead.
I: So basically, I tried to lead my own team.
M1: Tried to lead. How do you try to lead. You either lead or you don't. Don't you agree?
I: Yes Sir, I sir... (fumbles more)
M1: Forget it.
F: What is your company's visa policy?
I: Visa rules have become strict for many countries now. Not easy to get one these days.
F: That's not the policy. That's a setback.
I: Yes mam. US especially has become difficult to...
F(Interrupts): You are once again addressing the setback. Didn't you listen to my question? (This wasn't even a stress interview anymore, this was death by a thousand cuts and I had just received my 100th)
I: Yes mam.
F: So?
I: Sorry mam. I don't know.
F: Toh pehle hi btaa dete. (In Hindi)
M2 enters now.
M2: Why are you looking so nervous? And where is the beard? (He looked at my admit card which had a bearded look).
I (A petrified chicken in the butcher's shop by now): Sir, removed it.
M2: Okay. I can see that. But why? Aise hi aa jaate.
I: Yes Sir.
M2: ???
I: ???
M2: Gives up. (Mistake #3. That was a lifeline)
M1: What is data localization? (The global event question waala part)
I: Told. In detail. For about 3 minutes. It was like a life saver. I had prepared it really well. Or so I thought.
M1: Good.
M2: Why do you think it's important?
I: Told.
F: Which was the first country to implement this?
I: I don't know mam.
(All laugh)
F: So, what's the cutoff date for India?
I: Told
M1: So that must mean it's implemented now.
I: Yes Sir.
M1: So, is it?
I: Umm... Not sure Sir. (BLUNDER. Contradicting my own statement from a second ago and not having an answer for something I chose)
M1: Not sure?
I: No Sir.
(All smirk)
F: Okay. What is critical thinking? Why do you think it's important for a manager?
I: Told.
F: Okay. Care to elaborate a bit more? (I was in the seventh circle of hell by this point; point of no return. The day was over)
I: Fumbled something.
F: Okay. You may leave now.
I: Ran for life without even acknowledging them. (Another BLUNDER)
Verdict: Straight Reject. No surprises. Was expected.
Lessons and thoughts: They gave me enough opporutnities to come back. Tried some easy and very basic questions as well which I should have been able to answer. My nerves got better of me that day. The panel was good. 1 student from my group converted Delhi, 2 others converted Kolkata so it's not like they were there only for eliminating people.
Suggestions: Be confident. They are not in there with an agenda. Know your form inside out, especially that global events question. I barely know anyone who wasn't asked a question regarding that last year. Know your work ex, company policies, you roles and responsibilites, future aspirations and you should be through. I went back to work on my shortcomings and successfully converted all the other calls I had last season.
Major Note: No percentile guarantees a selection or rejection. A great interview can land you in Delhi even with a 95.xx. A pathetic interview like mine won't land you even in a waitlist, no matter what your percentile is. The post isn't intended to scare the candidates. It's a grim reality. The competition is immense and intense in India. You have to do well in all the rounds to guarantee a selection.
All the best everyone :)
Of course I am open to queries. So, shoot.
Congratulations on receiving GD-PI call from IIFT!
But, the journey doesn’t end here as the call to conversion ratio of most of the B-Schools is less than 20%. Be prepared for this final step with the institute with the best conversion ratio in the country(97%).
