IIFM Genesis/ Introduction..
Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) is one of the best sectoral B Schools of India. It came into being on the recommendations of the FAO/SIDA Forestry preparatory Mission to India.IIFM was registered as a society in January 1982 and the 1st batch was admitted in 1988.The institute is under the purview of the Ministry of Environment and Forests,GOI, MOEF with direct access to resources from the ministry. It is situated in the City of Lakes ( Bhopal). Specialisations offered:
Development Management
The Course offers a specialization module in Development Management to provide young graduates an insight about the changes in the rural environment so that they can better utilize their skills in developing sustainable rural livelihoods and help in easing the pressure on natural resources. The module focuses on skill development in areas of rural enterprise development, rural finance including microfinance, rural marketing, rural retailing and natural resource management. The focus is not merely to ingrain a sense of rural reality, but also augment the decision-making capacity in the students with respect to flexing conventional models of finance and spatial analysis towards a more comprehensive rural solution

Environmental Management
With global warming and climate change turning certainties and of immediate concern to todays age, it has become crucial for companies to incorporate environmentally responsible management systems into their mainstream business. Also, as local solutions to global environmental problems find increasing favour with policymakers across the world, there arises a need to develop efficient market interventions to capture the entire social costs of environmental externalities. It is in this light that the specialized module on Environmental Management finds a place in the Course, and envisions the creation of developmental capacity in the students in areas of CDM and carbon trade, environmental economics and modelling, risk analysis ,finance and auditing.

Conservation and Livelihood Management
The keystone of the Institute, Conservation and Livelihood Management seeks to synergize the strong bases in forestry built over the first year of the Course with the wider field of Natural resource-Community linkages. Understanding that community play a key role not only in conservation but also livelihood generation through such conservation, the module converges the scientific principles of responsible natural resource management with the customized needs of individual communities using the increased leverage of catalyst organizations to bring about a holistic solution to social problems in the environmental domain

What type of job profiles are offered to the passed out?

I am interested in pursuing the PGDFM offered by IIFM. I am a BCom(Marketing Management) student currently in my third year from St. Xavier's College,Kolkata . I took up marketing specialization because of the Rural Marketing paper and keeping IIFM in mind. Can you please tell me what were the cut offs for getting the calls and the general cut offs for converting these calls, last year???? were there any sectional cut offs??? tell me something about the infrastructure and the faculty???

really sorry for so many questions but i am really serious about IIFM,even though i am facing lots of resistance from all sides...

listen buddy iifm has got infrastructure of one of its kind...a big lush green campus surrounded by forest and lakes..many senior most IFS officers teaches us.. and there are many other faculties who are very good in there subject(so forgot these issues when you think of iifm).

regarding cutoffs....i suggest you to be in safer side try to score in the range of 88+ , as cat score has 70% wieghtage and pi is 20% so it lots depends on your interview where you will be tested on the reason of joining iifm as it is sector specific.(it all depend upon your interest as you will be rejected even on getting good percentile.....so your pi matters a lot as we have lowest admit with 78 percentile but he is very upbeat about iifm and this sector....so hope you understand).

will be passing out in 2012..did my interns with Aga Khan Rural Support Program.. and my project was better than any other b school..it was related to developing a marketing, supply chain and pricing strategy for tribal products in Gujarat...you can see the profile tht was offered during internship..others in our batch had similar quality work...in environment, commodities, micro finance, research etc...with international placements and internship opportunities..

hv seen top b school students getting projects related to sales or business development.. we have niche capabilities which blends modern business education with focus on solving social issues..hence you hv knowledge of both and an edge when compared to other run of the mill courses..

about the job profile and institute queries..below links will give you lot of insights..

Hello Sir,
is it necessary to choose specialization before admission, or is it done after the first year? and also do core(meaning forest, and environment based companies) place students here? i know it sounds dumb, but i had to ask., having studied instrumentation in a college where only IT companies come for placements :P

P.S. also, what is the way to get involved into Indian forestry and wildlife conservation, as IFS is a separate thing?

hi sireeshy,

My main concern is that while there are many companies in this list, many banks and financial institutions included because of the microfinance subject, are the packages for the core specialisations also in the same level? say will a WWF or a forest development agency pay similar pay in comparison with the banks? while the average pay is a very comforting number, i wanted to confirm .
