No plans of privatizing any PSB

proceedings still going on tune in

Breaking from tradition, the finance ministry on Thursday opened top jobs in five large state-run banks to the private sector and said it is willing to offer a "flexible" salary package as part of its plans to professionalize the boards of public sector lenders.

Applications have been called for managing directors and CEOs of Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and IDBI Bank. While PNB, BoB and Canara Bank have been without full-time chiefs for months, IDBI and Bank of India chiefs are due to retire later this year.

This will be the first time that the government is looking at some sort of a "market-based salary" that goes beyond the government scales in public sector banks. The finance ministry also indicated its eagerness to look for younger candidates as those in the age group of 45-55 years have been asked to apply.

Although the age has been lowered, the government is only giving a three-year term to the successful candidates, who at present can be working with public sector companies, government or regulatory agencies. The finance ministry said the candidates should have at least 15 years experience in mainstream banking, of which three years should be at the board level. Bankers complained this may open the doors to mid-rank managers working in bank subsidiaries to apply for top jobs.
