HKUST is good.. Rank #40 something in recent FT global rankings. #1 in international experience. I think its worth the money. Exchange programs and student services department r also good. The only problem I can see is the job placement. enquire more about average starting salary.. Companies that recruit.. The whole program + living costs would cost u around 18 -20 Lacs. It should take around 2.5 years to pay back the loan (provided u finance ur MBA completely by educational loan).
thanks mooz!
hey, anybody knows someone who has been to HKUST or is planning to?
would be a great help if i get some insider info for the place.

Hey Piyush.. I have got final admits from HKU and CUHK for MBA 2005 programmes. Since HKUST, HKU and CUHK come in the same league.. it wud be better if we share our knowledge about hong kong b-schools, placements etc.. I tried gathering info about these schools but I am stuck as I am unable to get in touch with schools' alumni. Lets come together buddy..
Anyone interested in knowing more about hong kong b-schools.. please let us know.
- Mooz
Friend ..please gather info ASAP and also find out how many Indian;s have got jb there aftre their MBA.. looks like the job scene is biased towards chinese speaking ppl and these MBA schools don't have recognisition even in HK... hardly any company comes to HKUSt then forget abt CUHK and HKU.. go to CUHK only if they give u full aid.. fool them by saying u got admit in HKUST and they will waise everythign:-)
these MBA schools don't have recognisition even in HK...
No no yaar.. they r considered 'good' schools in HK. But I am just not sure about campus placements.. I am unable to figure out a way to gather inside info.
see the website info can be misleading i guess... u can ask students in HKUST abt placements and they will also not assure u that u wil get a job here.. everyone knows that u have to try hard for a job when out of india so no wants wants to commit anythign.... its pretty confusing... any idea abt its placements when compared to NUS or CUHK etc... did u people find out the language hinderances that people face .. i have been told that china specific jobs and local HK companies job will surely need chinese language knowldege so this MBA rules out these companies... what remains is MNC's in china.. now that is a gamble.... abt learning chinese i can say its as hard as it gets....
i am not discouraging anyone but my view is to take a final plunge these thigns need to be seen.... even i have to commit by 15th April abt my admit...
anshu_123 Says... what remains is MNC's in china.. now that is a gamble....
I fully agree with you.. Investment banks in China/HK go for graduates from top US schools only. MS, GS and other top IB's dont recruit from HK schools.. hardly 1-2 graduates r able to make it in these top IBs'.. that too thru networking.
I got this info from a HK discussion forum..
So i guess we are left with few placement options.. MNCs' .. and that too wud require networking..
Average starting sal is somewhere around $60,000 per annum.
So what do u say.. Is it worth the risk?
- Mooz
well mooz whats tha forum boss where this discussion happended... may be i can find some answers to questions there...
networkng.... what does that mean??? people in industry arrange for interview in IB or they get u inside... from indian , point networking means that u make a perosn come inside the company as an employee.. but such procedure in IB is a bit difficult i guess.. must have contacts at real big levels to get something of this done.. no one is sure of their job in IB what will they do for others:-)...
but then only MS,JPM or etc are not their inIB.. there are other smaller ones also which can be taken and also there are consulting compaines also and also IT ones..whats the report on these....
in all its better to have a job backup in india and then venture there in HK.. so that even if u are to come back then u have atleast ur present job with u , if not the dream job for which u went to HK..
Hi all
From some recent reports of alumni from HKUST, placements have been decent for the 2005 passing out batch...85% placed within 3 months of with an avg.salary of hkd 450,000 p.a. which is ok....
It is true that marketing jobs are tough to find in hk due to the language problem..and mandarin is not exactly an easily learned language (especially a business level one)...but the whole decision has to be seen with an eye on the asia pac market ..singapore,KL,bangkok etc and also in terms of ROI....US schools the top ones are great bets but at costs of 50-70 lacs, the risks are higher also...one needs to individually gauge one's risk apptetite and objectives....HKUST is a shorter mba..12-16 months for those who want to stay minimal time away from work, is amongst the few schools in asia with accreditation from equis and aascb which are the 2 globally recognised standards for management education quality..and has a world renowned EMBA program with Kellogg which is testimony to the schools quality and potential....Its not a school that should be ignored easily....
Ofocurse, there are other options in asia as well like AIM Manila and NUS...But as most would tell you...AIM's great reputation is under scruitiny...placements are weak off late...school's marketing needs to improve..though the school does have a very powerful course curriculum and pedigree...and the location in manila does have its own disadvantages....AIM needs to be relooked at....despite its blue chip reputation...
ALL INT'L B SCHOOLS have placements which can seem dicey at first and networking led....but thats the international format...not like indian b schools where one sits and laps up job offers...and networking in the int'l sense doesnt always mean 'contacts'...it also means constantly being in touch with prospects and showing value and then trying to get a job....
Risks are there...One needs to decide how much, when and with what one wants to....
At the end of the day, one needs to pick up a good quality program which has above average content, some globally accepted strength areas (hkust's is finance and accounting) and which is marketing savvy towards its own brand and a school which gives one a clean good shot at a decent career...rest is upto the individual student and his merit...
Cheers
I have completed my Bachelors of Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunication from Mumbai Uni.
I want to know with no work experience what is my chance of being admiited in HKUST.....
What is the general profile of students of HKUST....is it 100% placement assurity?
if not then how much? Thank You....you can also reply at [email protected]
I have a very funny incident to relate.
Last time at the MBA fair, there was a desi chap at the HKUST counter. My friend Sumit who was somehow enamoured by another chinky babe at the same stall decided to approach them. This is how the conversation went:
Sumit: So how are the placements this year ?
Desichap: Oh ! Almost x% got placed ..... blah blah
Chinkybabe: Looks on with a quixotic look on her face
Sumit: How about Indian students ?
Desichap: Hmm... 1 person got placed.
Chinkybabe: Smiles when she hears the word "Indian"
Sumit: Oh ! And where did he get placed ?
Desichap: He is standing in front of you ..
Chinkybabe: Also sports big grin since desichap has one
Sumit: Oh ! It was you....and HKUST "absorbed" you ?
Desichap: Oh yes ...... Im looking into....blah blah
Chinkybabe: Tries to have a very inquisitive look on her face
*Sumit walks away, disappointed at not having struck conversation with chinky babe
Chinkybabe: Smiles at another enquiry
..............
My comments are reserved. This was a real incident !!
