hi
i am currently in my second yr of engineering. my college is not a high flier and the placement scenario is pretty gleam. i eventually want to do an mba and that too from a university abroad. however i need a good amount of work exfor that. i have a path in mind and need pagalguy's help to tell me if its fine.
i plan to apply for a MSc in the UK in some subject like International Business (Manchester, Leeds etc), or Finance (LBS, Leeds, Bath), Marketing or general Management. these courses are of one yr duration. i plan to work abroad for some years and as and when needed i wud apply for an mba to the top bschools in US and UK. (wharton, lbs, manchester, sloan etc). i feel that way i will gain not only valuable work ex abroad but can also save up money for these exensive mba courses. i cud also get my company to sponsor me for such a course.
now i need your advice on the following points:
1. does this make any sense at all?
2. am i better of doing a 1.5 lakh per annum job in india after i grad to gain work ex (thats abt wht my college can manage). if i do this MSc in management i might not want to do an MBA at all...
3. have any of u such a thing in mind? or have any of u or someone u know aready done something like this?

please guide me in this. i wud be greatful.
thanx
dusht dushyma

i'm using 'IMHO' a lot now a days ...............
what all followed too r IMHO.....

1. does this make any sense at all?

yes dude, it does.

2. am i better of doing a 1.5 lakh per annum job in india after i grad to gain work ex (thats abt wht my college can manage). if i do this MSc in management i might not want to do an MBA at all...

think beyond ur college. dont rely too much on ur college for ur placements. u just relocate urself to a metro, u can definitely find a job and u can break the limits of 1.5. a metro job is much better than some isolated plant jobs, keep it in mind. it'll help u in going abroad and in giving u better exposure.
for ur MSc abroad, the workex is an aiding factor, if not compulsory. so gaining some workex is a gud thing even prior to ur MSc. if u can manage an admisstion with out workex... may b... think of it. but considering the chances for placements and like after ur MSc ( as u r planning to work abroad after MSc), its much better to've some workex.
a specialised MSc in some gud areas is enuf to get an earning job abroad. it can place u well. but the tag MBA can provide is so different and so is the opportunities, growth and the career path itself. so, dont compare MSc and MBA. but if u just need gud money and decent status, MSc is enuf.

3. have any of u such a thing in mind? or have any of u or someone u know aready done something like this?

yea, i do've such a thing in mind. our mod Simba is somebody who is a foren MBA aspirant. and here is the Roarings of Simba ;-) (hey that's a wondeful blog to follow dude !!)

Thanks Rick for the publicity!!

dushyma, My only advice to u is to take life as it comes. You are in ur 2nd year. Try to max ur subjects becos, this is ONE thing that will follow u thro' out ur career (Ur Undergrad!!) Secondly, dont make a definite plan right now.. its good to have a plan but allow some flexibility. Complete ur BE. If Finance interests you, try to utilise ur free time to get some mastery over it. As u graduate, u can weigh ur options & then take it from there!!

All the best!! :-)
Simba
Ps: My Blog is weird becos I am weird. Choose to hear me only at ur rsik!!

hi simba

hi there,

I'm logging on to PG after a long time (2 weeks it seems) and this is my first post in about a month maybe 😃 I just wanted to announce that I won't be checking PG as much as I would like to because of work pressure.

Getting to the point of your questions, let me tell you something.

(1) I took GRE in 1997 with all my might and notched up something like 2210 but didnt go to US to do my MS

(2) I took TOEFL (paper-based) in 1998 for the same. Don't remember score.

(3) I took CAT in 1997/98 and other exams (and got through some lesser known ones like Sydenham etc.) but didnt do my MBA

(4) I took GMAT in 2002 applied and got thru some good bschools in the US (the B-tier) but didnt go

(5) I took TOEFL for the same in 2002 and got something like 293.

(6) I took IELTS (8.5 band) in the hope of applying for Australia for MBA in 2003 again got admit but decided against it.

(7) I took CAT again in 2002 and 2003 without any success. 98.xx and 96.xx resp.

( I took CAT for PGSM at IIMB in 2003, and keeping my fingers crossed for the results.

What did I loose ? About 2 years of my life I might have devoted only to apping and test prep. I studied more of test-taking than any of the subjects in college. I might have spent about 1lakh+ of my dad's and my moolah for the whole thing. I sidelined my career for sometime in 2002 in order to get through some program.

So what does that make me ? A loser ? Probably. I am wise enough to admit it. I have ended up being a perpetual student without ever getting a degree for it. Ironcially, I have no regrets for anything. I am happy the way things have been in life. I have enjoyed simple pleasures which I might have otherwise missed out had I got an admit to a foreign bschool or an Indian MBA program.

So the point I am trying to make is that no one can predict what is in store for you in future. You have to take life as and when it comes and live it. I always remember the John Lennon quote "Life is what happens when you are busy making plans"

Arun

PS: I know I might have not helped you anymore with what I had to say, but just wanted to give you some food for thought.

Hi guys,

After a long search i think i have now stumpbled on the forum on which i can get my query solved.

Well i am in final year of electronics and comm engg from NSIT DU. Gave CAT this year and performed dismally (94.80, Far far below my potential.) I have offers from TCS and IBM Global. Now i am going to give CAT this year again and hope to perform lot better this time.

It was bothering me that how much time i would be able to take out from my company and prepare for CAT. Will only preparing on weekends do? Workex people please clarify.

Since i am currently in 8th sem, i am absolutely free, and would remain free for another 6 months (before joining TCS/IBM). So isnt it better to give GMAT now and preserve the score (which i guess is valid for 5 years) rather than give GMAT after 2 years when i will be thoroughly involved in job and it would become very difficult to take out even 2 days from a week for preparation. Now i can devote almost whole of next 6 months in prep for GMAT.
Or will the 2 year workex will push my capabilities to such a level where i wont need much of a preparation and would obtain higher score than what i am capable of now?
So what will u advice me to do? Give GMAT now (with ample time for preparation) or after 2 yrs of workex (which , maybe, will help increase my scores)

desperately waiting for ur replies

hi pg
no no. dont go by the title. this question is not for simba only. can someone tell me if the uk has a distinctoin between government and private universities? i mean does such a thing exist there at all?

hi pg
i need some advice on IELTS. it has a listening section. are we allowed to answer the listening part while actually listening to the part or do we have to do listen to it first and then answer it?
also can someone tell me which are the best books for IELTS preperation?
thanks

Hi all,

I am also having the same question in my mind. Though I am giving GMAT in this July, I am not able to decide whether I should apply for Fall 2007 or wait for one more year. Currently I am working with an automobile company after passing out from IIT Kgp in 2005. By 2007 July I'll be having work ex of 2 years.
One more option I am thnking about is of doing MS finance in some B-school in US and then earning in dollars mbefore applying for a full time MBA. Pls suggest me.

Thanks

Hi Vinay,
I am in delhi, if u need any help I will be more than happy to assist u.

Hi Puneet,

I think, one more year of work-ex will be better. In my opinion if u get involve in some community work too, that will really strengthen ur application.

Hi Shailendra,
Thanks for replying...I am too thinking on the same line.
But while talking to someone I got the suggestion of applying for Ph.D in mngmnt next year instead of waiting for 2-3 years more for MBA. As Ph.D do not require work experine and also it will be well funded. I am still not able to decide about this. Can you please give me some inputs.

Thanks
Puneet

Hi puneet,

I don't have much idea about Ph.D. You can check sites of schools of your interest and see the requirements for and job prospects of Ph.D. If u have certain schools in ur mind do let me know, i will try to check too.
