GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

but the answer seems to be A.. :(

distinct of .. is an idiom i guess... (correct me if am wrong).. can we use that over here ?.. am sure that being is almost always wrong because of awkward struture.. .. !

of being is mostly incorrect in GMAT because of its passive structure ..but over here i think distinction of being is idiomatic , making A the correct answer. What say ??

cud u kindly expatiate on this a bit ...i dint get what ur trying to say

Cooperative apartment houses have the peculiar distinction of being dwellings that must also operate as businesses.
(A) of being dwellings that must also operate as businesses

(B) of dwellings that must also operate like business
(C) that they are dwellings that must operate like business
(D) that, as dwellings, they must also operate like businesses
(E) to be a dwelling that must also operate as a business

As B C and E are ruled out for not making proper comparisons(action is compared with a noun)......but in option A and B . "opearate as business.." is the same .... so cant we go a head with option E.?.. by basing only on the idiom "peculiar to" (am not sure whether i can look out idiom in this manner) .

did u go thru my previous post in which i hv explained y i chose A as the answer.
Coming to ur query, i think " peculiar distinction to be " is extremely awkward ..plus E also has the parllelism error of dwellings (plural ) n business( singular).

btw r u sure that the answer is A ....oderwise i wud look like an idiot telling all this to u 😞

heard challenges----- the part after comma should say something about challenges
A.including among them ---is awkward and also not grammatically correct
B.use of which (refers to company here) makes one to think company included the threat.Illogical
C.included among is awkward
D.among them X and Y, where X and Y are parallel is the correct construction. the threat of a rival's parallels the decline in sales of the company's.
E.I think it has to threat of---
infringement suit or threat from a rival. Also sales of company's not sales for company's
My answer is D

Shiva,
Straight away we can remove A,C & E because "sales of" is the idiom.
Now between B & D, I also chose D but the ans given is B thats why I posted this question.

Hi guys,

The Cordoba bill requires that a company pay the full cost of any environmental damage caused by its actions in the last ten years.

D a company to pay the full cost of any environmental damage caused by their actions in the last ten years.
E that companies pay the full cost of any environmental damage caused by actions in the last ten years.

Don you guys think it should be "pays" in the option A to make it correct.
Is it pay coz it represents the infinitive verb form?

according to me it should be A.
B is out coz it uses resembling. D is out coz it uses Neanderthal's while later on "were" is used. The sentence should begin with Neanderthals to make it grammatically correct.
E is not grammatically correct as there is no "they" after "and so".
C is grammatically incorrect.

Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes and so were probably without language, a shortcoming that may explain why they were supplanted by our own species.

(C) The vocal tracts of Neanderthals resembled an apes
(D) The Neanderthals vocal tracts resembled the apes
(E) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes

Shouldn't it be (B)? I think that
Neanderthals are the subject of the statement. They were without language and so supplanted by present human beings.
Vocal tracts were not replaced by human beings!

Is it pay coz it represents the infinitive verb form?

Here, two approaches may be correct "requires that (a) company pay" or "requires a company to pay"

"requires" makes it into subjunctive mood so "pay" is right, not "pays". you may refer to Manhattan SC guide for more detailed explanation.

Evaluating all the options here, only (A) is correct.
Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes and so were probably without language, a shortcoming that may explain why they were supplanted by our own species.
(A) Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes
(B) Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an apes
(C) The vocal tracts of Neanderthals resembled an apes
(D) The Neanderthals vocal tracts resembled the apes
(E) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes

Vocal tract is singular..
So 'those' doesnt go with that..
So I think 'B' is a better option
can some one explain this...

Discrimination in wages paid in occupations that are predominantly male over the predominantly female have given rise to substantial differentials between the wage of housepainters and secretaries and between the wages of parking-lot attendants and library assistants.
(A) paid in occupations that are predominantly male over the predominantly female have
(B) paid in occupations that are predominantly make over those that are predominantly female have
(C) that favors predominantly male occupations over the predominantly female have
(D) that favors predominantly male occupations over those that are predominantly female has
(E) paid in predominantly male occupations over the predominantly female has
guys can u post an expln for this one??

Bill Walton continued on playing, even though he had injuries that recurred over and over again, always hoping to return back to his position as a regular starter in the game he loved.

(A) on playing, even though he had injuries that recurred over and over again, always hoping to return back

(B) playing, in spite of recurrent injuries, always hoping to return

(C) playing, though injured over and over, and he was always hoping to return back

(D)on playing, even with injuries that recurred, and always hoped to return

(E) to play, despite recurring injuries, hoping that the return

Sandy the answer is B.
the phrase "return back" is not correct. So A and C are eliminated.
"continued on playing" is incorrect.D is gone.
E is no way correct.
So B is the right answer.
May I know the right answer.
Vocal tract is singular..
So 'those' doesnt go with that..
So I think 'B' is a better option

Here B is the right answer because Neanderthals
should be the subject of the sentence and only B agrees in number.
Please let me know what is the right answer..

B is the correct answer.
The comparation is right only in B.

I think d is the correct answer...whats the right ans
there is a diff in the usage of "rather" and "instead".

Rather than is used with verbs but Instead of is used with nouns.

Plus, gerund (verb+ing) is a noun so it will be followed by "instead of".

Could you please give me an example how to use "rather than" and "instead of"?
