Hi Abchekstylo
Thanks for your previous reply. I have one verb tense doubt... getting really confused in the ing forms and need ur help
in 1985 Supreme court passed a judgement, banning people from public smoking...
Doubt 1: Does the present continous tense used here signify that the ban is still in progress...
A related sentence...
The three airlines stunned the world by announcing a merger, creating an alliance.
Doubt2: What do the the two ing's represent here and Doubt 3: what is the flow of events here and why is it correct...
Shiva,
I think..both of us always make same kind of mistakes  ...I also marked it as (B), ensuring that meaning of the original sentence shud not change. but, correct answer given is (C) which directly changes the meaning of sentence!!
Also i read somewhere that we shud not modify the actual meaning of the sentence in an attempt to make it grammatically correct....is it true?
Hi Montaqes,
I saw this question in 100SC and the answer was indeed B. As far as I know which modifies only a noun and the one nearest to it and doesn't modify a noun phrase. Yes we should not modify the meaning but the best answer is one without errors.
Abchek,What is the major error in B? Substance--which(clearly modifies substance---50 times sweeter than sucrose(substance is sweeter right?). I think its construction is like a noun followed by noun phrases .Here the noun phrases modiy the noun not the phrase before it right?
I still think for C to be correct "which" should modify substance otherwise it gives a notion licorice plant is discovered(who discovers a plant which already has a name and looks like a known entity). Thats what I think.
But if this is from OGs and answer is C please do post the official explanation Or abcheck can clear my doubt π ?

Hi shiva,
No, this is not from OGs. Hence, abchek has to clear ur doubts now....
However, as abchek pointed out, (B) also modifies the meaning of the original sentence. it looks like licorice plant is sweeter than sucrose. but it is the substance which is sweeter! Moreover, sentence structure is also grammatically incorrect.
Though (C) clearly modifies the meaning of the original, it at least says that the substance is sweeter and not the licorice plant.
I hope it helps..
Hi Guys,
Have been following this thread for quite some time now. Its time for one from my side
Architects and stonemasons, huge palace and temple clusters were built by the Maya without benefit of the
wheel or animal transport.
(A) huge palace and temple clusters were built by the Maya without benefit of the wheel or animal
transport
(B) without the benefits of animal transport or the wheel, huge palace and temple clusters were built by the
Maya
(C) the Maya built huge palace and temple clusters without the benefit of animal transport or the wheel
(D) there were built, without the benefit of the wheel or animal transport, huge palace and temple clusters
by the Maya
117
(E) were the Maya who, without the benefit of the wheel or animal transport, built huge palace and temple
clusters
Please pitch in with your answers with explanation.
Namil.
The best answer choice is C.
'Architects and stonemasons' is a modifier which is supposed to modify Maya. The only ones that could be close are C and E.
As is wordy and awkward...the correct answer is C.
(C) the maya, , built the huge palace and the temple clusters without the benifit of animal transport or the wheel
Since the modifier is placed closest to wat it is modifying.
Hope this helps...

The major problem with B is that it uses so many commas and modifiers that till the time u reach the end of the sentence, u can't tell what "50 times sweeter than sucrose," is referring to.Is it the licorice plant or the substance?
Besides, the sentence is unnecessarily getting awkward with so many commas.
C is brief, to the point, grammatically correct and sounds good as well.
Montaques, where did u get this question from by the way? I think i solved it once earlier but i just can't remember where it was.

Hi Montaque,
I believe that C also says that licorice plant is sweeter than sucrose.
If recently discovered modifies licorice plant, then 50 times sweeter than sucrose should also modify licorice plant. Hence C not only changes the meaning, it also compares apple with pear. Please do correct me if I am wrong.
B only has comparison mistake. Hence I would go with B.

- option D can be straight away ruled out because it imparts something else.
- I will discard E becauase if it was to be the right option then it should have been something like 'were the maya, who...' (comma should have come earlier)
- option A is wrong because of no comma anywhere
- option B again imparts a different meaning
hence option C appears to be the best option.
{please use the underlines method for indicating the part to be corrected, we are so much used to the way that I personally couldn't concentrate on it π }
C, without doubt, is the best choice. But I am not able to understand the modification - "Architects & stonemasons, the Maya". Shouldnt it be "the Mayans".
The major problem with B is that it uses so many commas and modifiers that till the time u reach the end of the sentence, u can't tell what "50 times sweeter than sucrose," is referring to.Is it the licorice plant or the substance?

Hi KingCat,
As Shiva pointed out, "which" is being used in (C) to refer to the subject in the phrase "a substance from the licorice plant" and not to the modifier (i.e from the licorice plant). Actually what u have pointed out is exactly a problem with option (B)
Oh ok π i haven't heard of it for sure.
i will be posting some real-gmat-style questions in a zip file today and let's see if we can reach some conclusions regarding their answers.
sure...eagerly waiting for ur post dude!!!!

Hi Sumit,
1. yeah..i also agree with u..it should be (E) only
2. I think ..correct answer is (D)
=> in (A), "life among" is wrong; and also "hunting and foraging" is not in parallel with agricultural communities. Note that hunting and foraging are not the communities but the "activities" performed by the communities.
=> (B) ...as you pointed out ..THAT is missing
=> (C) ...again subject-verb error
=> (D)... it is not changing the meaning. rather it compares "hunting and foraging grps" with "agricultural communities", and says that both the grps should be viewed as distinct and not as part of a continuum.
=> (E) ..awkward.
3. yeah ..it should be (C) only.
4. I would go with option (A). "less" is correct in this context since it is referring to "amount per capita". I know option (A) is not also very clear and concise, but it is grammatically correct :unhappy:

Hi Checkinn,
let me try to clarify ur doubts
in 1985 Supreme court passed a judgement, banning people from public smoking...
Here participle "banning" is used to modify the subject "judgment"; participles are generally used to create modifying phrase so that some extra info abt the subject can be added to the sentence. Note that "banning', here, is used as "participle" and not as "verb". Therefore, it doesn't say that bann is still in progress!!
The three airlines stunned the world by announcing a merger, creating an alliance.
Though i m not absltly sure abt this...this sentence is not correct; modifier "by announcing...an alliance" is misplaced. As per my understanding, it should come before the subject "the three airlines". plz throw some light on this guys!!!

Oops sorry checkinn, i couldnt even login as my net is down since friday.
Anyway, as far as your doubt 1 is concerned, the sentence doesnt imply that the ban is still in progress. It could be still active or it might have been revoked for all you know.
The second sentence about airlines is redundant in the sense that merger and alliance are quite the same thing. So there's no point in stating both.
for ur doubt 3, the flow should be:companies create a merger and then stun the world by announcing the same.
