Which one of the following is correct 

1. the bear had climbed a tree before the dogs got there.

2. The bear was climbing a tree before the dogs got there?

According to me, either of them can be correct.

#1 is Past perfect. The bear finished climbing the tree by the time the dogs got there. ( follows the rule of past perfect)

#2 is Pas continuous The bear started climbing before the dogs got there. And even after the dogs got there , the bear is still climbing.

in that case both of these sentences are correct?

isn't there any thread for applications???
