The comparison is between Authoritative parents and permissive parents. Choice A is clearly the answer. Choice B is a sentence fragment. Choices C and E have improper comparisons of childeren and parents. CHoice D is out because it contains BEING.

B. Black Americans—including Native Son by Richard Wright and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison

C. a Black American—including Richard Wright, author of Native Son, and Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man

D. a Black American—the others being Richard Wright, author of Native Son, and Ralph Ellison, author of Invisible Man

E. a Black American—the others being Richard Wright's Native Son and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man

The sentence begins with an Appositive modifier followed by a comma. A mixture of Z, Toomer's Cane... one of the best books...others... This is how the sentence is structured. Toomer's Cane needs to be parallel with Wright's ABC and Ellison's XYZ. Although 'being' is not PREFERRED by the GMAT, here we don't have any other option than to mark E.

Diana stared dreamily at the handsome Mr. McKenzie, but Olivia, who hated economics, furiously jiggled her foot, impatient to escape the boring economics class.

In this sentence,

'Diana stared dreamily at the handsome Mr. McKenzie' is the first independent clause joined to another independent clauses by the 'comma+ but'. Olivia is the Subject of the 2nd independent clause followed by the adjectival describing Olivia - 'who hated economics'. 'jiggled' is the verb of the 2nd independent clause. Adverbials answer one of these 4 questions - HOW, WHERE, WHEN, WHY? 'furiously' and 'impatient ... economics class' are ADVERBIALS in the sentence.

Choice 3 is OUT because 'could view' alters the intended meaning of the sentence. Choice 4 is wrong because 'Marraige to Jane Austen...' is not the intended meaning of the sentence. Choice 5 has 'have' which indicates possession. Instead, could have been 'As did....' Choice 2 is OUT because of the wrong placement of the modifier - 'in her novels', which should have been placed next to Jane Austen.

We are left with choice 1 - the best of the 5 options.

These are some questions for today. Get crackin' boyz..... 1) The Federal Reserve Board's reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions is both anacknowledgment of past economic trends and an effort to influence their future direction.(A) reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions is both an acknowledgment of pasteconomic trends and an effort(B) reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions is an acknowledgment both of pasteconomic trends as well as an effort(C) reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions both acknowledge past economic trends andattempt(D) reducing interest rates on loans to financial institutions is an acknowledgment both of past economictrends and an effort(E) reducing interest rates on loans to financial institutions both acknowledge past economic trends as wellas attempt 2) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, fetal heartbeats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy.(A) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, fetal heart-beats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy.(B) Fetal heartbeats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy, using a Doppler ultrasound device.(C) Detecting fetal heartbeats by the twelfth week of pregnancy, a physician can use a Doppler ultrasounddevice.(D) By the twelfth week of pregnancy, fetal heartbeats can be detected using a Doppler ultrasound deviceby a physician.(E) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, a physician can detect fetal heartbeats by the twelfth week ofpregnancy.

For the first question,

The Federal Reserve Board's reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions is both an acknowledegment of past economic trends and an effort to influence their future direction.

(A) reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions is both an acknowledegment of past economic trends and an effort

(B) reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions is an acknowledgement both of past economic trends as well as an effort

(C) reduction of interest rates on loans to financial institutions both acknowledge past economic trends and attempt

(D) reducing interest rates on loans to financial institutions is an acknowledgement both of past economic trends and an effort

(E) reducing interest rates on loans to financial institutions both acknowledge past economic trends as well as attempt

CHECK OUT THE IDIOMATIC USAGE : Both X and Y, wherein X and Y must be parallel. Choices B, D, and E are at once eliminated because they don't confirm to the idiom 'both X and Y'. We can't say both X as well as Y. In choice C by placing the verb acknowledge after the word 'both' leaves the subject Federal Board's reduction without a Verb. So, eliminate C. That leaves us with choice A as the answer.

For the second question,

Using a Doppler ultrasound device, fetal heartbeats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy.(A) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, fetal heart-beats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

(B) Fetal heartbeats can be detected by the twelfth week of pregnancy, using a Doppler ultrasound device.

(C) Detecting fetal heartbeats by the twelfth week of pregnancy, a physician can use a Doppler ultrasound device.

(D) By the twelfth week of pregnancy, fetal heartbeats can be detected using a Doppler ultrasound device by a physician.

(E) Using a Doppler ultrasound device, a physician can detect fetal heartbeats by the twelfth week of pregnancy.

Choice A has a misplaced modifier. The semantics of this choice indicate as though the fetal heartbeats are using the ultrasound device. In B, again the participial modifier erroneously indicates fetal heartbeats. Choice C the order of 'using' and 'detecting' is illogically reversed. In choice D the placement of 'physician is incorrectly placed. That leaves us with E as the best credited response.

E. without the restrictions of passenger trains and railroad timetables or the

Dear All,

First, read the sentence and make sure that you understand the story. Then think of fixing grammatical errors.

In the early part of the twentieth century, many vacationers found that driving automobiles and sleeping in tents allowed them to enjoy nature close at hand and tour at their own pace, with none of the restrictions of passenger trains and railroad timetables or with the formalities, expenses, and impersonality of hotels.

A. with none of the restrictions of passenger trains and railroad timetables or with the

B. with none of the restrictions of passenger trains, railroad timetables, nor

C. without the restrictions of passenger trains and railroad timetables nor

D. without the restrictions of passenger trains and railroad timetables or with the

E. without the restrictions of passenger trains and railroad timetables or the

So, the story is - Vacationers had certain advantages of travelling in their own cars and sleeping in tents, saving them from the hassles of train travel and hotel accomodation.

Did you spot any errors? The underlined part has the structure --> with none of the X or with the Y. The semantics of this version imply that vacationers will either travel without trains and railway timetables or they will travel with hotel accomodation. That's NOT what he is trying to say. He's saying that Vacationers have certain advantages of travelling on their own without the need to worry about train travel and train timetables or the formalities of hotel stay. D has the same problem as A does. Eliminate choices A and D.

In choice B, we need the connector 'and' between 'the restictions...pass. trains' AND 'railroad timetables'. Eliminate B.

In choice C, 'the' is missing before 'railroad timetables'. To maintain parallelism, we should have --> without the X and the Y.

That leaves us with E - the best credited response! 😃
