@EducationAisle in option E "the weakness of the hypothesis which sounds plausible" which refers to what? weakness or hypothesis....also i'll be grateful if u can help me with few of my querries about Subject Verb Agreement...

1. A large decline in oil prices should eventually (Lead/Leads) to...?

2. According to recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land (is/are) still a goal of ....? in this particular subject what's the subject? and aren't we suppose to consider the subject plural if two noun joined by and?

3. A breakwater of rocks that would rise six feet above the waterline and (act/acts) as a buffer..?

4. Wealth is singular/plural?

5. Data singular/plural?

thanks in advance...

@EducationAisle thanks for prompt reply...but as per OG11 Q132 it's "One view of the economy contends that a large drop in oil prices should eventually lead to..." sorry i asked for a large decline instead a large drop...both expression same or different?

is the expression "Strawberries and ice-cream is a high calorie snack." correct?

and one last querry...its regarding Like Vs As..

Just like a glass of water that will not overflow due to melting ice cubes, so melting sea ice does not increase oceanic volume. is the usage of like correct? we know that like is used to compare nouns and noun phrases..in that way a glass of water is a noun phrase and the expression "that will not...." is a modifier...so usage of like is correct..does it make sense?

thanks.

D)

One claims [something] from [something else/some entity]
Eg, Raj claimed Rs1000 from the insurance company.

Basically, claim is a transitive verb and needs an object associated with it.
So saying that "the firm claimed from a one-page writing" is incomplete and incorrect.

@Angadbir

I, too, was confused between C and D.
But then I thought: You can't "claim" an ability, you can "claim" "to possess/ to be able to do".
The answer is D.

Hope it clears.

If you ask me outside of GMAT, I would say that verb-ed modifier work pretty much in the same way as verb-ing modifiers do. i.e. they are versatile modifiers that modify preceding clause when they are separated by comma (Thus, the modifier tired but excited modifies the subject "he" and not the "match) and the closest noun phrase when they are not separated by comma. Thus, in the context of general English, the sentence you have stated is correct. "tired and excited" applies to "he" or the preceding clause. It basically extends the thought presented in the preceding clause. But if you ask me in the context of GMAT, I would say that the rule that I stated earlier applies. i.e. verb-ed modifiers always modify the closest noun phrase. Remember OG is the prescribed syllabus. And there are 3 questions in OG that test the usage of verb-ed modifiers. OG12 #56, 28, 5. Thanks,Payal
Hi Payal, among the questions you have mentioned, in question 5, "surpassed" should modify "death", but it is actually modifying "diabetes".

Would appreciate your response.

@raghavendrarav

Kindly answer this

which one is correct and why

steve, lucy and i

will be going

to harvard university this fall

"will go" indicates a one time action, a for of infinitive. "will be going" means that in the future, there will be a continuous action of "going", which is not the implied meaning here.

Secondly, there is one point that is ignored. You are presenting a list of 3 people. Instead there can be a list of 3 actions. And if ALL 3 are part of the list, separate them with commas. So you present like this:

X, Y, and Z

where

list element 1: X

list element 2: Y

list element 3: Z

X, Y and Z
list elements are
list element 1: X
list element 2: Y and Z

This is extremely important in parallelism cases. So take care.
