This should be A I feel.
Let me try to give an analogy. Suppose you are telling someone about your college which you have not seen for many years. You might say something like "Whenever I think of my college, I remember it (i.e. the college) as it was a little over three years back" the idea being you remember the college, as it was then (and not as it is now)
Here A follows a similar structure.
B is wrong because had been is too clumsy (would you say "he was a good player 3 years ago" or "he had been a good player 3 years ago"?)
C is wrong, because it should be "as it (the star) was" not "as if it was" which would mean we see as if the time had changed.
D is wrong because it does not appear to us now as it appeared 4 years back (which is what this option seems to say) but as it actually was 4 years back.
E is ungrammatical and has a problem similar to C

Best available choice.
@dudeabhi011 said:C. to realize that that when a child grows, his or her
Child does not agree with "enables them"
@dudeabhi011 said:D. to realize that as a children grow, their
A children makes no sense
@dudeabhi011 said:E. realizing that as children grow, their
"One of the points" should be a noun, so would rather have "the realization" than "realizing" as that point.
