This should be A I feel.

Let me try to give an analogy. Suppose you are telling someone about your college which you have not seen for many years. You might say something like "Whenever I think of my college, I remember it (i.e. the college) as it was a little over three years back" the idea being you remember the college, as it was then (and not as it is now)

Here A follows a similar structure.

B is wrong because had been is too clumsy (would you say "he was a good player 3 years ago" or "he had been a good player 3 years ago"?)

C is wrong, because it should be "as it (the star) was" not "as if it was" which would mean we see as if the time had changed.

D is wrong because it does not appear to us now as it appeared 4 years back (which is what this option seems to say) but as it actually was 4 years back.

E is ungrammatical and has a problem similar to C
