GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

@KapTeacherEli said: Hi apatchofsnow,
What's the source of this question?
I ask because four choices use "the critics," which doesn't make sense in this context--a properly constructed sentence would use "critics." The only answer that changes that, (C), introduces a pronoun error ("his" can't replace the adjective Kubrick's). (A), (B), and (E) all have the same pronoun error, so choice (D) is clearly most correct, but this problem doesn't look quite right to me...

Eli
I took these from an old sheet with me..Not sure about the institute.

Crammed into cluttered basement offices close to the TV Headquarters, people in need foundation's corps of permanent staff and volunteers is not weighed down by bureaucracy or hierarchy

A is not weighed down by bureaucracy or hierarchy
B are neither weighed down by bureaucracy or hierarchy
C is weighed down not by bureaucracy nor by hierarchy
D do not let either bureaucracy or hierarchy weigh them down
E does not allow the bureaucracy or hierarchy to weigh them down

I have rejected B, but I am not able to proceed further

'People' are plural, hence A, C, E are incorrect.
In choice B, comparison is wrong due to positioning of 'neither'.
D is not bad to be an answer.

Which is the official answer?

I am assuming 'OF' is missing from this fragment..
people in need OF foundation's corps of permanent staff and volunteers is not weighed down by bureaucracy or hierarchy
Without this addition, I believe the Qn stem is not making much sense.

Also, with this addition, the answer is clearly (D).
Strip apart the unnecessary things, the subject of the sentence is 'People' and hence will take Plural 'DO'.

On a side note, what realy bites me is, ur an alum of IIM L, why are u preparing for GMAT? Preparing for PHD or someting??

I am planning to apply to some top universities..Lets see.

In this question, 'People in need foundation' is a single proper noun...

There is an error, but it's not the one you thing-- People In Need Foundation looks like it should be capitalized, as the name of a group. If this change is made, the right answer can be found.

Why are we using 'AND' here.. y answer cant be B.. is that ' one of them who' will refer to seminar instead of presenters..?

this is a concept of subgroup modifier : i have written a detail analysis here :
http://www.beatthegmat.com/sub-group-modifiers-t92858.html
Since, "whome" can act as a relative pronoun while "them" cannot - "of them" followed by a clause is incorrect. Some other relative pronouns are - "who", "that", "which"...
hope this helps !!

they cannot "impact" themselves. Hence, ruled out .

Ya which refers to Quetzalcoatlus . And 36 feet is not a noun infact, it tells something (some characteristic i.e. length) about Quetzalcoatlus .
