I will chose D here, option A fails because it should be for X and for Y

option C and E have include and with redundancy.

In option B "to include" in second part sounds as if she called for X to include where X is non-living thing and so it didn't make sense.

Somehow sentence looks invalid even in non-underlined part. "which" is referring to research and therefore modifying it. As far as i understand "which" should always refer to noun preceding it.

In addition to being more expensive than manual research....for meaningful sentence it should be that machine based research is more expensive than manual research. So option B

I chose C too but people claimed it is E without much explanation. Only explanation I could guess out of their obscure comments is "or" shouldn't be eliminated as it may change meaning of sentence. I did not understand

E for last choice. Using a verb "is" would make a "comma splice" error in the sentence and B is awkward so E remains correct choice
