GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hi akshat, for given question option C is right answer. This question is from OG10 Q174. It dismissed option a for 2 reasons
1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published - This should be was
2. as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published - that should be used instead of as for relative clause.

I have doubt in the second explanation. How to decide when not to use as ? Because there are various examples where as is used to introduce comparative clauses or prepositional phrase(eg OG12 Q85 option a which is also right answer)

Hi Professional Guy,

even i had d same doubt a couple of days back..... someone at d forum was kind enough to help me.....

Vishal, is option D no. of student or no. of students.
If its no. of students then option D. Else, I would go with A on elimination.

Deepak -- Option D should be the correct answer. B is incorrect. Can you tell me why? or i'll post the reason later.

Out of curiosity.. I should tell you that option B is wrong for the very reason you eliminated the correct option D.

B is wrong - subject - verb are not in agreement.

Most certainly 990-D and 991-E resp.

In 990,all we need to do is tweak one of the options else none would fit well.

You seems to be sailing on 2 boats at a time. I saw in another thread that you are also preparing for CAT. Many experts (I also feel the same) say that this may prove detrimental. preparing for GMAT takes a different approach. For example, the type of Sentence correction questions tested in CAT are totally & absolutely different from those tested in GMAT.

You will end up getting confused.

Also, SC grail is a bad bad book and written in a very ill manner. Almost every expert out there will not recommend you to use that book. Use only trusted resources such as Kaplan, Veritas, Manhattan and the BIBLE-- Official GUIDE.

PS: It's against the PG rules to ask for copyright material. Please don't do that.

Demystifying the GMAT

hth
Actually, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with a number of. But, B is a very curious case of how options can distort the meaning:

1.It says: a number of students in public schools growing steadily. Well, growing modifies students, and so, this seems to suggest that students (and not their number) are growing (as in growing taller, growing stronger or whatever you can interpret).

2.In B, there is a parallelism between the -ing verbs growing and reaching. So, option B reads: a number of students growing.and reaching. Again, students reaching a record high!! Well, that is again wrong, because students are not reaching record high (in any sense); the number of students is reaching record high.
