a -- "using" -- continuous tense for an action that happened in the past
b -- "his using" awkward
c -- "claim for" wrong idiom
d -- nthng seems to be wrong
e -- even though , despite occuring in the same sentence -- awkward

I guess it's D
Galtons claim that fingerprints are unique is almost universally accepted despite using less than one hundred samples for his initial investigation and statistical methods that are not entirely convincing.

A and B are clearly wrong due to sentence format

C - makes a point that galton might have used 100 samples .. but para says less than 100 ..

E is wrong as it places statistical method at the wrong place

so i think answer is D )

Carthaginians are still commonly credited AS THE ONES WHO SALTED roman fields during the punic wars, despite the existence of credible evidence to the contrary.
(1)" "
(2)as the salters of
(3)for salting
(4)with having salted
(5)with the salting of

Correct answer is Option D
Option E is wrong because of the tense issue. Carthaginians salted the fields during the punic war (in past) -- Using salting here is incorrect.
Puys,
Can anyone take up the initiative to post the frequently asked idioms in sentence correction? so dat we could stop baffling !

Manhattan guide and SC Grail both have a list of Idioms which are very comprehensive.
Also, the most used Idioms are highlighted in MGMAT SC Guide, can be used as ready reference.
Best way to learn is to pick all the questions where OG lists the type as Idiom, Style, and learn whatever you can from those questions.

I will try and post some that come to my mind:
X and Y should be grammatically parallel for all cases.

1. Not Only X But Also Y
2. Either X or Y
3. X is more than Y
4. Unlike X, Y
5. So X that Y
6. Expended On (This is from OG12 and I remember this because I got this question wrong)
7. X is more than Y
8. In contrast with X, Y
9. In contrast to X, Y
10. Attributes X to Y

Some miscellaneous ones:

Native to - Used when you talk about a category, characteristic, or species
Native of - Used when you are talking about a person, where he was born

Subjunctive mood, this is quite important, I think most people get at least one question related to this.

Subjunctive mood, this is quite important, I think most people get at least one question related to this.

I actually disagree - it is a myth propagated by the folks at Manhattan GMAT. I don't think you will encounter too many questions on Subjunctive

C)it refuses to discuss permitting leaves of absences to be taken even when they are

I go with option C:

B. on hold - Leaves of absence......When it is
C. on hold -
D. Permitting ....is not discussed
E. they will be justifiable....

So,Option C

Hi All,

I am done with Gmat 740 ( 48 Q, 42 V ) a week back and mostly relieved of any further woes and currently in the process of applying to B-Schools. I have reckoned the Verbal part during my prep times and thought to shed some light mainly on SC Strategy. Perhaps it shall help some of the folks out here. My total prep time was for 2 months out of which i dedicated 2 weeks in whole to nail SC.
SC teaches you written English grammar useful for Business Documentation all through your work phase post an MBA. So, learning it precisely with a focus on good Gmat score and acquire long lasting fundamentals is important. Also, Nailing SC keeps you in good shape for Gmat Verbal and easily provides a means to boost verbal scores( only if you are good at SC and above average with CR and RC )

My SC Strategy :
Some pre-requisites that many fail to understand :

Manhattan Gmat SC is definitely the bible but difficult to comprehend and understand if you are lost with terminology such as participle , transitive verb, subordinate conjunctions, appositive's and many other things.

We dont have time nor the need to go through a dedicated Grammar book such as wren and martin / Doing Grammar. We need to make efficient use of prep time by focussing on all other test sections too.

okay now lets get up and running with an SC strategy :

1. Read Ultimate Gmat Grammar by gmatclub ( just 10 $). It has complete grammar needed from a gmat perspective. It has 500 + gmat like questions too. Most importantly its quick and easy to read. Skip the 4 practice tests intially and read it topic wise along with exercises at the end of every topic to reinforce the concepts learned. Dont bank on more than 2 days to complete this. This provides a quick but detailed review of grammar required to understand manhattan gmat SC guide thoroughly. Alternatively you can use Kaplan Gmat Verbal Foundations for a good review of grammar.

2. Use aristotle prep SC Grail and only read the part 1 : Grammar. ( hardly takes an hour or two , its so concise and quick )

3. Take time to go through Mgmat SC slowly topic by topic ( say 4-5 days )

4. Complete part 2 and part 3 from SC Grail. Practice all 100 questions from the aristotle question bank ( take a day or two complete this ). Impotant : Use the 2-3 split method from manhattan gmat sc book you learnt and also the aristotle 5-way method.

5. Use Og 12 and practice all 140 SC problems from it and then 53 non overlapping SC problems from OG 11 , see the list I provided below. Important : To improve accuracy, do OG methodologically.

An approach to Soving OG 12 :
  1. Say solve as many problems as possible in 2 hours.
  2. Mark all your answers and those you felt tough in an error Log.
  3. Review the solutions to all the problems using aristotle OG 12 solution guide. ( prefer this to OG explanations as it helps you to understand the solutions more easily and helps you to elarn missing concepts )
  4. Next day you start doing OG12 with new set of problems.Even before you start it, Re-do all the problems you got wrong the previous day and get as many as correct. After all you have reviewed them the previous day ).

SC Resources Required :
  1. Ultimate Gmat Grammar by gmatclub
  2. Manhattan Gmat SC Guide
  3. Aristotle SC Grail
  4. Aristotle SC question Bank ( 100 questions with explanations )
  5. Aristotle Solutions Guide to OG 12 SC questions
  6. OG 12 and OG 11 ( SC problems )

Other Recommended SC Material if you have time :
  1. Thursdays with RON - SC Videos ( Free and excellent Resource, Pm me for the link if you are interested )

  2. E-Gmat SC Course ( Free Preview is sufficient if you have got Mgmat SC and Aristotle material )

  3. Eleven SC Videos from revolution prep each of 30 - 40 min and i found them pretty helpful. Just google around . They are a bit pricey and not available individually.

Pm me If you need any of these resources. I have few of them still available.

Non Overlapping SC Questions from OG 11 :

I prefer this to official guide to gmat verbal review ( 1st or 2nd edition ). The reason is verbal review guide consists of easy or medium level mostly from power prep ( old version prior to Gmat prep versions 1 and 2 and non adaptive)or gmat paper tests from mba.com. These are retired and from early years dating back to year 2000.

Sentence Correction List : Total 54 non overlapping questions in OG 11

4 10 12 13 18 23 25 27 30 31 32 34 35 37 41 47 53 61 64 66 68
70 71 72 76 77 78 80 82 83 84 89 91 92 93 94 99 100 103 104 107 108 110
112 116 118 119 120 122 123 124 125 130 137

Final Words on boosting SC Accuracy:
  1. Formulate an SC strategy. I modified the 2-3 split strategy that i learnt from Mgmat Sc guide to my needs and tested it on Aristotle question bank , tweaked it then used it on all OG problems. This is an crucial step.

  2. GMAT SC does not test you to pick an universally accepted answer. Instead it expects you to choose the best choice from the given answers.

  3. When you formulate a SC Strategy, use it to eliminate the wrong answers based on basic grammar rules and seven commonly tested errors on Gmat Sc ( such as Parallelism , Modifiers, Sub - Verb agreement , Pronoun and Antecedent reference , Verb tense to name a few )

  4. Even though an answer choice sounds awkward / redundant , but grammatically correct and you are able to eliminate all other choice based on grammar errors, Remember it is the correct answer choice. Didn't i mention SC tests you to choose a best option among the given choice but not an universally accepted answer.

  5. If you are left out with two answers during the process of elimination that are both grammatically correct and does not alter the intended meaning ( diction is good too ), Choose the option that is less wordy or more concise. Yes, Gmat checks on the Style ( conciseness , avoiding redundancy ) most of the times.

  6. Finally at the end of your preparation ( after completing practice tests from a prep company and GMAT prep Software ), Use the last week of preparation time to go through the collection of Gmat prep SC and CR questions ( 183 SC , 106 CR problems ) and review your concepts. Make sure it is an less stressed week and gives you enough sleep and rest before the D-Day.

  7. Finally I am planing to pin my own SC guide with help of a Gmat Forum CEO ( Am just too motivated for this and a bit ambiguous i guess πŸ˜‰ ) and perhaps will add the links to access it perhaps in month or two ( if the moderator permits me to reference it )

Hope this debrief shall be helpful in SC preparation and boosting the Gmat verbal score for most of the non native speakers / Indian Students like me. I will take a day or two perhaps to post my complete debrief in the appropriate thread which includes my strategies for all other sections.

Thanks igloo for the wonderful guide(above post).
I would be starting my GMAT prep very soon (done with researching about schools and setting my targets) and would definitely need loads of inputs from champs like yourself.
Any tips other than the above, for a good start?

Hi igloo,

Fantastic score! congratulations mate!

I would like to emphasize on your final note i.e. coming with your own SC guide. I can see that you have done a fair amount of research on the Sentence correction part. May I request you to put your notes which you might have prepared during your prep days. You might have heard about Spidey's notes etc. Can you please put something like that in the coming days? I know that you must be very busy with your applications and other stuff, but please consider this request and devote an hour or two to put those in a word doc or pdf and upload it here.

Thanks.

All the best.

A good SC. I will post the OA after few discussions.

D. movies, a number lower than the people
E. movies, fewer than the ones

I will go with option A for the above SC

Hold you breath! the correct answer is B. Although I posted the correct answer a day after my original post, please see the reasoning as well -

have been killed by the great white shark ............. have been killed by bee stings. -- Parallel.

Hence the correct answer is B. If anyone is confused why option E is incorrect then please continue reading...

Option E is incorrect because it is just the opposite of B i.e. it LACKS PARALLELISM. If you see the two bolded parts you will understand the clear COMPARISION between two part, one before the DASH (which is used to put emphasis and clarity) and one after the DASH.

I hope I am clear.
