E) Nuclear power industry's cost by the end of the decade to meet environmental safety norms is estimated at ten percent of the price per kilowatt-hour(KWH) of energy.

My 2 cents to this discussion......

estimated at is a wrong idiom....
estimated to be is correct..

That leaves us only with A and C as the 2 viable options. I think, A is correct because in C the word "projected" is not conveying the right message. "Projected", in this context requires an infinitive such as "projected to reach" or "projected to grow at", so "projected at" is wrong.

I'll go with option A. Correct me if I am wrong

Let me first tell the answer and also the source so that we can discuss further
Answer is B...and source is scoretop.

I think there are 3 thgs tested in this question: 2 idioms and modifiers

Cost of/to : Both are correct. I read this somewhere.
COST of X(meeting env safety needs)to Y(nuclear power industry)
COST to Y(nuclear power industry) of X(meeting env saftey need).
COST to X(meeting env saftey need) should be wrong.

estimated at/to be : Correct one is estimated to be

This leaves choices B and C. The modifier (by the end of the decade) in C kind of distorts the meaning (removing extra fillings)
By the end of the decade, cost is projected at
Also I think use of "will" in choice B is better becoz we r talking abt soemthg in future...

Pls corrcet me wherever I am wrong becoz its quite possible tht becoz I knw the answer I am kind of biased...
Also is "projected at" a correct idiom

Provide me explanations for the following two also:
1) Native to Shaanxi, the Qinling Panda roams the Qinling Mountains at elevations of 1300-3000 m and they use large molars to crush and grrind fibrous bamboo material, and a large territory is shared with a group of pandas.

@peak, Thankyou for citing the source and providing the explanation. However, I disagree with you

1) The cost that we are talking about is, the cost incurred to meet the environmental safety norms. In its present form, B does not convey this message in a proper manner. A better option should have been," For the nuclear industry, the cost to/for meet/ing environmental safety norms will......

For me, A and B are both one and the same neither of them is good. BTW, what's wrong with A?

:shock:Guys ! How can someone get so creative with SC issues, Does the crazy/unreliable 1000 question set propel you?

Still, just for your info,
Use of whether - whether is to be used when we have 2 or more options. If two opposite options are given then skip the part that starts with or, say:
Whether you help me or not, I will still go ahead with the project.

The underlined part (or not) is redundant and better not choose this option if another option says:
Whether you help me, I will still go ahead with the project.
After all, or not is redundant as the opposite option is understood and redundancy is a secondary error on GMAT-SC.

Use of If- The use of an if needs a conditional situation or a causal situation. Say :
If you help me, then I will take up the project.

The underlined part (then) is redundant and better not choose this option if another option says:
If you help me, I will take up the project.

After all, or not is redundant as the opposite option is understood and redundancy is a secondary error on GMAT-SC.

D)To meet environmental safety norms, the cost to nuclear power industry is estimated at ten percent of the price per kilowatt-hour(KWH) of energy by the end of the decade.
E) Nuclear power industry's cost by the end of the decade to meet environmental safety norms is estimated at ten percent of the price per kilowatt-hour(KWH) of energy.

(A) ..is said to reach...by the end of the decade - doesn't seem right - it should've been 'will reach' or 'may reach' if it has to go with 'by the end of the decade'

(D) 'end of the decade' seems to be modifying price per kwh here.

(E) makes it look like the 'cost of the nuclear power industry'

(B) the cost is being estimated/projected here, so we should have 'cost' after 'it is estimated that the'

So we reach option (C). let me know if you see anything wrong with the reasoning process.

ques 1)
i think option C) provides the best choice

ques 2) the talk is about many successful directors whose first movies dint get appraised. the talk is about comparision so we cn rule out A), B), D). option E) begins with "just" which is not a way to begin sentences. this leaves us with option C)

correct me if im wrong
option E)

Q.1
A - panda is singular and "they" is plural..grammatical mistake..

B - grammatically wrongsince it uses "and" to join two sentences and succeeds it with another "and" (which may be right in certain contexts but not this one ) as well as joins the last half with a comma which should preceed "and" acc. to my understanding...

D - no comma beetween "1300m" and "uses..."

E - verb mistake : roams, using, sharing...all should follow the same tense

hence, answer is C...

Q.2
A,B,C,E - clearly wrong since they all attempt to compare "other directors" with "akira kurosova's first movie" and not "akira kurusova" himself

hence, answer is D...

Thanks all for replying....will post the answers by the end of the day so tht we get more explanations without getting biased...:)

Ajay and all...just a request...I posted one query in CR section also...can someone pls look and reply with explanations....also can someone who has taken GMAT cooment on whether the questions tested in real GMAT are the same cryptic kinds like the ones I have posted recently...e.g the last question that I posted, I feel all 5 of them are odd...how many questions of this type r tested in real GMAT where we r supposed to choose least wrong among all...Also I read somewhere that in real GMAT there are some questions from OG..is it true...

CR query already answered...i dont think so the questions from OG will get repeated in GMAT cuz the governing authority in both cases is same. so they know the questions that they have fired to the test takers...and even if such a case did come up, i think then those sums might be amongst the easy lot which u encounter in the beginning. however, it is an unlikely case...as far as the level of questions goes, i think the ones u posted are of avg difficulty...once u start gettin such questions right, i m afraid the level gets much tougher..however, i screwed up my VA so i cant comment on how difficult the VA section can get but as far as QA goes, solve KAPLAN 800 and u shud just about make it...or if u have above avg solving skills for CAT, then nothing like it atleast for QA!!!
and regarding the no. of questions, u really cant predict but i guess ther's an avg. no. of questions for each type tht i dont remember..browse thru the forum and u will get a fair idea of it

Hi guys
please help me with the following
This is the correct option as per the OA

"The FDA can require that the drug undergo pediatric study. "

But I selected the option which had undergoes since I think drug is a singular noun which will take a singular verb. Please point out where I am going wrong

Rohit

subjunctive case
require that is a subjunctive case so...refer to pg 41 of manhattan SC guide...:)

Source is scoretop and answers given are: E and C. My answers were C and D.
Exp given by scoretop:
1)Choice E clearly subordinates using and sharing to roams. Parallelism isnt the key here.
2)Choice C is concise and grammatically correct, using the comparative preposition, like, to express the comparison between many successful directors and Akira Kurosawa.

Provide me explanations for the following two also:
1) Native to Shaanxi, the Qinling Panda roams the Qinling Mountains at elevations of 1300-3000 m and they use large molars to crush and grrind fibrous bamboo material, and a large territory is shared with a group of pandas.
A)

D)Just as with many successful directors, the first of Akira Kurosova's movies,

The subjunctive mood determines the verb.
but my doubt is the subject verb agreement.

subjunctive case
require that is a subjunctive case so...refer to pg 41 of manhattan SC guide...:)

Hope thsi helps...

Paki n all...I am discussing these 3 questions with more people...once I get real good reasons for all 3...will post and update all...for now I can say that I felt that the question's intent is:
cost by the end of the decade will be equal to ten percent of the price per KWH
n NOT
by the end of the decade, cost is projected (to me it sounds like by the end of the decade they project the cost).
e.g.By the end of the day, I am tired.
Just an attempt to explain what I felt. Will update all if I get better explanations. I am struggling with these kind of questions and after knowing tht these are avg difficulty questions, I am worried...:(
