GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

.Only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the moviesless than those killed by bee stings.

a. moviesless than those
b. moviesfewer than have been

The book also says, that a Dash can be used to restate or explain the earlier part of the sentence, which again does not fit the bill as per me. Can some one help me understand if the part of the sentence after the dash in any ways restates or explains the earlier part?

Only seven people this century have been killed by the great white shark, the man-eater of the moviesless than those killed by bee stings.

Yes I can see how the part after dash is explaining the part before dash. The sentence is saying that only 7 people have been killed by sharks - the sharks that are portrayed in the movies as man-eater. But contrast this with the fact that this number is less than the number of people who are killed by bee stings. The paradox is evident in this sentence. On one hand the sentence states that sharks are man-eater. On the other hand the comparison of number of deaths shows that fewer people were killed by sharks than by bee stings!!

Let me what you think about this explanation...:)

Here is my approach:

Q1. This q. is based on TENSE problem. The non-underlined sentence is in PAST tense (In the mid 16th century ..... arose), so the latter half of the sentence should also be in PAST ... Infact, there are two actions: ENCOURAGEMENT of wine and as a consequence to this, controversy AROSE

A) WERE ENCOURAGING is in past progressive.. so essentially the sentence means that controversy arose simultaneously with encouragement ...

B) HAD ENCOURAGED is past perfect .. I dont think we need to differentiate the actions by using past perfect since the causal relationship is clear .. moreover, the dash also makes the sentence awkward .. (if you read thru couple of last pages, you wl find discussion on usage of dash)

C) ENCOURAGED ... past tense .. structure is fine too ..

D) helped encourage seems redundant ... also 'beverage' is missing

E) same problem as A

Q2. The structure should be: Pressing reasons to call for microeconomics of X rather than Y

A goes with this ... all other sentences depict the second half as consequence ... not sure if that is correct ...
