the OA's are :
1. B
2. B

Well my confusion in the first question is this part of the sentence - a ratio that compares to 42 times in 1980.
The phrase compares to changes the logical meaning of the sentence. Moreover, i think, it is not idiomatic. I chose A which is incorrect.
Can anybody who has chosen B please elaborate.

For the 2nd ques the original source had a typo...so confusion solved now..:D

thanks.

Declining values for farm equipment and land the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season, is going to force many lenders to tighten or deny credit this spring.

(A) the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season is
(B) which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season is
(C) the collateral which is borrowed against by farmers to get through the harvest season is
(D) Which farmers use as collateral to borrow against to get through the harvest season are
(E) the collateral against which farmers borrow to get through the harvest season are

Option E
'Values' is plural, so correct verb 'are' to be used along with it. Narrows it down to D or E.
Although i think both 'which' and 'the collateral' can be used as modifiers for 'farm equipment and land', D is more wordy and should be neglected.

The period when the great painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira were occupied by Upper Paleolithic people has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are the reason for their decoration ,the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals.

(D) have been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are
(E) are established by carbon-14 dating, but that which is much more difficult to determine is

Option B
'Period' and 'reason' are singular, and need correct verbs 'has' and 'is' respectively.

In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding,in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.
(A) in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
(B) in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
(C) partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
(D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
(E) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

Option E
Parrallel construction. So we must use 'partly'.
C) is wrong for many apparent reasons. One of which is the wrong usage of 'acquiring'.
D) I think 'should' must be avoided. 'Should' brings in a tone of suggestion, while, over here, to have the steers acquire certain characteristics is the very purpose of the cattle breeders.
E is most lucid.

(D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers

Option E.

Any clue why is the answer B here, its OG question 28.

Building on civilizations that preceded them in coastal
Peru, the Mochica developed their own elaborate
society, based on cultivating such crops like corn

(E) and they based it on their cultivating such crops

Yes, actually i am confused with the structure to be used in parallelism :: going by the options...A or B seems the probable answers, but should the words be in sync like (cultivating, harvesting and exploiting) rather than option B. Also, when do i use "like" and when do i use "as" ?

You can eliminate options a and c straightway because of the usage of like to specify examples. Always use the expression "such as" to take examples.

Also, even if option a replaced "like" with "such as", it would still be wrong. The reason: The three components cultivating, THE harvesting and exploitating are not parallel. They are not parallel because THE HARVESTING is a noun with an "ing" (Also called as GERUND) which does not go in parallel with the other.

The right answer is b, as it uses nouns for all three and uses "such as" for taking the example.

Please let me know if that helps clarify your doubt

Thanks
Abhishek

Thank you so much

Hi Prakhar

Please ignore the above quoted comment as I have got some mixed feeling about the gerund part all of a sudden. However, you can still eliminate 'A' using the 'like' approach.

Apologies for misleading.

2.> Ted and I are going to the market.

A simple way to resolve such problems is to flip it.

now think, which one is correct:

I and Ted are going.
I and Ted am going.

Is "majority" a singular/plural? I know its both, depending on the context. Can someone please explain the context.
