If you use B,then it would mean that-The student movement of US that occured in 1960s also took place in other countries. But that cannot be possible. How can the same student movement of US take place in other countries also???Hence we cannot use B.

Which option would be better?

The first option...
The mainland was visited by explorers much later than the outlying islands.
We dont need a "were" here just as we dont need a "was in the below sentence:
Telephone was invented by man much later than the Wheel.

Hi,
Recently i came across a Q where data word was classified as plural

"either you transfer the data which WERE demanded or (do xyx)"
shouldn't it be data which WAS demanded?

dictionary definition appears to be a little ambiguous

Data is actually a plural form of datum.
But it can be used both as a plural noun and a singular noun.

Yes 'its' refers to the 'student movement' here.

second part.
because 'the first part if used would mean its comparison with the explorers whereas we want to put the islands as a thing not as a person to be compared with the explorers.

1. indicates should be followed by that
In option A , the CEO's pay is compared to blue collar workers, this is incorrect.
So we narrow down to choices B and C. Further C is the correct one "as compared to...."

2.The word which here will incorrectly refer to the Presidential Campaign.
A greater proportion is correct construction. Further the word previous in option A means something that was, so no need of "than it was"
B is correct here.

1. Contrary to earlier conjectures, it may be that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning fossil fuels would cool the globe by reducing the amount of solar energy absorbed by snow.
(A) increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning
(B) increased atmospheric carbon dioxide resulting from the combustion of
(C) increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulting from the combustion of
(D) carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that increase from burning
(E) atmospheric carbon dioxide that increased from burning

Is it B ???

A -> the causal relationship between burning of fossil fuels and increase of CO2 is not clear .... burning fossil fuels misses the preposition 'of' .. burning should act as an action noun here (burning of ) and not as a verb ...

B -> The causal relationship is crystal .. resulting modifies CO2..

C -> resulting seems to modify atmosphere

D -> again that refers to atmosphere .. awkward construction

E -> though here that refers to CO2, the meaning of the sentence is somewhat vague ... the original sentence says that CO2 increased because of burning of fossil fuels and this increase would cool the globe .. E here says that only the increased CO2 would cool the globe ...

Cheers!
