question 2 The new contract forbids a strike by the transportation union. a)... b)forbids the transportation union from striking c)forbids that there be a strike by the transportation union d)will forbid the transportation union from striking e)will forbid that the transportation union strikes question 6 Like Haydn, Schubert wrote a great deal for the stage, but he is remembered principally for his chamber and concert-hall music. a).. b)Like Haydn, Schubert also c)As has Haydn, Schubert d)As did Haydn, Schubert also e)As Haydn did, Schubert also
Pls explain the reasoning
Q2. Since we are stating a fact/truth, use of will is incorrect. Simple present is the right choice. Thus d and e are ruled out. c is wordy. b uses the adjective "striking" (like striking workers) whereas a verb is required here. This leaves us with option A.
Q6. Can anyone explain why B is incorrect. I had marked B. Is 'also' redundant in B? Why?
question 6 Like Haydn, Schubert wrote a great deal for the stage, but he is remembered principally for his chamber and concert-hall music. a).. b)Like Haydn, Schubert also c)As has Haydn, Schubert d)As did Haydn, Schubert also e)As Haydn did, Schubert also 6) a e
Option E can be eliminated as it compares the work of a person with a person, it is inconsistent. C can also be eliminated, "As has Haydn" is inconsistent with "wrote a great deal" (tenses dont match). So we are left with A, B and D. The use of "also" is incorrect in B and D. "Also" means "in addition" - "He was thin, and he was also tall." or "likewise" - "Since you're having another cup of coffee, I'll have one also." So, here the "also" would mean "like" but the sentence already has "like" or "As did". So, we can eliminate B and D.
i didn't understand how 'e' makes it a comparison b/w someone's work and a person. I clicked e because as haydn did means as haydn also wrote a gr8 deal 4 stage. anyway, frm the post,i can eliminate now b,d and e because 'also' means 'in addition' which is totally wrong here so, 'a' shuld be the ideal answer for Q.6 anthr ques (this one was frm spidey's notes) Although about 99 percent of the more than 50 million Turks are Muslims, the republic founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923 is resolutely secular. a... b. Here's the short answer: if we use "the," we are saying that there are only 50 million Turks in the whole world; if we don't use "the," we are saying that there are possibly more than 50 million Turks in the world.
a is the answer I couldn't understand this reasoning at all the discussion shuld be whether the pop. is more than 50mil. but acc. to the reasoning, 'the' makes it exactly 50 mil.
this explanation winds me up i feel 'c' is much better

???
IMO, C can definitely not be the answer. Try replacing "more than 50 million Turks" by people - Although about 99% of people are Muslims..., this seems awkward. Try putting "the" now... Although about 99% of the people are Muslims....., which sounds better.
Can someone give a correct sentence construction using "over"? Is this correct...Although about 99% of over 50 million Turks...?
Pls provide your answers with explanations for the following: In ancient times, Nubia was the principal corridor where there were cultural influences transmitted between Black Africa and the Mediterranean basin. (A) where there were cultural influences transmitted (B) through which cultural influences were transmitted (C) where there was a transmission of cultural influences (D) for the transmitting of cultural influences (E) which was transmitting cultural influences
B. Nubia was a medium for the exchange of cultural influences. Where always refers to a place, the use of where is incorrect here, which rules out A nd C. The -ing form in D and E is incorrect, very awkward. B makes the meaning clear and has a correct tense (note ancient times).
Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bla Bartk and Zoltn Kodly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only with an Edison phonograph and insatiable curiosity. (A) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only (B) In 1905, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, traveling the back roads of Hungary, began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were only armed (C) In 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only (D) Having traveled the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology; they were only armed (E) Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, in 1905 began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary, arming themselves only
C. the sentence should end with "armed ony with" and not "only amed with"..leving us with options A and C. I would go for C which makes the meaning of the sentence more clear. Sorry could not give a better explanation.
The commission acknowledged that no amount of money or staff members can ensure the safety of people who live in the vicinity of a nuclear plant, but it approved the installation because it believed that all reasonable precautions had been taken. (A) no amount of money or staff members (B) neither vast amounts of money nor staff members (C) neither vast amounts of money nor numbers of staff members (D) neither vast amounts of money nor a large staff (E) no matter how large the staff or how vast the amount of money
D. Neither nor is preferable. In A, no amount of money can be correct but "no amount" does not go well with the staff members. The sentence emphasizes on the "bigness" of money and staff members, which is not taken care of in B. D makes this emphasis and also replaces staff members by staff makig the sentence terse.
. Although films about the American West depict coyotes as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills, in reality these gregarious creatures live in stable groups that occupy the same territory for long periods. (A) films about the American West depict coyotes as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills (B) in films about the American West coyotes are depicted to be solitary animals that howl mournfully on the tops of distant hills (C) coyotes are depicted as solitary animals howling mournfully on the tops of distant hills in films about the American West (D) films about the American West depict coyotes as if they were solitary, mournfully howling animals on the tops of distant hills. (E) films about the American West depict coyotes to be solitary and mournfully howling animals on the tops of distant hills
C. Confusion between B and C. The sentence talks about coyotes and coyotes should be the sbject. The original sentence has more emphasis on the films which seems wrong. By similar logic, D and E are also out. "depicted to be" in B seems awkward to me, I would go with C.
. Few people realize that the chance of accidental injury or death may be as great or greater in the safety of their own homes than in a plane or on the road. (A) may be as great or greater in the safety of their own homes than (B) is at least as great or greater in the safety of their own homes than (C) might be so great or greater in the safety of their own home as (D) may be at least as great in the safety of their own homes as (E) can be at least so great in the safety of their own home as
D. as great or greater can be worded in a better way using at least which leaves us with B, D and E. At least as great or greater is incorrect in B, also is the worng use of than. 'At least so great" in D is again awkward.
. At the time of the Mexican agrarian revolution, the most radical faction, that of Zapata and his followers, proposed a return to communal ownership of land, to what had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards. (A) land, to what had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards (B) land, a form of ownership of the pre-Columbians and respected by the Spaniards (C) land, respected by the Spaniards and a pre-Columbian form of ownership (D) land in which a pre-Columbian form of ownership was respected by the Spaniards (E) land that had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards

Is the answer B... A)"to what had been" sounds like replacing communal ownership of land with pre-columbian for of ownership... B)Correct acc to me... C)shows land respected by spaniards rather than ownership of land... D)again land is modified here... E)again land is modified here...
B - "Pre-Columbians" refers to a time frame in the correct context. However in B, it is referring to people. Further the sentence is not built correctly.
C - Again, this choice skews the meaning of the sentence.

The answer is A

i think OG is right...consider it this way : Paleontologists believe that fragments (of a primate jawbone) unearthed in Burma and estimated...
because of.... is the part tht gives us more info about fragments...it is not the principal subject...pardon me for not being able to explain it techincally..i hope u got my point
I agree with you in that the OG is not good at explaining SC.
In my opinion, what the paleontologist believe is the direct object, and after the word that, there is a relative clause with and that requires paralelism. Also there is a prepositional prhase (fragments + OF , estimated + to).
A) is wrong because the meaning of the original sentence can not say estimated at. It lacks something. B) is wrong because does not respect the subject verb agreement. C) is wrong because believe that + prhase, so estimated + phrase rather than put a CLause (estimated that it is). Also subject verb ag. D) is correct in my opinion E) is wrong because does not respect subject verb agreement.
But you could have saved all this if you knew that there is an IDIOM: ESTIMATED + TO
Yes. I realized that a bit later. But was doubtful about the explanation given in OG.

hi, Can anyone plz tell me how useful is it to do 1000SC , 1000CR for GMAT? are the questions in these similar to GMAT qs types? or one should mainly focus on OG

Cant comment much on the OG explanation coz i havent started it as yet.
But, finding the subject is very important in the SC. Try the Kaplan Premium Book.
And for the subject of a sentence look for what the sentence is talking about, the subject need not be the noun before verb.
The subject can be a noun or a collection of the words with atleast one noun. Take this sentence for instance it is talking about "fragments of a primate jawbone". It is not taking about the primate or jawbone or a primate's jawbone. And if you remove the "fragments" from the sentence, the sentence would lose its meaning. Hence, it the subject is plural.
Always ask yourself "Who" or "What" the sentence is talking about. Hope it helps.
