D. would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic
E. would have to knwo a great deal more than now about the social and economical

My answers:
1. A
B, C, D and E, all have awkward sentence construction.
" a ratio that compares to.."in B
"..as compared to 42 times their pay, the ratio" in C and D
CEOs now earning an average of 419.. in E

2. D
Growing up to..is incorrect in B and C.Use of which is preferable instead of the -ing form.
A should be --which can grow to 30 feet long...the use of "be" is incorrect. Similarly, E is also out.

3. E
The underlined portion modifies "spending in presidential campaign..", so a greater proportion is incorrect in A, B and C. Use of preesent perfect in E is better than "than was so" in D.

4. B
Either should be follwed by OR..so A, C and E are out.
Here again, -ing construction in D is incorrect and use of which is more appropriate.

5. D
"would have to" sounds more accurate to me leaving choices C, D and E to choose from. Now social and economic is more logical, economical means thrifty..which is not related to economy...economic is a better choice to go well with social, so D.

My Answers:-

Guys, first one is driving me crazy....I have confusion between A and B. C,D are definitely out as "their" can refer to either CEOs or workers. E also has a weird sentence construction...
Is "a ratio that compares to.." a correct construction?

For Q.2, I gave D as the answer but D is definitely wordy... as big as 30 feet long..should be as long as 30 feet...

For Q.3, one thing is sure that present perfect has to be used, so it has to be C or E. Can anyone explain why it should be C?

Q3:
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.
A.
B. a greater proportion than
C. a greater proprtion than they have been
D. which is greater than was so
E. which is greater than it has been

I guess answer to question 3 is C .... because the subject here is plural that is 'television costs' ...so we should use 'than they have ' rather than 'than it has' ....

Further more ..

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election.

use of 'accounted' makes it an event of the past and therefore a much better answer should be with past perfect i.e.

Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992,a greater proprtion than they had been in any previous election.

Q2:
The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.
A.
B. include the animal known as the killer whale, gowing as big as 30 feet long and
C. include the animal known as the killer whale, gowing up to 30 feet long and being
D. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow as big as 30 feet long and is
E. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and it is

b and c are wrong because if we remove ' which can ' from the sentence than it brings ambiguity that whether dolphin family can grow ao the killer whale
d is also wrong becuase use of grow as big as 30 feel long chnages the meaning of sentence
e is also wrong because it is using two it .... 'and it is famous for its aggressive hunting pods'

Therfore i guess answer a is right

Hi Guys

Having lost his sight to sustained eyestrain, John Milton nevertheless composed Paradise Lost, considered by many to be the greatest English epic.

A. Having lost his sight to sustained eyestrain
B. With his sight lost to sustained eyestrain
C. Blinded by sustained eyestrain
D. Having been blinded by excessive eyestrain
E. Blinded with sustained eyestrain.

In this question, I assumed the meaning of "Blinded by" and "Blinded with" in C and E to take on the meaning "to not be able to see because of something, though his eyesight is fine" as in the example, "Blinded by his wealth, he committed the murder" where they arent talking about the eyes not being able to see but it is used in a different context.. With this line of reasoning I rejected choices C and E. However, the correct answer turned out to be C.

While I agree with the answer, I just feel that C causes some ambiguity and given that none of the other sentences are grammatically incorrect, A would be the best choice due to brevity.

Ur opinions on this????

Reply :

Having lost his sight to sustained eyestrain,

Having lost his sight can be easily replaced with Blinded ...
so my choices reduces to
Blinded to sustained eyestrain
Blinded with sustained eyestrain
Blinded by sustained eyestrain

Now according to your reasoning that is
" In this question, I assumed the meaning of "Blinded by" and "Blinded with" in C and E to take on the meaning "to not be able to see because of something, though his eyesight is fine" as in the example, "Blinded by his wealth, he committed the murder" where they arent talking about the eyes not being able to see but it is used in a different context.. With this line of reasoning I rejected choices C and E." is wrong because the word blinded is not used in idiomatic sense but scientific sense that a person is blind ..

take this as example

Blinded to cataract
Blinded with cataract
Blinded by cataract

so the third option seems right and therefore answer C is right i.e., Blinded by sustained eyestrain
Could some one explain this sentence to me:-

Incorrect: It is essential that you are on time.
Correct : It is essential that you be on time.

I think the first sentence is wrong because it does not have a verb . It just says that 'you are on time' ...some thing like 'you are GOD' ... a better sentence may be 'It is essential that you are present on time'.

The second sentence is right because it contains the verb ...in this case 'to be'

Q3:

A.
B. a greater proportion than
C. a greater proprtion than they have been
D. which is greater than was so
E. which is greater than it has been

Just check the sentence if the answer is B ->
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than in any previous election.

In This case the modifier a greater proportion than in any previous election actually modifies presidential campaign of 1992 because it does not have a it which refers to subject ie televison costs.

Q. Legend has it that when the Mohawk Joseph Brant was presented to George III in 1776, he proudly refused to kiss the Kings hand, inasmuch as he regarded himself an ally, not a subject.
(A) as he regarded himself an ally, not
(B) that he regarded himself to be an ally rather than
(C) as he considered himself an ally, not
(D) that he considered himself to be ally instead of
(E) as he considered himself as an ally rather than

Why the answer is C and not E?

Why the answer is C and not E?

Here I quote Kaplan..
'Considered as' is always wrong. 'Considered to be' is considered correct by most grammarians, it is considered wordy by GMAT.

Hence not E.
Q. Legend has it that when the Mohawk Joseph Brant was presented to George III in 1776, he proudly refused to kiss the Kings hand, inasmuch as he regarded himself an ally, not a subject.

Why the answer is C and not E?

You can narrow down the options by using "in as much" will be followed by "as" so that leaves us with option A, C and E.

The idiomatic usage for "regard" is "I regard him as a fool", i.e., one regards a person as something. So the correct usage here would be "consider" and not "regard" . Furthermore, "rather than" and "instead of" imply "in place of" or "preference".

So option C is correct.
