GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

C fits in, although I am not very sure about 'of'.
Perhaps if it was - in its return in 1910..

i too feel the same about 'of'. otherwise the answer is correct.
please help with this query

In no other historical sighting did Halleys Comet
cause such a worldwide sensation as did its return in
19101911.

(A) did its return in 19101911
(B) had its 19101911 return
(C) in its return of 19101911
(D) its return of 19101911 did
(E) its return in 19101911

Its C.
But I found this query by a student unanswered on another forum.
I thought this will be food for thought.

The correct option C says : in its return OF 1910-1911.

Now isnt this wrong coz it gives a very confusing meaning that the comet (somehow) returned the year 1910-11 !!?!?

So IMO , the correct ans actually should be: in its return IN 1910-1911
Could this be a typo in OG ?!?!

Why i say this, is because, if one looks in the answer's explanation in OG:
Quote:
The single subject of this sentence is Halleys Comet, and its single verb phrase is did cause. The comparison presented by the sentence is between adverbial phrases describing times when the comet was seen. Grammatically, the items being compared are parallel prepositional phrases beginning with the preposition in: in no other sighting and in its return in 19101911. This is the clearest, most economical way of presenting the information. The options that introduce a second verb (did or had) violate the parallelism and introduce a comparison between the comet itself (subject of the verb did cause) and the comets return (subject of the verb did or had).

It means that they actually wanted to say that the best option is IN and not OF 1910-11.

Gail,
Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as fireships, vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet.

1. Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing

Stymieing the Armadas ...is a modifier.Whats preventing the Aramadas plan ? .It can't be the reason it should be "the defeat of Spanish" .

2. The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing
[ parallelism error in the second half]

3. The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also due to the sacrificing
[ parallelism errror in the second half ]

4. Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrifice
[placement of modifer ]

5. Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the defeat of the Spanish Armada was due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice

[ parallel construction is proper .to gale winds ...& to the sacrifice & placement of modifier ].

Gail ,
For the columbus q,
Placement of not only should be after Columbus. So we are left with two options 3 & 4.
In 3,not only x but y.After but there is pronoun he which isn't required & and is not required after Asia since its a modifier.

Btw the questions are interesting !

i will go with option 5 as it eliminates the modifier error and maintains parallelism.

Whats the OA ?

Not only but also is the right phrase, but absence of 'also' does not alter meaning majorly. Same does not hold for 'but', it should always appear.
If option A had but he also, it would have been correct as well.

The Armada question - that is a good one.
We need the reason for teh defeat, and there are two of them - 1. Gale winds and 2. Sacrificing teh warships.
For these not only but also questions, subsitute and see if it makes sense.

i.e. option A - reason for defeat was (not only) due to gale winds
reason for defeat was (but also) the sacrificing..
IF you take out the bracketed part, then second setnece does not make sense.

Option 5 -
Reason for defeat was due (not only) to gale winds
Reason for defeat was due (but also) to sacrificing of.. this fits.

option 3 is also correct, but misses due to usage of which.

Harry,
2 is mostly wrong because:
2. The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing

'which' is a possessive. This nonsensically suggest the "Spanish Armada stymied the Armada's plan".

5th is the only option that expresses the meaning as "the defeat of the Spanish Armada....stymied the Armada's plan"
"Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands" is a modifier, and should be followed immediately by the Subject it modifies. In this case the correct subject is "The defeat of the Spanish Armada" BTW, the meaning of "Stymie" is to Thwart or stump.
stymieing - definition of stymieing by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.
Who stumped the plan: "the reason for the defeat" as suggested by options 1 & 4 is incorrect. 2 & 3 are incorrect for the reason I mentioned earlier. So we are left with 5 which is correct for the reason mentioned.

You are correct Deepu.
The correct construction is :
"A not only did X, But did Y"(OPTION 4) AND NOT "A not only did X, But he did Y"(Option 3)
What I am saying is We need "also" here to complete the meaningful phrase.
Which makes it : "A not only did X, But also did Y"...But in this case "Not only...But also" is in none of the choices. This is a question from MGMAT.

I am assuming GMAT will not test on this form of construction, but if it does

we should have this arrow in our "QUIVER"
so that when we see this, we don't SHIVER.....

OMG! I am a poet and I didn't even know it

The ans -5 seems okay except the position of "due to" before "not only"...

A. The defeat of the Spanish Armada

Q. Why were the Spanish Armada Defeated?
A. not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing

I agree that which is a possesive but it does not suggest that the Spanish Armada but it rather answers my first question "The defeat of spanish armada" stymied the plans.

And in Option 5

5. Stymieing the Armadas plans to meet up with the Duke of Parmas army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the defeat of the Spanish Armada was due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice

Hey, Mr. Gail Wynand William Wordsworth,
What I twig from your post is you wanna know why 'not only..but' structure is deemed correct, don't you?
As you know, I don't have any GMAT perspective and can tell only from, what they call, puritan's perspective.

Firstly, you must know why we use 'only' & 'also' in 'not only...but also' structure. They both act as a modifier, or a sentence or a phrase intensifier, to be more accurate.

You'll come across 'not only..but' a very many times. But you will never come across 'not....but also'. This is because we tend to highlight and intensify the first part, and so we use the modifier 'only' with the 'not'.

And we use 'also' depending upon the way we treat the latter half. If we wish to intensify the second part too, we'll use 'also'. But if we wish to let the second part go unmodified, we'll use just 'but'.

You can't let your first part go unmodified ( the 'not only' part) because that will lose the very purpose of conjunctions, and so you ought to use 'only' always. However, you can let your second part go unmodified, depending upon how emphatic your tone is.

In essence, both 'not only...but also' and 'not only...but' are grammatically correct.
I'd be happy even if it helps a trifle!

Peace!

Dont u think the highlighted construction is a bit odd can u quote any other sentence with this type of construction

Here goes the official explanation:

The original has two major problems. "Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands" is incorrectly modifying "the reason" rather than "the defeat." Also, the elements in the idiom "not only X but also Y" must be parallel. The elements in "not only due to gale winds but also the sacrificing" are not parallel.

(A)
The introductory modifier incorrectly modifies "the reason." The elements in "not only due to gale winds but also the sacrificing" are not parallel. Finally, it is redundant to write "the reason for result X was due to Y." You can write "the reason for result X was Y," or you can write "result X was due to Y," but not both.

(B)
The use of a "which" modifier (which must touch the thing that it modifies) implies that the Spanish Armada, not its defeat, stymied plans. The elements in "not only due to gale winds but also the sacrificing" are not parallel.

(C)
The use of a "which" modifier (which must touch the thing that it modifies) implies that the Spanish Armada, not its defeat, stymied plans. The parallelism of "not only due to gale winds but also due to the sacrificing" is improved here, but still wordy due to unnecessary repetition of "due to."

(D)
The introductory modifier incorrectly modifies "the reason."

(E) Correct.
The introductory modifier correctly modifies "the defeat." The elements in "due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice" are parallel. Additionally, "sacrifice" is preferable to "sacrificing," and the placement of "due" BEFORE the not only but also construct prevents the unnecessary repetition of the word.

The correct answer is (E).

5. Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the defeat of the Spanish Armada was due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice

Dont u think the highlighted construction is a bit odd can u quote any other sentence with this type of construction

And to answer your point above, this is how test makers create ambiguity in the choices to make the questions tougher. As Ron from Manhattan says, its not the questions that themselves get tougher, its the options that actually do. However I am still in the learning phase and would agree with you...a BETTER construction is :
"The defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds but also due to the sacrifice"
I am not sure the OG has ever used such a construction. I think we have to leave this question with the statement that, "The subject-modifier error wins over the idiom error".
Kindly resolve the apparent discrepancy between the two SCs....
