GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hey guys,
thanks a lot for the help....
I have couple of questions more to ask....

1. I can see some great grammer rules being discussed here.....can anybody suggest some good notes or book explaining these grammatical rules that can help in gmat.

2. Carpenters, dentists, sewing machine operators, needlepointers, piano players, and indeed anyone who works with their hands for long hours can get carpal tunnel syndrome. (A) anyone who works
(B) anyone working
(C) workers
(D) those for whom work isďźˆE
(E) any people who work

as A,B,C,D does not make sense so E is right answer......But "any people"....how is this right???

I am not sure of any people but E seems to be the right fit. Parrallel structure requires underlined part to be plural and it should be noun.

Carpenters, dentists, sewing machine operators, needlepointers, piano players, and indeed anyone who works with their hands for long hours can get carpal tunnel syndrome..

we can see that their is plural ..and anyone would require singular pronoun(his/her) ...whereas in any people any is working as an adjective modifying people...and plural people complements their ...i think this should explain OA...tc

I am just rephrasing just what everyone else has said:
Carpenters, dentists, sewing machine operators, needlepointers, piano players, and indeed anyone who works(single hence wrong/Parallelism error and also anyone does not agree with their-Subject-verb agreement error) with their hands for long hours can get carpal tunnel syndrome.

  1. We have already proved the choice should be plural A, B are eliminated.
  2. Let try choice C. "indeed workers with their hands for long hours" - doesn't make any sense. Eliminated.
  3. "indeed those for whom work is with their hands for long hours" - Senseless/Unidiomatic/Ungrammatical; you name it.
  4. "indeed any people who work with their hands for long hours" - this choice is plural and moreover "any people who work with their hands" is a meaningful sentence construction. Correct. Might not be the best in world but we have to go with the best of the available choices.
Thanks Akhil. Perhaps I should have been more clear. I was more interested in GMAT's perspective, rather than puritan's perspective.

Essentially I wanted to know if you have come across any example in an authentic GMAT source (GMAT OGs, both old and new, GMAT Prep exams or other old GMAT Tests etc.) that has an answer choice where which used as a restrictive clause is the right answer.

As far as I know, GMAT treats this as controvertial and hence stays clear from using 'which' in restrictive sense.

Hy Ashish,
I'm doing actuaries, and not preparing for any GMAT. So I can only give the 'puritan's perspective' about the difference between the two. Pardon me if I delivered any misinformation.

Peace!

Sorry for this off-topic post. Couldn't stop myself from remarking that this website/homepage is the most awful I have ever seen:

Yeah, that's right.
I told them not to give their site maintenance job to someone like you.

By the way, had you known actuary has consistently been rated as No.1 or No.2 job in Wall Street Journal for last 4 years, you wouldn't have gone that 'off-topic'. Plus, I don't think a portal needs to have a gimmicky look in order to allure people, like yourself, but should rather be informative so that aspirants like us can make the most out of it.

Peace!

Hi Akhil, since you are not yourself appearing in GMAT, you are clearly here to help out others. Nevertheless, the bottomline really is that this is a GMAT forum and so, no advice offered here can be inward looking or self-gratifying; it has to be GMAT focused. Hope you appreciate.

Hy Ashish,
I sure do. Thanks for bringing up this point.

Darn! First time I kid around and get a dressing down for it !!

Akhil - just clarifying. Absolutely no offense meant to your profession. I just thought the website was funny so shared the link. Let us not get into a flame game

Arun

PS: Factually however you are wrong. Please check Actuary Salary Data - Average Actuary Salaries - PayScale
It is NOT the #1 or #2 job in any list.

Better check some authentic source, say, for example, WALL STREET JOURNAL:
The Best and Worst Jobs in the U.S. - WSJ.com

And I don't think discussing the Actuarial career in this forum makes any sense.
My case rests.
You may carry on, if u wish.

Peace!

Well...well...This was bad.
Here is the explanation(from some other forum) you asked for:
where can be used in the sense of whereas, as can while. However, if you have to choose between while and whereas, you should go with whereas (or where in this case) if while can be ambiguous in the sentence, since it can mean whereas or at the same time that.

Here's an example of a sentence in which while can have an ambiguous meaning:

Diana prefers to eat at McDonald's while Tomo eats at Burger King.

If while means although here, then we have the simple meaning of contrast--one prefers X, but the other prefers Y.

If while means at the same time that here, then we have a somewhat strange sentence that says that Diana enjoys eating at McD's when Tomo goes to Burger King. In other words, something like Diana will enjoy it only when Tomo is doing something else, kind of an illogical sentence.

I screwed up big time on (2). So ignore my answer please.
This is question on parallelism. Only C is parallel.
(A) Water and resource management problems - X and Y..this is a list and X, Y should be parallel. But Water is not parallel to resource management problems; This is out.
(B) and -
Not parallel
(C) Problems in the management of water and other resources - Read Problems in the management of X(water ) and Y(other resources) - Parallel form
(D) and - Not parallel
(E) Resource management problems, including water - Problems can not include water. Eliminated
