Options A & D are extremely close... I selected A because i thought we can use due to only if it can be replaced by caused by
Apparently, there is one more rule.. i found this explanation in the MGMT forum..
Due to Vs. Because of
due to = as a result of because of = on account of
"Due to" functions as an adjectival phrase and is used to modify a noun (e.g., His failure was due to his laziness). "Because of" functions as an adverbial phrase and is used to modify a verb or verb phrase (e.g., He failed because of his laziness). "Due to" is a phrase that must describe a noun. "The fire was due to drought" is correct, but "There was a fire due to drought" is not. When describing a verb phrase, "because of" is preferable: "There was a fire because of drought."
As per this rule, we have to use "due to" because it modifies "raised"
Therefore, the I think the answer is D.
Yes the correct answer is option D but I don't have any sort of explanation right now and I am still confused between them. π THanks for your explanation anyways. I will keep the rule in my mind.
nice question and a good doubt. first we need present perfect tense for parallelism so have been is required. that rules out B,C, E. now between A and D, here is the diff. If you can answer the question with "why" then because of is perfect choice. Why analysts have been predicting? because of the economy. Because of modifies verb, while due to modifies "the economy`s strength" So because of is a better choice (A). And one more thing, most of the wrong choices in GMAT have more than one error, try finding other when confused. see the will in choice A, analysts are predicting, so it needs to be in future tense because its a future. "would" is the best choice but since none of the choices has "would" go for A.
wowowo edit edit: I cant believe it. i googled this sentence and found this in one of the NY times post: Data Raise New Fears Of Inflation - NYTimes.com go to para 10 on that post.... "Because of the economy's continued strength, analysts have been predicting for weeks that the Fed would raise its short-term interest rate target again in November". GMAT writers dnt change the month even...
Thanks for the link.... But still in the current situation we can ask the required question in two formats.
1. Why were the analysts predicting ,.... THis leads to use because of 2. THe basis for the analysts' prediction was....this leads to due to.

1. D We have to use "as" and not "like". That rules out B&E.; Options A&C; have comparison errors. You have to compare apples to apples. In this question, we have to compare Turkey with France.

For the fire ant question, I think the answer should be D. As "them" (in C) is not making clear that what it is representing. Also everywhere in sentence "ant" is used as singular.

My take :
1. C ( since disapproves is reqd here, only option B and C remain, and i would eliminate B because as well if not better does not make any sense, i.e. i have not heard of such an idiom. as well as if not better sounds much better and is a known idiom.
2. D ( since it is a comparison, as is required here, so it leaves out only option D and E, I would reject option E on the sole parameter that there has to be some word after the as they would , moreover , parents discipline male children as they discipline daughters introduces parallelism also . Hence i'd go for D

A,B,D has idiom error. correct idiom is consider X Y. now we have C and E. C is passive and ambigious pronoun it. E remains....{edited Oops i skipped modifier... it should be C.}
