C) who, having no formal medical training, he struggled against overwhelming odds in becoming
D) who, having had no formal medical training and struggled against overwhelming odds, became
E) who had no formal medical training, struggled against overwhelming odds to become

IMO E .
A). prepositional phrase beginning with "in struggling" in second clause is modifying "medical training" instead of subject "Vivien Thomas" making the whole sentence awkward. Hence rejected.
B). Usage of participle "having" is wrong to modify subject also the prepositional phrase in second clause causing the same problem as in A. Hence rejected.
C). Tense problem, unparallel.
D). Tense problem, unparallel.

B). "an extraction rate" is clearly defining the rate mentioned in the first clause and overall the sentence conveys a clear meaning.
C). become awkward in the last part of the sentence.
D)participle "allowing " is modifying "The yield of natural gas" which changes the meaning of the sentence.
E). same as A

1. (d) I think options A and D, both are correct but A is wordy compared to D.

2. (A) is incorrect because after and 'it' refers to the painting and the line " and it was the second highest price ever paid for a painting at auction." means that the painting was the second highest price which is not possible.:nono:

(B) incorrect because "Rhone, which sold for $20.2 million," is not grammatical. It should be which was sold for or was sold for but still the second was in the last phrase spoils the meaning again.

(C) this is correct. "Rhone, was sold for $20.2 million, the second highest price ever paid for a painting at auction." The last phrase here correctly describes the price of the auctioned painting.

(D) Incorrect. OK, Just what I have observed. BEING is always almost incorrect in GMAT exam.

(E) Incorrect: Again the same problem as with option A.

IMO B the design of the ship was determined by what??a situation where the need of the quick move aroused, since it is a restrictive clause use of conjunction that is must..

Whats the correct answer??

The correct answer is (B).

As per the solution, 'to carry' is being used as a verb and 'determining' as a participle in the original sentence and the participle makes the final phrase determining the design of the clipper ship of the sentence a modifier. How is this a participle? What is this phrase modifying?

This question is about "If .......Then" conditional clause. For solving this type of question keep one thing in one mind :
If "if" clause is in past tense then "then" clause should be of the form "would /could + base verb". Therefore A and B are rejected.

C is rejected as it has used singular "it" which cannot refer back to plural "tides".

Between D and E, the better choice will be the one which is logically correct.
D interprets tides in 1950 were diffrent form the one after 20 years which is logically wrong.
Therefore appropriate choice would be E
