Hi All, Note: I had posted a similar question earlier. Please note however that the questions in this attachment are different from the earlier ones. Attached are some of the questions from GMATPrep that I got wrong. The options marked with the bold black dot in the attachment are mine and are the wrong answers. The options marked by a square blue frame are correct as these are the correct answers marked by the software. However the software does not explain why a particular choice is correct and others are wrong. I will be very grateful if some of you can help justify why the correct choice is actually correct! Many thanks. - TheToastedBread

There seems to be some confusion wrt your 1st question. Post 628, page 63 on this thread says official answer to be E while you have official ans as D.
I would go with option D as "they are scheduled.." in E seems incorrect to me. A person can schedule sth but a person cannot be scheduled....a meeting, a day, etc can be scheduled.
Hi All, Thanks for your responses so far. Here attached are a new set of SC problems from the official GMATPrep that I got wrong. As before, the options marked with the bold black dot in the attachment are mine and are the wrong answers. The options marked by a square blue frame are correct as these are the correct answers marked by the software. However the software does not explain why a particular choice is correct and others are wrong. I will be very grateful if some of you can help justify why the correct choice is actually correct!
Can smbdy..pls provide me a step by step procedure...for VA preparation..? Like which books/material to refer first ,which topics should be picked up first/last or any related or additional info.? pls enlighten π

1. u r comparing middleweight black holes first to lightweight ones and later to heavyweight ones...so the flow of sentence/tense should be the same.... it is given as "middleweight black hole....., hundreds of times more massive than..." so the correct end to this part wud be "but thousands of times less massive than..." hence, answer is C.
2.
i feel that since the sentence consists of two parts, both the parts should be in the same continuity of tense...i mean, if the first part is in continuous tense, then the second part should also be in continuous tense...following this rule, only option D remains..moreover, i dont know the technical term, but as a rule, since the sentence starts with "while...", i feel it should begin with "there are...", atleast in this context..
3. it is the scientists who are "suggesting" something, not the evidence, so u can eliminate options A,B,C on this basis...amongst D and E, E is the better choice because of presence of 'that' in the latter half of sentence..
4. incorrect use of idiom...."as it is" exhibits a different meaning while the sentence tries to convey that online stores are facing a similar situation that the traditional stores currently face..so the correct idiom is "as is the case"...hence, option C.
Manhattan SC: Sub-Verb Agreement problem set A majority of railway commuters reads or listens to music while traveling Can someone pls explain why this one is correct. Why plural verb is not required here.
Also wanna know what is the form of verb to be used for hopes, proposal, desires and requests in subjunctive mood(the ones which use that)
the use of 'they' is ambiguous only if u consider the parts individually...try to read the sentence as 'the journalists view the power stations to be unsafe but they think that THEY COULD BE MADE SAFE in the future..see, in the first half of the sentence, power stations are referred to as unsafe, not journalists..so in the latter half, when we say BUT they can be made SAFE, we are referring to the power stations themselves and not the journos..hope u got it...neways, if its still nt clear, the option can be confirmed based on the use of 'will' itself..
I guess the better explanation is "that" is required after think. Had the option E been like this "think that the power stations would or could" it would have been the best answer. Moreover in "D" - will be and could be are not parallel.

@peak,
1)The reason why it requires singular verb is because of 'a majority of'
'majority' here refers to 'a chunk' or 'an amount', it doesn't convey 'a number'
For ex:-
'Maximum number of students ARE weak in mathematics' 'Majority of the students is weak in mathematics'
2) I didn't understand your second question pls elaborate:(

Thnks for answering my query....but I think in the example tht u have quoted it shld take plural verb....becoz Manhattan SC gives two examples to explain the use of numerical words... Examples form Manhattan SC: The majority of the students in the class are hard workers. The student majority is opposed to the death penalty.
I would request further explanations from u all. Besides I wanted some examples of subjunctive mood.

Concur...
I even agree with Manhattan SC that "if one means the many individual parts of the total" the verb form would be plural" but.......
If "Majority of the students" takes plural form, then even "majority of the commuters"(your original query)should take a plural form. And in both the cases 'majority' refers to individual parts......Right!

i like to point one more thing which we are neglecting
the majority of the students.....................according to manhattan take plural verb a majority of the students........i supposs a majority means a chunk of the students ..singular verb. majority of the students....................what about this case

Yes, I think you are right!
I think we also have overlooked an advice or a hint from Manhattan which says " When in doubt think singular".
I believe in majority of the cases "majority" is accompanied by "a" or "the", but if encountered with a situation wherein I have to choose the verb for "majority" without "a" or "the" I would go with a singular verb
Hey, you seem to be around for quite sometime now. When is ur GMAT?
Is it that you are going through the same phase that I am in- I always belive in loads and loads of preparation. No matter howmuch ever I study I feel the preparation is inadequate and this coupled with the option of writing the exam at your date of convenience is killing me!
Hope I would get over with it and go in for the final kill

Was browsing the internet and found this, am afraid I won't be able to tell you what the OA is as I couldn't find it All-terrain vehicles have allowed vacationers to reach many previously inaccessible areas, but they have also been blamed for causing hundreds of deaths, injury to thousands, and seriously damaging the nations recreational areas. (A) deaths, injury to thousands, and seriously damaging (B) deaths and injuring thousands, and serious damage to (C) deaths, thousands who are injured, as well as seriously damaging (D) deaths and thousands of injuries, as well as doing serious damage to (E) deaths, thousands are injured, and they do serious damage to I think the answer is A. What say? cheers unplugged

no, the answer is D. cuz the three parts - deaths, injuries, damage should follow the same tone/tense which is maintained only in D... or in other words, u can split up the three parts and each part should fit wholly with the first half of the sentence.. ....they have also been blamed for causing hundreds of deaths.... ....they have also been blamed for causing thousands of injuries.... ....they have also been blamed for doing serious damage to....
