OA is A... can some1 explain y... im still confused between A&C;

"again" is the adverb which is modifying the verb "venture" and hence should be placed near to it or should precede it which is the case in A.
In C adverb "again" is modifying the planet "Mars" which is wrong. Also "now known as being" is an awkward phrase.

OA is D... can someone explain please... confused b/w D&E;

Usage of infinitive "to grant" is appropriate after authority so the choices are restricted to D and E. Now E can be eliminated as "would be called by the name of" is redundant here.

A)has decided that this year's profits will be used
B)has decided on using this year's profits

Which of the above two options is correct?Really confused!

option A is correct.

look at the parallelism. "...profits will be used for research.......................rather than for a......."

Parallelism is of course there but I think the error does not lies there, error is in underlined part.

I think this sentence needs subject clarification means what the subject has decided, and therefore, phrase following "decided" is a restrictive phrase which should be precede by a relative pronoun "that" which is a case in (A). Hence correct

Kindly post the explanation also.

Explanation for the question posted earlier.

Recent indications of weakness in the economy have led consumers to be more conservative with their purchases; so depressed have sales figures been as a result that the government has launched several initiatives to actively encourage consumer spending .

(a)so depressed have sales figures been as a result that

so.............that ----> idiomatic usage.

But hold for a second, let us see how the other options fare.

(b) the sales figures have been so depressed as a result that

misplaced modifier.
"as a result" should modify "the sales figures". But is is not happening. Look at sample below.
"....weakness in econmy have led consumers to be more conservative with their purchases; as a result, the sales figures have depressed....... "

(c) as a result, so depressed has the sales been that

"has" is the culprit here. should be "have" because "sales" is plural

(d) the resulting sales figures having been so depressed that

"having" is the culprit.

(e) the sales figures have been so depressed that, as a result,

misplaced modifier.

Elimination rest of the choices left us with only A. Thus the answer.

Any question/suggestion is welcome. πŸ˜ƒ

My answer D
Q. According to Interstudy, a nonprofit organization that studies health maintenance organizations (HMOs), they estimate that, in comparison to last year, when only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs was profitable, this year 73 percent will be.
(A) they estimate that, in comparison to last year, when only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs was profitable, this year 73 percent will be
(B) compared to only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs being profitable last year, they estimate 73 percent would be this year
(C) only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be
(D) it estimates 73 percent of the nations 607 HMOs would be profitable this year; last year that was only 36 percent
(E) only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs last year were profitable, whereas they estimate it this year to be 73 percent

Let us disect the options one by one.

(A) they estimate that, in comparison to last year, when only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs was profitable, this year 73 percent will be

there is no antecedent available for they. "Interstudy" should be refered by "it". Thus eliminate the option.

(B) compared to only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs being profitable last year, they estimate 73 percent would be this year

eliminated---same reasoning as above

(C) only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs were profitable last year; it estimates that this year 73 percent will be

everything is fine here . thus the answer

(D) it estimates 73 percent of the nations 607 HMOs would be profitable this year; last year that was only 36 percent

According to Interstudy it estimates is not a correct construction. Thus eliminate this choice also.

(E) only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs last year were profitable, whereas they estimate it this year to be 73 percent

same culprit again. eliminate it .

Thus the answer according to me is (C). Please post the OA.

Hi guys..i have a clarification...pls see the below line:

"Forget, for a moment, whether marginal rates are too high or too low."

my doubt is...when we go with the parallelism....should there be an extra "are" in the above sentence ("or are too low")?

If not, can someone please explain the reasoning.

Maybe i am getting confused here, but i really need to clear it.

thanks!!

In the above sentence the second "are" is implicit so for conciseness we omit it. Thus extra "are" is not required.
Let us disect the options one by one.

(A) they estimate that, in comparison to last year, when only 36 percent of the nations 607 HMOs was profitable, this year 73 percent will be

there is no antecedent available for they. "Interstudy" should be refered by "it". Thus eliminate the option.

eliminated---same reasoning as above

Correct d OA is (C)
