Official Answer is A.
1. In good years, the patchwork of green fields that surround the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of them in the area just for the season.
(A) surround the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of them
(B) surrounds the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of whom are
(C) surround the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of who are
(D) surround the San Joaquin Valley town bustle with farm workers, many of which
(E) surrounds the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many are
2. In astronomy the term red shift denotes the extent to which light from a distant galaxy has been shifted toward the red, or long-wave, end of the light spectrum by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the Earth.
(A) to which light from a distant galaxy has been shifted
(B) to which light from a distant galaxy has shifted
(C) that light from a distant galaxy has been shifted
(D) of light from a distant galaxy shifting
(E) of the shift of light from a distant galaxy

Question 1 : IMO B. "the patchwork of green fields" is a singular entity. Thus should be followed by "surrounds". "many of whom are" is correctly used for workers.

Question 2 : IMO A . "has been shifted" is used correctly in a passive voice sentence.
This is a tricky subject-verb agreement question. Many a times, a bit of logic and Process of elimination also makes things easy.

The two prominent verbs in the underlined portion, that you need to decide about, are surround and bustles. It is clear that both these verbs describe the same subject (in other words, whatever surround(s) the San Joaquin valley bustle(s) with farm workers). So, we know that either both verbs should be singular (surrounds and bustles) or both verbs should be plural (surround and bustle).

With this simple fact alone, we can directly knock off a and c (a uses surround and bustles, while c uses surround and bustles). In choice d, which modifies farm workers, but we know that almost always, which modifies non-living things. So, d is out as well.

Lastly, between b and e, b is the clear winner, since e does not use any pronoun (who/whom/them) at all, and so the two parts of the sentence are not appropriately linked, thereby creating a run-on sentence.

Essentially, what weve seen above is that while this was a core subject-verb agreement question, we have arrived at the answer without using any concepts from subject-verb agreement. In fact, this should be the approach in all the SCs that you get stuck with. Do remember that in almost all the sentence corrections, GMAT simultaneously tests more than one grammatical concept. So, if you cannot figure out the correct answer based on one concept, see if you can arrive at the answer based on any other concept/process.

This question has been discussed atleast once since I joined this forum a month and half ago. I remember that the OA is (A) for this question although I myself had opted (B). No one had given the OE for this question so I myself tried and found out that use of relative pronoun "whom" is inappropriate in (B)
as it is acted as subject in last phrase and is not properly modifying "farm worker". "whom" generally used as object of the subject in a grammatically correct sentence.
"them" in A clearly modify "farm worker" and is appropriate usage.

Education Aisle consider this yar and help or plz someone post genuine OE

Thanks
Atrish,

Are you saying that "was brushing her teeth" is simple past??
I believe, it is past continuous.

Sumit

Sharp observation Sumit
Yeah "brushing her teeth" is obviously past continuous. But then also first sentence is better than second one.

I think its D

(A) authorities granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the group that later would be called by the name of
(B) authorities granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the group that later to be called by the name of
(C) authorities granting a permit for experimentation using human subjects to the group that later would be called by the name of

(C) will venture to Mars again, a planet now known as being
(D) venture again to Mars, a planet that is known now to be
(E) will again venture to Mars, a planet known now as being

IMO A.

"....planet now known to be cold, dry and probably lifeless" is the only correct phrase.
1. It was an increase in reported cases of malaria along the Gulf Coast that in 1921 led the health authorities granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the group that later would be called by the name of Unimedco.
(A) authorities granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the group that later would be called by the name of
(B) authorities granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the group that later to be called by the name of
(C) authorities granting a permit for experimentation using human subjects to the group that later would be called by the name of
(D) authorities to grant a permit for human experimentation to the group later called
(E) authorities to grant a permit for human experimentation to the group that later would be called by the name of

IMO E.

A,B and C can be eliminated straight away due to "authorities granting... " error.

Out of D and E. D is ambiguous

(D) authorities to grant a permit for human experimentation to the group later called
(E) authorities to grant a permit for human experimentation to the group that later would be called by the name of

IMO the answer is E. the sentence actually looks like "It was the increase....that led.... to ...." that rules out A,B,C. d is ambiguous calling the increase as Unimedco. The answer should be E, perfectly calls the group as Unimedco.
plz post OA.

This one is little confusing to me. Which should be given priority, sub-verb agreement or idiom usage. "known to be..." seems to be correct use of idiom in A. but A says "spacecraft venture to mars..." shouldnt it be "spacecraft ventures to mars..." Use of "may..." as a verb rules out option C and E. when there is a possibility, "will" cant be used... that leaves us with A,B,D. out of them A conveys the clear meaning.

please post OA and explanation as well, if possible.
