can you please give little more explanation why B is wrong and E is right. According to me B seems to be more appropriate and we are giving a contrast in the second part of the sentence. Please correct me if I'm thinking in the wrong direction :)
hello sahil,
"his right hand..." clearly and gramaticaly modifies the subject, horace pippin. B actually changes the meaning of original sentence. The point here is that pippin`s method of painting arose because of, not inspite of, his injury.
After the debacle that lasted ten days, the entire party is for the bill, ready to stake their political existence. 1)the entire party is for the bill, ready to stake their 2)the entire party are for the bill, ready to stake their 3)the entire party is for the bill, ready to stake its 4)the entire party is ready to stake its,for the bill, give reasons for grammatically correct option. --- i am not convinced with OA someone pl. help with the rules of common noun
A REAL BEAUTY :cheerio:
option a
here part is a gathering showing unity in nature, whereas political existence is always referred in plural tone (stake of members not party.)
1.Camus broke with Sartre in a bitter dispute over the nature of Stalinism. 1.Doctors still know little about how the Listeria bacterium is spread and why the disease it causes, listeriosis, afflicts some people in a contaminated area though it spares many others. (A) though it spares (B) where it spares (C) despite sparing (D) when sparing (E) while sparing
1.Doctors still know little about how the Listeria bacterium is spread and why the disease it causes, listeriosis, afflicts some people in a contaminated area though it spares many others. (A) though it spares (B) where it spares (C) despite sparing (D) when sparing (E) while sparing
I would go with option E
what is "it" modifying in option A and B, the disease "listeriosis" ,"contaminated area" or "Listeria bacterium"??? I think in A "it" is modifying "contaminated area" if not then sentence should conclude like this "though it spares many others there. In option B, the usage of "where" an adverb of place is inappropriate. Option C changes the original meaning of the sentence. Option D uses "when" an adverb of time which is wrong.
Option E uses "while" which means that the two actions are taking place in present or together ,"at a time Listeriosis afflicts some people and in a same time sparing others". Hence correct

The gratitude of every home in our Island goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their exemplary courage
1) The gratitude of every home in our Island goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their exemplary courage 2) The gratitude of each home at our Island goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by odds, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their exemplary courage 3) The gratitude of every home in our Island goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by the odds, are turning the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their exemplary courage 4) The gratitude of each home in our Island goes out to the British airmen who, undaunted by the odds, are turning to the tide of the World War by their prowess and by their exemplary courage

A really interesting question....
I would rule out 3&4 because of the usage of undaunted by the odds...
For example, in spite of all odds, he won the championship...
Between 1&2, i would rule out 2 because it uses each home at our Island for the following reasons:
Since, one uses "each" to indicate that the members of the set should be accessed/considered/counted/inspected/... one by one, and "every" to indicate that the members of the set should be .... simultaneously.
Additionally usage of at is incorrect... for eg. it should be every home in my apartment not every home at my apartment...
Unlike modern feminism, which derives much of its strength from rejection of an oppressive home, Marietta Holley in her novels made domesticity the basis of womens liberation.

Rule : like is used to compare two similar things ...
Only E) compares novels so it the right answer in my opinion

My 2 cents for option D.
Reason: 'like' is used to compare similar things
Unlike those...gives a clear indication that the author talks of the novels when (s)he uses 'those'. Thereafter in the same sentence the comparison is made to novels. Just to check, if I replace 'those' with 'the novels' it makes good sense and holds its meaning well.
Option E for me doesnt sound very good when I replace the 'those' with the phrase 'the novels'.
nishantthacker, In option D) Unlike those of the modern feminist who ----novels of Marietta Holley who compares modern feminist with novels in E)Unlike those of modern feminism, which ---- Marietta Holley' s novels which compares two novels...
nishantthacker, In option D) Unlike those of the modern feminist who ----novels of Marietta Holley who compares modern feminist with novels in E)Unlike those of modern feminism, which ---- Marietta Holley s novels which compares two novels...
So E), any ways let's wait for OA..
Even i feel it should be E... as novels are being compared and not the authors...

option d.
reason- modern feminism is an abstract noun being qualified bymarietta holy's novels which is a proper noun
a noun can't be qualified by noun but by adjective
There are umpteen cases in English when a noun that qualifies another noun works as an Adjective. For example, horse cart, family photo, cricket match etc.
While your reasoning for this particilar question is not very clear to me, the instances of nouns functioning as adjectives are so common that would suggest you do not choose or disregard any answer choice on the basis of this.
@ Education Aisle What is wrong with A ? I still think it is the best option?

I will also go for A, as the reporter has said the things i.e in past and the action in the preceding phrase has happened before his reporting and was continued till the the time he said to start blah..blah...!!
