GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Is the answer ".......supposedly Mediterranean predecessors."

If not, then my logic fails.

PS: BTW "supposed" is an adjective and "supposedly " is an adverb.

Ok
then please tell me which of the following sentence is correct? I don't think the +ve & -ve thing will work here.

Carbon-14 dating reveals that the megalithic monuments in Brittany are nearly 2,000 years as old as any of their supposed Mediterranean predecessors.

hi all,

i gone through previous threads...
let me help in understanding the difference here..

in this case... mediterranean predecessors is a noun rather than mediterranean , representing adjective... and predecessors noun..

so supposed modify noun hence right ans
but
supposedly modify adjective/adverb which is not the case here..

here mediterranean poredecessors is a complex noun similar to hand karchief, good morning, hong konk,etc..

hope helps all...

ye..i second his opinion...an adjective shud be present rather than an adverb in this place since it precedes a noun..

hi ajay,

this question is tricky one.
we can discuss further on this

suppossed mediterrinean predecessors ..if we emphasize this word then suppossedly seems correct like adjective modifier.
but

suppossed mediterrinean predecessors.. if we emphasize this word then suppossed seems correct like noun modifier..

in my opinion later choice seems correct.

we can look with other examples , nice hand kerchief here nice is noun modifier..

what ur opinion.

wat i feel is the first sentence can be re-framed as "supposed predecessors found in the Mediterranean"...so, the sentence implies that the monuments found in the Mediterranean are assumed to be predecessors of the ones tht the Carbon method identified..

Hi Puys,

Came across a few question in GMATPrep which i cudn't solve. Please check the attached document. Please tell the correct answers and the reasons y the other answer choices are wrong
Thanks in advance.

Hi Puys,

Came across a few question in GMATPrep which i cudn't solve. Please check the attached document. Please tell the correct answers and the reasons y the other answer choices are wrong
Thanks in advance.

1. the sentence implies that Oneida was the only country among the group of 5 to support.
A - "only one of the five" is wrong..it shud hv read "only one amongst the five"
B - "was alone" is wrong
D - "were" is wrong
E - obviously wrong!

2.
A - "removing it..." missing subject
B - incorrect use of past perfect tense..shud hv been simple past.
D,E - 'scientists' shud hv been introduced in the first half of sentence ( i dont knw the formal terms so plz excuse me)

3.
the answer is B because it is the only statement that compares price of this year to price of previous year...rest all statements compare price of current year model with last year models themselves...

4.
since is used when you want to describe an event from its starting point in time. eg." he has been staying here since 1985...
options B and C do not fit this definition because the event had already occured, so it describes a period and not a point...
E is too wordy - 'it took less than... ' and '..then..'
D can be eliminated simply because ignoring all other mistakes, the phrase shud have read as "took... for..." and not "took..when..."
so answer is option A.

hey dude..can u elaborate on the use of -ing verbs/adverbs
for example

Even in this age of conservation, cooking ranges that consume fossil fuels are far more common than those that rely on magnetic resonance, producing heat more efficiently than natural gas.
producing heat more efficiently than natural gas
producing heat more efficiently than natural gas does
which produce heat more efficiently than natural gas
which produce heat more efficiently than natural gas does
much more efficient at producing heat than natural gas

if it had a choice like "which produces heat more.......does" ..which one is preferred?

Hi Ajay,
Thanks for the explanations. I have still not understood the 2nd question.
even the Option D seems to be right....

Is the ans E?
My take on this :
C & D - Acc to question, Magnetic Reasonance produces more heat than Natural Gas, so "which produce" shud have been replace by "which produces"
A & B - No qualifier for the expression "producing.........". I think this doesn't give the rite meaning.

What is the OA?
ajayreddy Says
is the answer C???

nah man da correct answer is "B"
"C" is incorrect cuz "the production of heat"-an action- must be accompanied with "does"
i choose "D" ..i gues it was wrong cuz it has da singular "produce"

my question still remains...plz elaborate on the use of "-ing" verbs/adverbs

has to be B
well has to be does as it is a comparison
which produce changes the tense ..the flow is necessary choose the simplest possible answer

Dear all,

here are my views about ing

ing words in sentence correction are pointers to eliminate, find options

ing forms are noun ing==gerund == noun in action e.g swimming all the night
verb ing==present participle == verb in continous action. he is talking nicely
adjective ing eg dancing doll,

as far as i know adverb ing form never exist...and this is a pointer to eliminate some of the options of SC. further their are rules like

had/have/has verb object
to be verb form object
possession noun should not follow ing verb. eg player's taking ... correct player to take

ing verb used in progressive case only and avoid as far as possible, use only in case of emphasis required with reference to context.

noun ing form work like same as that, which of clause, phrases. noun ing clause and that clause in most of GMAT sentences are acceptable. we can eliminate one of them based on expression, meaning .

hope it help all...

any one differ in views welcome for discussions..

using - is too strong
the first sentence doesn't go with the next

This has to do with Clause and Subject

The above statement gives the impression that "twelfth week of pregnancy" uses a doppler ultrasound to detect fetal heartbeats

e wins ....so d eliminated due to unidomic structure... is ... over ..are often.

1. E
"..there is one" does not go with "when it is not", so A and B are out. C seems to be too wordy. D has parallelism error.

2. E
how items are placed.... indicates the second part should also begin with how, so A,B, C are out. D might have been correct but "are often" at the end seems odd to me.

3. D
The correct answer should definitely begin with "partly" and not "in part" as second part of the sentence says "partly because...". So we have to choose from C, D and E. C and E have parallelism error...because of in C does not go with "because cross breeding....". Similarly "partly to ...partly because" do not go together.
