GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hi All,
I have attached 7 Sentence Correction (SC) questions. Can you please advise me of the correct answers and their justifications. These are the questions that I encountered in the official GMATPrep software. So undoubtedly these are extremely representative of the REAL deal.

- TheToastedBread

P.S: The responses marked in the attachments with the dark black dots are wrong (they are mine). The ones marked with a square blue frame are correct as marked by the software. The problem is I am not able to comprehend why the answers marked in the Blue Frame are correct? Many thanks.
Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes and so were probably without language, a
shortcoming that may explain why they were supplanted by our own species.
(A) Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes
(B) Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an ape's
(C) The vocal tracts of Neanderthals resembled an ape's
(D) The Neanderthal's vocal tracts resembled the apes
(E) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes

I feel the answer is B.

A Those cannot refer to singular vocal tract
C Subject is Neanderthals not the vocal tract. As later in the sentence it is Neanderthals who were probably without the language not the vocal tract
D Again they refers to Neanderthals and not to Nenanderthal's vocal tracts
E Subject should be Neanderthals and not the vocal tracts

Ingrid

these are my possible explanations...puys, plz correct me if i m wrong :

Q.No.2 :

2 & 4 - 'documenting' is incorrectly used in place of 'documentation of'..this can clearly be distinguished as verb used in place of noun..
3 - the sentence is talking about Mary's contributions...since the sentence starts with "in addition to her works..", it means that her works were already a contribution to archaeology..this statement attempts to exclude Mary's works as a part of her contributions..
5 - i can see two flaws....firstly, the entire tone is in past tense, so the verb should be 'included' and not 'include'...and secondly, 'discovering' cannot be used as a verb here..(i dont knw if i can call it a subordinate verb or as such), but it should have been used as a noun form here so that the statement would hv read as "her contributions included the discovery of ----- and the documentation of ----"

Q.No. 3:

2 - "was" is missing...the sentence should hv read as "lightning was still..."
3 - improper use of 'past continuous' tense...the sentence begins in a 'past perfect' tone (...and banks had installed) and should end in a past perfect tone
4 - 'was' used in place of 'were'....there might be some other glaring mistakes, but this simple detection is enough to strike off the option.
5 - 'had been' (past perfect continuous) is incorrect..the correct verb should have been 'was still provided by...'

Q.No.4 :

1 - 'former' is improperly used....the sentence means to convey that "Joan attended more than 400 meetings and reviewed more than 700 applications 'when he was' (as) the chairman of the planning board as well as a board member.

2, 3, 4 - same rule as above...the sentence means to convey.....

Q.No. 5 :
1 - 'which' is improperly used...the sentence implies that the coastal waters expose the remains (i.e. they, on their own accord, try to expose the remains, i.e. they are given life)

3 - 'as opposed to' improperly used...the sentence is making a comparision between shipwrecks and shallow waters whereas the comparision is between shipwrecks found at great depths and shipwrecks found in shallow waters

4 - same reason as 1 as well as incorrect idiom...it should hv read as "more likely to be found in/at ______ than in/at ____)

5 - 'it' is wrongly used and same reason as 3 where 'as opposed to' is replaced by 'instead of'

Q.No.6 :

2 - 'that' is used in place of 'which'...when referring to quantity, 'which' is used and when referring to objects, 'that' is used

3 - 'it' is improperly introduced at 'it holds more than..'

4 - 'while' is incorrectly used..while refers to describing two or more events that take place at around the same time..eg. 'while he does THIS....why dont you do THAT'

5 - improper sentence construction

Q.No. 7 :

1 & 2 - 'imposing' is wrongly used in place of 'that impose'..here imposing refers to action by a third party as a consequence of union-workers being less likely to enroll in insurance plans

3 - improper use of comma...the actual sentence conveys that doctors should see more patients and spend less time with each patient...however, here, the sentence means that the plan should spend less time with each patient

5 - 'requiring' used in place of 'require'....the actual sentence implies that the plan requires stricter limits as well as doctors to see more patients while this statement means that due to stricter limits, the doctors should see more patients..

The following question is very easy.

Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged in 1911Scott Joplin's ragtime operaTreemonishawas not produced until 1972sixty-one years after its completion
(A) Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged
(B) Except for a concert performance with the composer himself staging it
(C) Besides a concert performance being staged by the composer himself
(D) Excepting a concert performance that the composer himself staged
(E) With the exception of a concert performance with the staging done by the composer himself.

Can anyone explain when should EXCEPT be used and when BESIDES?

Besides (alternatively given as "beside" in some dictionaries) as a preposition means "in addition to, or "plus":
(a)
Besides "a," "e," "i," "o," and "u," the English alphabet often uses "y" as a vowel, as in "early" and "myself."
(b)
Florida has several industries besides tourism citrus, cattle, and the Space Coast, for example.
(c)
Candidates need to demonstrate other qualities besides intelligence; they need to be compassionate and restrained, too.

Except as a preposition means with exclusion, rejection, or exception; everything other than; it carries the meaning of "minus":
(d)
Brazil borders on every country in South America except Chile and Ecuador.

(e)
The stores in the mall are open every day except on national holidays.

(f)
A year except those divisible by 4, such as 1996 and 2000 has 365 days.

My Guess:

The answe here is A. Do let me know if I am right.

Hello All,
Once again I took the official GMATPrep test (this time Test nos. 2). And once again had a few queries with regards some Sentence Correction (SC) questions that I got wrong. As in my earlier post, I have once again attached the questions I got wrong. The options marked with the bold black dot in the attachment are mine and are the wrong answers. The options marked by a square blue frame are correct as these are the correct answers marked by the software. However the software does not explain why a particular choice is correct and others are wrong. I will be very grateful if some of you can help justify why the correct choice is actually correct! Many thanks.

P.S: Special thanks to Ajay for helping out with the last one!

Ques 1. "declaring themselves" is used to show that the process of declaration is currently going on and has not stopped yet. The whole sentence is in present tense. Also, the use of "to" in the end is correct instead of "at" since we are talking of an increase.

Ques. 2 A tough one..I myself would have marked B and got it wrong....
Maybe it uses the fact that an "ability" doesn't become accuracte...its a scientist who becomes "accurate"..others Please comment on this..

Ques 3. Parallelism...."having.....or having"

Ques 4. Parallelism + WOrdy and awkward construction

"constructed by Yana" ",and banked" are parallel, so should be same. was banked makes it little awkward.

Am I correct?

Q.No.1:

1&3 - we are talking about 1997, so we are talking about an event that has already occurred...hence, incorrect use of present participle "has jumped"

4&5 - 'by' is missing at 'jumped BY almost 20%" and when sumthing increases, it increases frm a previous value TO a new value..not AT a new value...so incorrect use of 'at'

Q.No.2:

1 - sentence construction is incorrect...'seasonal and daily cycles' refer to 'changing conditions of atmosphere' while this sentence implies tht the 'seasonal and daily cycles' are 'models'...try to read it this way :
"......to provide models of ........, like ......., has become more accurate"

2,4&5 - its not the ability that has become more accurate but the scientists themselves..ability is a possessive/characteristic trait of humans and it does not have a value to increase, decrease or become more/less accurate

Q.No.3 :

2 - 'drug prescription' is different frm 'prescribed a drug'..the former refers to the note written by doctors whereas the latter refers to the patient being instructed to take the drugs.

3 - gramatically incorrect....this sentence reads as - "some patients...may have received inadequate treatment as having too low..."and "too low" is also incorrect in this context

4& 5 - incorrect change of tense...the sentence begins with a present perfect "have" and then changes the latter part of the statement to past continuous "being"/"been"

Q.No.4 :

2 - the actual statement means that the tents were banked with dirt to a height of 3-4 feet..the min. dirt level being 3 ft. and the max level being 4ft....this statement "as high as" tends to imply that the max. level was 3 ft and the actual levels cud be lower than 3 ft which is incorrect..and "that of" is incorrect use..

3 - the tents were 'banked with dirt'...this statement implies that the poles were banked...since house is referred to as singular in the original statement and the only plural thing is 'poles' mentioned before referring to banking...

4&5 - same as option 2

hope it solves ur query...atb

Hi guys

Is it possible for somebody to kindly send me 1000SC along with answers.
I do have 1000SC but no answers:(

So was hoping if someone can help me with this

Any idea, how long would it take to finish 1000 SC and 1000 CR??????

Hi All,
In my prep for GMAT SC, I was hoping to get some more practise....I have heard people referring 1000 SCs. Does anyone have a link from where the Questions and Solutions can be downloaded?
Most importantly - is 1000 SC a good material to study? i.e: the last thing you want is to study some non-standard stuff that adversely affects your grammar...in that regard, is 1000 SC a good material to bank on?

hi Sumit a.k.a google 😃 thats the correct answer B
. A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.
(A) had elected early retirement rather than face
(B) had elected early retirement instead of facing
(C) have elected retiring early instead of facing
(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

the answer is E...
first of all, note that the first half of the sentence is in present perfect tense(...a recent study HAS found...)..so the following sentence should also be in present perfect tense..hence, A and B can be eliminated...
C - 'to' missing (have elected TO...)
D - last part of the sentence is wrong...first half is in present perfect and last is in continuous tense

Hello every body..
I was going through the 1000 sc_questions. I jus wanted to know how useful it is? I find many questions vague....
