GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

".. spiders" in the original sentence is changed to "... spider" , hence singular

1. Although the Supreme Court ruled as long ago as 1880 that Blacks could not be excluded outright from jury service, nearly a century of case-by-case adjudication has been necessary to develop and enforce the principle that all juries must be drawn from a fair cross section of the community.
(A) has been necessary to develop and enforce the principle that all juries must be
(B) was necessary for developing and enforcing the principle of all juries being
(C) was to be necessary in developing and enforcing the principle of all juries to be
(D) is necessary to develop and enforce the principle that all juries must be
(E) will be necessary for developing and enforcing the principle of all juries being
The answer to this one is A. I marked it D, though. Can i know why do we use present participle instead of simple present tense?

U can eliminate B and E immediately (usage of being .. awkward)
Can also eliminate C "was to be .." wordy and awkward

That leaves us with A and D ... both are grammatically correct, but option D changes the meaning of the sentence.

A is the only option which retains the right logical flow and grammar.

Ok. thanks for bringing the wrong usage of "either - or" to my notice. Had it been somewhat like this: Although dozens of New York's small museums are devoted either to local history or various ethnic groups, there are
then it would 've been correct.
And yes i completely agree with you on option C. It sounds the best amongst all and makes a suitable comparison too with the help of the conjunction "but" quite unlike D which doesn't make a comparison at all.

".. spiders" in the original sentence is changed to "... spider" , hence singular

I'm sorry but nowhere in the sentence has the term 'spiders' changed to 'spider'. Thje question actually revolves around the bite and its venom (poison) which is singular.

Can you tell me how does it change the meaning of the sentence?
1. Although the bite of brown recluse spiders are rarely fatal, they cause chronic flesh wounds, posing the greatest danger to the infant and elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to its poison.
(A) brown recluse spiders are rarely fatal, they cause chronic flesh wounds, posing the greatest danger to the infant and elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to its
(B) brown recluse spiders are rarely fatal, they cause chronic flesh wounds and pose the greatest danger to the infant and elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to their
(C) the brown recluse spider is rarely fatal, it causes chronic flesh wounds, posing the greatest danger to the infant and elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to their
(D) the brown recluse spider is rarely fatal, it causes chronic flesh wounds and poses the greatest danger to infants and the elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to its
(E) the brown recluse spider is rarely fatal, they cause chronic flesh wounds, posing the greatest danger to the infant and elderly, who are particularly vulnerable to its
The answer to this one is D and i completely concur with it. But 'm a little confused. Read the last sentence carefully. It says the infant and elderly are vulnerable to its poison. Now if the sentence is referring to the spider's poison then it should be wrong coz we aren't considering only a single spider but we are talking of them in general "Brown recluse spiders". Hence, its should be theirs.
Though i thought the other way round too, thinking it to be bite's poison. But it doesn't make sense to me at all.
Can someone help me clarify this one?

Agreed. "its" in D could refer to the bite or the spider. However, i don't think the bite possesses poison. But, whether "its" refers to the bite or the spider, the sentence is grammatically sound compared to others. I read in another forum ( a very reliable one) that in cases such as these, where a pronoun refers to more than one referent but the integrity, logic or meaning of the sentence remained intact, then the sentence is acceptable.

I think "D" is the right option .. Since the sentence is of "either" or " but or is missing ... So but is the nearing the purpose in stead of "or" making "D" right choice.

i think the answer is D.
because...it is talking about the poison of the spider....therefore...its poison....not their.....as the sentence describe the particular race of spiders.....but focused more on its stingy poison....therefore..its option D.

Hi All,
I am new to this forum. I want to give GMAT this year, can you all please suggest me to good senetnce correction practice questions.

Although C with "an escaped slave herself" sentence is better than A, "for guiding" is a wrong idiomatic expression. "to guide" is the correct answer. Hence A is the best.

I think the answer is C.
an escaped slave herself modifies Hariet Tubman.
and i think for guiding is not wrong.

"should" in C,D,E and "while" in D and "If only" in E are wrong usage.
In A and B, Avoiding is better over avoidance. So, IMO = B
