For no.1, the idiom is not x but rather y, so IMO , the whole thing becomes " not the right, but rather the affirmation.." . Since that choice is not available, the closest choice is " not the right....but rather its affirmation" since " its affirmation" is also a definite noun

deepakraam Says
I will choose option D for the above SC
The answer is indeed D. did this ques 2 days ago. will give the explanation, jitna i remember. if you want exact explanation then will update it tomo.
Here are the reasons why D is right and not E:
1)Sediments from the Baltic sea is right (even you picked it up) it modifies correctly that heavy metals are of the sediments which are from the Baltic sea. 2)Now in E, it says, consistent with. but ask yourself-what is consistent with 'what'? the sediments from baltic sea? D helps to answer this ques- the findings are consistent. 3)and in E the last part says industrial activity there.... Now where is this 'there'? D helps to say that industrial activity in the area.
Pls ans the below Qs. with explanation. Thanks in advance!
1. To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, and she remained in france duirng the secong world war as a performer and an intelligence agent for the resistance.
a) To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, b) For Josephine Baker, long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate Paris was her home, c) Josephine Baker made Paris her home long before to be an expatriate was fashionable , d) Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker made Paris her home, e) Long before it was fashionable being an expatriate, Paris was her home to Josephine Baker,
I too go with D. A -> To Josephine Baker and the part "and she remained" is not correct. B -> THe same way here and adding to this, "long before it was fashionable" is placed wrongly. That is a modifier for Paris but not Josephine C-> "long before to be an expatriate was fashionable" doesn't refer properly to Paris D -> "Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate" - Though the modifier is away from its subject, IT clearly refers to Paris and the continuity is supported by this option E -> "Paris was her home to Josephine Baker" this is awkward and Josephine Baker is not referred to when "she" is used in the remaining sentence

I am always confused when it comes to As Vs Like.I Know 1.As is used for clauses , Like for nouns 2.Like is used for similar things , maily similies etc , As for comparing same things.
Please look at below ques: During an ice age, the buildup of ice at the poles and the drop in water levels near the equator speed up the Earth's rotation, like a spinning figure skater whose speed increases when her arms are drawn in. (A) like a spinning figure skater whose speed increases when her arms are drawn in (B) like the increased speed of a figure skater when her arms are drawn in (C) like a figure skater who increases speed while spinning with her arms drawn in (D) just as a spinning figure skater who increases speed by drawing in her arms (E) just as a spinning figure skater increases speed by drawing in her arms We are comparing Earth's rotation and Spinning figure skater : So should we use As or Like? This is an unreal comparison(justifies use of like) but compares clauses(justifies use of as)

Did this one a few days ago. I just glanced thru the answers and eliminate what i thought was "wrong" and tried to remember what Manhattan guide says.. E-- "being" is almost always wrong A,B,C--GMAt always prefers modifying phrases at the beginning of the sentences, next to the subject Avoid passive construction Choose the shortest and clearest sentence Start the sentence or main clause with the subject
Just by following the tips above, i came up with D. It works well with shorter sentences

I think this is a "real" comparison between 2 clauses, not simile. So "as" is needed here

Xxx?People can debate the aesthetic merits of these overwrought, disquieting, sometimes gruesome works of art, but no one can dispute their creators' mastery of the paintbrush as a blunt instrument. A. but no one can dispute their creators' mastery of the paintbrush as a blunt instrument. B. but none can dispute their creators' mastery of the paintbrush as a blunt instrument. C. but not a one can dispute their creators' mastery of the paintbrush as a blunt instrument. D. but no person can dispute their creators' mastery of the paintbrush as a blunt instrument. E. but none can dispute to their creators' mastery of the paintbrush as a blunt instrument.
I am confused between options A and B. Thats because, i am not sure on when to use 'none' and when to use 'no one'.
