GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hope this clears your doubt.

wow! that's a detailed explanation :)
Thanks Neha. That definitely clears my doubt.
Even i went wth the answers C and A
But the OAs are E and A respectively.

In case of the first question, the explanation was given as - "hopefully cannot be used". Can someone thrw light on why E is correct and why not C?

Here is the explanation I found:
The Proper Word Usage of Hopefully: How To Use the Word Hopefully Correctly in All Contexts | Suite101.com

Summary:
1. Hopefully is an adverb and not a verb
2. To check proper use, replace the word by "full of hope" or "in a hopeful manner" and see whether it still makes sense.
3. Try to avoid usage of this word
I have a doubt friends...

If you use either or neither in a sentence alone (without or/nor) the sentence takes singular verb.

Where do we use 'either'/'neither' without or/nor?

Is this correct? What if the subject itself is plural. Then shouldn't the verb become plural as well.

Sorry if its a simple question. My hold on English grammar is a little less than normal! :banghead:

First of all, Trapezio, it's alright if you are having trouble in grammar. No need to be so hard on your self. We all are learning. if things aren't clear then do them again slowly, chapter by chapter and keep going on the rules again. it will come by time.

Trapezio Says
Thanks Yogesh. That clears it. So if either or neither is used in a sentence without or/nor, the verb no matter what takes singular form.

Edited (reason - earlier reply was not correct):

Examples:
1. Either of the GMAT courses IS good for you. (not 'are').

Similarly,

2. Neither of the medicines WAS of any help to me. (not WERE).

Now, for your query:

1) Either/or and Neither/nor take the form of the subject that is nearest to them
examples-
1) Neither Jack nor his friends are going to the party.
2) Neither his friends nore Jack is going to the party.

2) After Neither + singular noun, the verb is singular
example- Neither player wants a transfer.

3) After Neither of + plural Noun, careful users prefer a singular verb.
example-
Neither of the players wants a tranfer.
Some people use a plural verb, escpecially in informal styles:
Neither of the players want a tranfer.

But for the GMAT,stick to the singular verb with Neither of + plural noun.

Neha

Thank you for the detailed reply. You made it simple.

Is the answer B?
A) is wordier?
C and D) modifier too far
E) wrong subject - verb agreement
Need explanations pls...

The modernization program for the steel mill will cost approximately 51 million dollars, which it is hoped can be completed in the late 1980's.

A) The modernization program for the steel mill will cost approximately 51 million dollars, which it is hoped can be completed in the late 1980's.
wrong usage of which
B) Modernizing the steel mill, hopefully to be completed in the late 1980's, will cost approximately 51 million dollars.

Hopefully doesnt make sense, it is wrong almost every time

C) The modernization program for the steel mill, hopefully completed in the late 1980's, will cost approximately 51 million dollars.

Hopefully completed - awkward

D) The program for modernizing the steel mill, which can, it is hoped, be completed in the late 1980's and cost approximately 51 million dollars.

Wrong usage of which ; steel mill doesnt needs to be completed rather the program

E) Modernizing the steel mill, a program that can, it is hoped, be completed in the late 1980's, will cost approximately 51 million dollars.

This is apt

In the late seventh century, in a dispute over whether the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law, Ali, should carry on as the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor, Islam split into two branches, the Sunnis and the Shiites.
A) over whether the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law, Ali, should carry on as the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor.. Better than other 4..

B) over whether Ali, the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law, was going to carry on and be the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor... redundant usage of carry on and be

C) concerning if the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor, was to be the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law, Ali Dispute over is the correct idiom

D) as to whether the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor, is to be the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-low, Ali Dispute over is the correct idiom

E) over if Ali, the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law, was going to carry on and be the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor ..... redundant usage of carry on and be..more over IF is needed

Explanation in blue
Is the answer B?
A) is wordier?
C and D) modifier too far
E) wrong subject - verb agreement

my take was D

OA is A

Explanation:
B - incorrectly uses "reflects" (singular predicate) for "price levels" (plural subject)
C - parallelism error - "than supply and demand" and "by price levels for services"
D - Ambiguous - "price levels reflect (consumer attitudes rather than supply & demand)" whereas it should be "(price levels rather than supply & demand) reflect..."
E - incorrectly uses 'are' for 'reflection' i.e. "the clearest reflection... are"

My question to all,
how come the phrase "it is price levels that reflects" is correct??

can someone share another example for such scenario?

The only possibility I can think of is if the subject "it" means "price levels for services".

Edit: reworded it.

Q:
Many economies maintain that it is price levels for services, rather than supply and demand, that most clearly reflect consumer attitudes toward inflation.

(A) it is price levels for services, rather than supply and demand, that most clearly reflect consumer attitudes toward inflation... Better than others

(B) price levels for services, rather than supply and demand, most clearly reflects consumer attitudes toward inflation.. . Subject Verb mismatch.. Levels.......reflects

(C) rather than supply and demand, consumer attitudes toward inflation are most clearly reflected by price levels for services.. Changes meaning, modifier error

(D) price levels for services most clearly reflect consumer attitudes toward inflation, rather than supply and demand.. modifier error

(E) the clearest reflection of consumer attitudes toward inflation are price levels for services rather than supply and demand. Not sure what is the error, but A reflects B and B is the reflection of A doesnt appear to be same.....

Wats the OA?

Both time I answered the Qs after the OAs were announced 😐

Best example is :: It is hoped (replacement of hopefully, which is always wrong in GMATland)

It is hoped that all of us will crack GMAT big time! (and yeah what a hope)

It is raining :|

I suggest you to rely on POE in such Qs!

Hey MU,
pardon my ignorance... can you expand the term POE ? :)
Power over Ethernet

and regarding my Q,
I was looking for examples like "it is prices levels that reflects" where "price levels that reflects" are plural subjects... but the verb used is "is" (for singular subject "it")
in your examples, "hoped"/"raining" are not plural subjects... hence use of "is" does not seem objectionable.

Hey Yogesh,

POE is Process of Elimination. It's a process to narrow down your answer choices. Wrong answer choices are easier to spot than right anwers. sometimes they just sound weird. at other times they are logically impossible. in gmat, you may not be able to eliminate all four incorrect answer choices at once but you will be almost always able to eliminate at least one of them-and frequently two or more-by using POE, which makes work and life both easier!
will explain by the help of an example:

Which of the following countries uses the peso as its unit of currency?

A) Russia
B) Canada
C) Venezuela
D) England
E) Chile

Now, you probably don't know the correct answer, but atleast you know the countires which don't use peso as its unit of curreny so you can eliminate them right away. like, certainly Russia, England and Canada don't use peso. Three out of five answer choices gone! so you are down to two answer choices. now even if you don't know the correct answer, it's obviously among Venezuela or Chile. no issues take a guess here and the probability of you getting an answer corrects increases from 20 to 50%!
Gmat does forces us to guess anyway, so why not make an intelligent guess?

To help you more, will give a SC example (since it's a SC thread!)

Registered brokerage firms have been required to record details of all the computerized program trades made in the past year so that government agencies will be able to decide whether they should be banned.

A) will be able to decide whether they should be banned
B) should be able to decide whether they should be banned
C) should be able to decide whether they can be banned
D) will be able to decide whether program trades should be able to be banned
E) will be able to decide whether program trades should be banned

In this case, Answer choice D fixes the orginial problem; there is no longer an ambiguous "they" in the sentence. But there is another problem there- that is-in Gmat only animate objects are "able" to do anything!
This eliminated 3 answer choices-A,B,C right away!
Answer choice A merely reapeats the origianl sentence. Choices B and C contain the same error that was found in the original sentence. now we are down to D and E. Both fix the orginial error but still D reapeats the error of inanimate objects being "able" to do anything.

Using POE, even if you don't know the correct answer, you can spot the incorrect choices, eliminate them and choose from the left ones with much more confidence. :)

Now for the examples of It being the subject:

Is easy to buy exactly what you want in a big city. -Incorrect.
It's easy to buy eaxctly what you want in a big city -Correct.

When you comment on a situation, the subjest of the sentance is usually it:
It's impossible to read in the dark.
It was good to see you again.
It's hot today, isn't?
It was a miracle that nobody was injured.

Note that in this pattern it has no meaning. It simply fills the subject position.

And in this ques, you gave:

Many economies maintain that it is price levels for services, rather than supply and demand, that most clearly reflect consumer attitudes toward inflation.

The sentence itself is right, the It here fills the place of the subject to tell it is prices levels for services that reflect the consumer attitudes toward inflation. and also has no errors of agreement. price levels (plural subject) agress with reflect (singular predicate).

Hope it clears your doubt.

Hi Deepanshu,

In the quew given below, your explaination is all right.
But for choice E, you wrote, more over IF is needed... want to ask where is If required? or you intended to write- more over whether is needed?

E) over if Ali, the Prophet Muhammad's son-in-law, was going to carry on and be the fourth caliph, Muhammad's successor ..... redundant usage of carry on and be..more over IF is needed

And can you ple give the OA for the following ques?

Another one::

The earliest English settlers in Virginia failed to survive their first winter in the New World because of factors such as inadequate food supplies, harsh weather, and an inability to communicate with Native Americans.

an inability
that they were unable
because they were unable
being unable

lacking an ability

Thankyou.
