I still didnt get it.
See, an earthquake will typically devastate.....in eastern US than one of comparable magnitude...in the west.
I think this is correct, isnt it ?
Choice A 'extending' seems correct
But why would choice b 'extends' be incorrect?
Also isnt it preferred to use simple present than using continuous tense?

You should note that here extending functions as a present participle and NOT as an action verb.

Thus the question is not about tenses..but about parallelism among participles.

IMO: B

The verb "extend" here describes the fungus and should parallel the verb "is" which is in simple present tense. Thus extends sounds good.

2.Made his/him/himself having
The pronoun here has antecedent Shostakovich s : possesive form
So choose possesive form of he = his

We now have only A and E
2.E is unidiomatic and changes meaning.

So Answer is A

I concur that the answer is C.
However , i have a doubt on the 2nd part of your reply.

even if the antecedent was Shostakovich, correct usage would have been 'his having'.
Is there any case when you use "him having"?..
I thought that "him having" is always wrong (even if the antecedant is in objective form). Can you please clarify this?.Any example?.

the answer is (d)....first it is a parallelism ques. so the diction has to be same...second..."railway commuters" is a plural noun...so we use noun agreement here ie...plural verb..

Hi Irkuz,
2 rules applied here:
1.Subject and Object pronouns cannot refer to Possesive nouns and must refer only Subj/Obj Nouns
2.Possesive Pronoun must always be used with gerund. Thus it would always be 'his having'.

The case you mentioned is Subj/Obj Noun
Here also we can can use possesive pronoun as there is no rule against that.
Also because rule 2 would still be applicable.
