GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Dumbjoe, not intending to belittle you. But somehow i always prefer to get my answers validated and then post the reasoning. Will post the explanation soon.

awww.... dont be so cocksure dude. may be the last answer was wrong, but if you cant figure out others, that does not necessarily make them wrong, does it?
and which is precisely the reason i requested the reasoning; i had the questions from 1000 SC. The answers are what they were given there, the validity of answers has been an issue with 1000 SC sometimes though the questions are mostly good. If you had shown a little camaraderie and did a bit of work in typing the reasoning, it would have been a greater help. we are not here to point fingers, but to help each other while learning ourselves from how others think. And i guess that takes a little effort from everyone. bear this in mind next time and instead of being a scavenger contribute in a positive way. I still hope you would take the pains to type the reasoning for the last answer :satisfie:

Guys plz post the explanation as well.

Hi All

I need some advice.

I have been preparing SC since past 16 days, still my accuarcy is between 85 to 88 percent. In the beginning, my accuracy was increasing but now it is stuck in this range. Also I find that during all these days while preparing SC the theory part has increased. Such that each day I find something new and that adds more to the concepts. But now my major time goes in reading the theory itself. As a result I am getting less time for solving problems.

I am not able to figure out where am I going wrong. What should I do to increase my accuracy. I have completed the SC section of Kaplan 2007 Edition, Kaplan Verbal workout, Kaplan 800 and OG11.

Please suggest.

1. It is characteristic of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as of virtually every great American museum, the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of their collections as has the judgments of the art historian.

3. Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, using it to help build a modern industrial system.
(A) Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, using it to help build
(B) Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War and used it to help in building
(C) Japan used the huge sums of capital it received from the United States after the Second World War to help build
(D) Japans huge sums of capital received from the United States after the Second World War were used to help it in building
(E) Receiving huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, Japan used it to help build

Here is my reasoning:

1.The recent surge in the number of airplane flights has clogged the nation's air-traffic control system, to lead to 55 percent more delays at airports, and prompts fears among some officials that safety is being compromised.
(A) to lead to 55 percent more delays at airports, and prompts

(B) leading to 55 percent more delay at airports and prompting
(C) to lead to a 55 percent increase in delay at airports and prompt
(D) to lead to an increase of 55 percent in delays at airports, and prompted
(E) leading to a 55 percent increase in delays at airports and prompting

Easiest of the 3 - look for parallelism and correct expressions - leading and prompting and 'an increase of'.

2. The Coastal Guard is conducting test to see whether pigeons can be trained to help find survivors of wrecks at sea.
(A) to see whether pigeons can be trained to help find
(B) to see whether pigeons can be trained as help to find
(C) to see if pigeons can be trained for helping to find
(D) that see if pigeons are able to be trained in helping to find
(E) that see whether pigeons are able to be trained for helping to find

Ok lets eliminate answers here. B is incorrect because it indicates that pigeons will act independently, in the nature of domestic help. (as help). It cannot be 'see that'..because its not the tests that see, but the coast guard! Also the correct expression is 'trained to do' something and not trained for. That leaves us with only A!

3. A controversial figure throughout most of his public life, the Black leader Marcus Garvey advocated that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom.
(A) that some Blacks return to Africa, the land that, to him, symbolized the possibility of freedom
(B) that some Blacks return to the African land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him
(C) that some Blacks return to Africa which was the land which symbolized the possibility of freedom to him
(D) some Black's returning to Africa which was the land that to him symbolized the possibility of freedom
(E) some Black's return to the land symbolizing the possibility of freedom to him, Africa

Tough and weird one this. elimination again. B is ruled out because sentence talks abou return to the Africa, not the return to the African land. C indicates, through the use of 'which was' that it no longer symbolizes freedom to him, which alters intent. also uses 'which' twice making the sentence a poor one. D and E say - "some Black's"..which is completley incorrect. The statement is talking of Blacks as a community, not Black's.

HTH.

Hey Ruchira,
As you said, its been just 16 days since you been doing SC. You dont need to panic. The key to any section is practice. Now you have mentioned all that you have finished in the past 16 days. And its quite a bit. Infact it seems too much. Practice doesnt mean only the number of questions that you attempt but the number of questions that you solve and understand. You need to give time to understand not only why a certain option is incorrect, but also in case of correct answer, you should analyse if your understanding is correct.
Also, in GMAT, you have about 1.75 mins per question. Are you utilizing that much time? Normally, we are used to solve a question as quickly as possible. But here we have as much as 100 seconds per question. Utilize the entire time. Then are a few basic rules:

1. Do not decide on an answer before reading all options.
2. Once you have selected an answer, read it with the complete sentence.
3. Try to eliminate all obvious errors first.
4. All basic SC rules that you find in any book should be applied to the option you are selecting.

Thats it for now. Will post again later if I have anything more to add.

Thanks,
Abhishek.

Thanks a lot. I was trying to solve problems in less time just to be on a safer side to finish on time. I had read it somewhere that we should try to solve in less than actual time. But I guess I will have to slow down a bit.

Hi varun...

could you please explain your ans choices for 1 and 2.

Hi Mridul,

Here is my reasoning:

1. I am just looking for subject verb agreement here. 'Judgements' of the art historian - plural. Therefore, it must be 'have' and not has. That narrows it down to C and D. Then again, it is 'taste'..so it must be has ! Thus, C.

2. The sentence's primary aim is to talk about problems in predicting patients' future behaviour. B is never mentioned. Accuracy decreases, not lessens so C is out. D is so roundabout and wordy that you can eliminate it straightaway. That leaves us with A and E. I would go with E for the reason mentioned in the first line...what the sentence aims to talk about. E makes more sense to me than A.

1. c
2. e
3. c
