My answer is A

No authority who is less than the designation of Walter has reported - This is the meaning.

B - Nonetheless is wrong. changes the meaning
C - Nevertheless changes the meaning
D - Here we compare a person who has equal or greater designation than walter. Not less is wrong
E - We are just comparing an authority instead an authority who has equal or greater designation than walter.

A is the correct answer. Thanks Ramviswa.

sandy_venkat Says
Guys, can someone explain when to use, double instead of twice or two times..what is the difference between them? I get pretty confused when i encounter questions with these.

twice ,thrice etc are generally used while making comparisions in the sentence whereas double, triple etc are used generally as a verb .
These questions are from the OG 10. These are the OA with official explanations:

1) A

Choice A, the best answer, preserves grammatical parallelism while allowing for logical expression of temporal
relationships; A employs the parallel participial phrases
spawned... and extending ... to modify filigree. Other
choices present different grammatical constructions that are not participial modifiers and thus not parallel to
spawned: extends in B is a present-tense verb; it extended in D begins a new clause; and is extending in E
ungrammatically introduces a new predicate. In C,
extended is nonparallel if it is assumed to be a past tense
195
verb form; if it is assumed to be a past participle, it illogically states, as does D, that the filigree extended only in
the past.

2) B

At issue is the need for logical and formal parallelism in a coordinate series. B, the best choice, clearly and
correctly uses parallel noun phrases to list three effects of a drop in oil prices:
a lowering of..., a rally in ..., and
a weakening of....
In place of the correct lower before/ears, choice A uses an incorrect participial adjective,
lowering, that could cause confusion by seeming at first to function as a verb. A also violates parallelism. In C
and D, the use of
along with confuses meaning by making fears about inflation an independent effect, not an
object of
lowering. D and E violate parallelism by substituting an awkward gerund clause for the first noun
phrase.

3) C

A correct sentence must maintain parallel structure. In choice A, the three-part series (to diagnose ...,
deciding,
... or other purposes ...) lacks parallelism. C, the best choice, replaces A's third element with/or such
purposes as;
this phrase functions as a stem for the other two elements, which are recast as two parallel
phrases--
diagnosing ... or deciding .... Thus, choice C not only manages the parallel structure but avoids the
less effective
other purposes such as these at the end of choice A. Choice E uses faulty parallel structure (to
be used..., deciding ..., or the like).
In B and D, which and the use of which introduce sentence elements that
lack antecedents or reference. In addition, D is wordy.

The correct statement is "none of the answers is correct" as we are referring to status (i.e. wrong or correct) of each element in a group of answers (none => no one)

Here are my answers: -

  1. Question is in past tense. So remove B, D.
Whether is used when there is uncertainty. In the question, it is mentioned that investigators did not doubt. So use of that is more appropriate. That leaves us only C and E. In C, had not doubted is unidiomatic. E is right answer.

  1. Reason is because is wrong. Remove A, E.
If is a condition. Remove B.
IN C, Sentence is not proper.
D is correct answer.
  1. c
  2. B

(A) did not doubt whether the body recovered from the river was
(B) have no doubt whether the body recovered from the river was
(C) had not doubted that the body recovered from the river was
(D) have no doubt whether the body recovered from the river was that of
(E) had no doubt that the body recovered from the river was that of
Agreed, since tenses match correctly in C and E, but "had not doubted" in C is incorrect construction, E is the appropriate choice

2. One reason why more young people lose their virginity during the summer than at other times of the year undoubtedly is because school vacations give adolescents more free time.

(A) One reason why more young people lose their virginity during the summer than at other times of the year undoubtedly is because
(B) If young people lose their virginity more during the summer than other seasons, it is undoubtedly because
(C) One undoubtable reason that young people lose their virginity more during the summer than other times is
(D) One reason more young people lose their virginity during the summer than at other times of the year is undoubtedly that
(E) Young people lose their virginity more often during the summer undoubtedly because, for one reason,
NOT SURE

B & C are incorrect - they say lose "more virginity" while original sentence states "more people" lose their virginity.
E appears awkward construction - "undoubtedly because, for one reason"
A is incorrect - reason, why, because - the presence of these 3 words seeems superflous (especially reason & because)
D is the correct choice

3. Originally published in 1950, Some Tame Gazelle was Barbara Pyms first novel, but it does not read like an apprentice work.

(A) does not read like an apprentice work
(B) seems not to read as an apprentice work
(C) does not seem to read as an apprentice work would
(D) does not read like an apprentice work does
(E) reads unlike an apprentice work

C looks more suitable to me - not all first novels seem like apprentice works, does in D specifies certainty in case of ALL apprentice works, "would" in C specifies normal expected behaviour

4. Out of Americas fascination with all things antique have grown a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that are bringing back the chaise lounge, the overstuffed sofa, and the claw-footed bathtub.

(A) things antique have grown a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that are bringing
(B) things antique has grown a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that is bringing
(C) things that are antiques has grown a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that bring
(D) antique things have grown a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that are bringing
(E) antique things has grown a market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that bring

Market is singular so "has grown" is correct - narrowed down to B, C and E. Now again "bring" is plural and market is singular (market is bringing back, not the furnitures], so we eliminate C and E.
Correct ans. is B

(D) One reason more young people lose their virginity during the summer than at other times of the year is undoubtedly that

To me this choice is too wordy.. "one reason.. is undoubtedly that".. we dont need this extra "undoubtedly that" here I guess..

It also sounds awkward while speaking aloud.. it sounds better when we add 'why' to it.. "One reason WHY more young people lose their virginity during the summer than at other times of the year is undoubtedly that"

what say..??..

Yes, agreed to an extent, the "why" might make it more clear, but it is optional since we still have "that" (one reason.....that....)

Choice (E) is even more awkward..for 2 main reasons:

a) What is "undoubtedly"?
Acc to me, the reason is "undoubted" and as per choice (E), "during summer" is "undoubted".
b) "for one reason" following "because" sounds clumsy..

Please let me know if u agree

regarding the reasons cited above..
a) I find undoubtedly asscoaited with reason.. not summer..
b) "becuase" is part of underlined sentence.. so that would not be included in the final sentence.. Now if you read it without because, hope that makes sense to you..

I wish someone could tell us the OA and also the possible reasoning..

I agree... the answer should be option C.

For option D to be correct it should have been "does not read like an apprentice's work does"

Varun ,
we are to take special care of the 5 SANAM pronouns.. some, all, none ,any ,most. these nouns takes verb forms depending on their usage..
Look at the usage...note the object of the phrase "of __" ..here it's "of the answers..pointing out one among many probable answers.. so it has to take plural verb form. it should be " are"..
again look at.... "none of the money" ( a bit awkaward use.. could think of a better example.) .Here note that as the object of the phrase "of money"..uncountable collective use..it should to take a singular verb form.."is"...
yaa..see this.
some of the money "was" ____ but
some of the papers "were".

Hope this helps..

Catfighter,
"has grown" follows the subject "America's fascination".. so it has to be anyway singular..
I think there's wrong adjective use of antique.. if it be in that ways, it has to be "things that are antique..can't we safely use the phrasal expression " antique things" instead to be used as the object..
so, should it be "E" as the correct answer?:|

Aniruddha.. please try and concentrate on the entire sentence, not just the underlined sentence.. it should make sense as a whole... "...market for bygone styles of furniture and fixtures that bringback the chaise lounge, the overstuffed sofa, and the claw-footed bathtub".. doesnt make any sense to me.. this is incorrect sentence for sure..

"things antique" is correct/proper as well.. πŸ˜‰
