GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

How could the answer be B. Aggression is singular. So 'increases' should be used with aggression instead of 'increase'
I think the answer shoud be E.

Surprisingly all answers seem to be wrong... but the closest is D.

A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
(A) beating in unison and adopting
(B) they beat in unison while adopting
(C) beat in unison, and adopt
(D) beating in unison yet adopting
(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt

The OA is D.

But I think, the option C should be correct. It correctly maintains the parallel structure with the rest of the sentence. :nono:

Correct answer is D.

Do not go always to match parallelism. If there are more than one actions, we have to see the importance of action also. here adhere is main action.
Again, We have two choices A and D. But, 'beating in unison' and 'adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another' are giving opposite sense. So, Yet in D is more appropriate.

Option D is correct.

C is out of sync as far as tenses are concerned... maintain the present tense for the entire sentence..C is INCORRECT.

Parallelism dosent mean just matching the suffixes... u must maintain parallel tense, mainly.. hope that helps

Let's try with the elimination approach.. but before that let's note down the important words to remember before we start eliminating options..

"The gyrfalcon", "an Arctic bird of prey", "has survived" >> Implies Singular

"when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970s" >> Period of time in the past

(A) extinctionits numbers are now five times greater than >> 'its' 'numbers' 'greter than' = AWKWARD/WORDY
(B) extinctionits numbers are now five times more than >> 'its' 'numbers' 'more than' = AWKWARD/WORDY
(C) extinctiontheir numbers now fivefold what they were >> PLURAL = WRONG
(D) extinctionnow with fivefold the numbers they had >> PLURAL = WRONG
(E) extinctionnow with numbers five times greater than >> Makes complete sense as a whole. The tenses are in place and so is the singular nature of the subject in entire sentence = RIGHT

I would have checked option E

Whats the correct answer please?

the correct answer is 'E'. 'Likelihood that... wil happen.. ' is correct structure. 'D' is close but awkward..it would have been better if instead of 'imitative violence to erupt' => eruption of imitative violence...

It seems D is better, E unnecessariy brings in future indefinite,,whereas the principal clause stays in present indefinite..si it sould be D..A,b,c are not to be ther as it has to take the verb increase is qualifying NOUN agression..so 3rd person singular number..thus increases has to be there in the answer.

Yes the logic is correct..the phrase could still have been in present indefinite form but that it a universal, it is better to be in present contunious form of the verb..

Note that it's another principal clause that starts after the semicolon..The pronoun should refer properly to the Noun used in the 1st clause... the falcron..( a genre of bird species)..so it should be in the start...the pronoun should be it..it is following the NOUN falcron and not it's number..
read "it's numbers"..i.e varun's friends..nothing wrong there..now eliminate and note that B fits best ..though I am not sanguine..
Hope it helps..

"its numbers are...more than.."

Let's turn the tables... suggest why should E not be the answer..??.. (not that I am saying I am right and you are wrong..or otherwise.. but I just want to see the option E being proved incorrect from your lenses..u know what I mean.. ;))

Varun..
read the whole sentence now with E as the part inserted...don't u think this becomes a Run on a sentence..E could have made sense in a way ike...
E.... The gyrfalconďźŒan Arctic bird of prey,WHICH has survived a close brush with extinction, now with numbers five times greater than..... the pronoun now has a clear antecedent..

Hope I made sense... 😃

@Varun & Aniruddha .....hey dudes ..stop fightin....both of u are wrong 😃 :)...so chillax ..me thinks answer is A...

A - Correct - uses a singular pronoun, its, to refer to the singular antecedent The gyrfalcon, and it properly uses the construction its numbers are now ... greater than.

B - incorrect - the construction its numbers are ...more is not idiomatic: there are more birds, but not more numbers...numbers are always greater than or less than smthing not more than :P

C, D - incorrect - use a plural pronoun, their or they, to refer to a grammatically singular antecedent, The gyrfalcon.

D, E - incorrect - wrongly use a phrase introduced by now with to modify The gyrfalcon. In both choices, the phrase incorrectly seems to be modifying
extinction; a new clause with a present tense verb is needed to state what the gyrfalcon's numbers are now.

Though i believe that to make the comparison complete the sentence should have been smthing like this :
The gyrfalcon, an arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction;its numbers are now five times greater than what they were when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's.

In the original sentence the numbers are incorrectly comapred to the usage of DDT in the 1970's.

Saurav
Here the Noun in question is it's numbers .... number of birds is greater then..
bird's number is more... although I think number itself is a plural..so why use numbers... u may be right..

Hi

Agreement + Structure
The original sentence contains no errorsEach alternative introduces an error or changes the meaning of the original sentenceThe semicolon correctly connects the closely related ideas in the two independent clausesThe gyrfalcon is the antecedent for its in the second phrase
A CorrectThe original sentence correctly uses a singular pronounitsto refer to the singular antecedent gyrfalconand it properly uses the construction its numbers are...greater than
B The use of more instead of greater inappropriately implies there are now more numbersrather than more gyrfalcons
C The pronoun their is plural and incorrect since the antecedent gyrfalcon is singular
D The pronoun they is plural and incorrect since the antecedent gyrfalcon is singularcomma usage introduces a confusing phrase seeming to modify extinction
E Comma usage introduces a confusing phrase seeming to modify extinction
The correct answer is A

naah.. I was just trying to figure out an approach other than mine.. that's about it.. ;)

maybe you got the OA explanation, so u knw the correct answer.. however the singular/plural mix up is pretty evident in the sentence you have proposed.. doesnt sound coherent to me...

this was an intersting one nevertheless..
Option D is correct.

C is out of sync as far as tenses are concerned... maintain the present tense for the entire sentence..C is INCORRECT.

Parallelism dosent mean just matching the suffixes... u must maintain parallel tense, mainly.. hope that helps

Hi Varun,

I know, I may be stupid. But can you please explain, how the 'C' option is not in present tense.

Thanks.

could you kindly expatiate on the singular/plural mix up that u are talking about in the sentence i had proposed ...

it is evidently not so evident to me ../ ...gyrfalcon is singular so a singular pronoun "its" is used to refer to it...numbers is plural so a plural pronoun they is used ..."numbers were five times greater than what they were " ..seems perfectly fine to me ...
