Hi saurav ,
I also marked D for the same question , but on a second thought C also seems convincing-
In 1933 the rubber, clothing, and shipbuilding industries put into effect a six-hour workday, believing it a seeming permanent accommodation rather than a temporary expedient for what many observers thought was an economy made overproductive by advances in technology.

(C) believing that it was not a temporary expedient but a seeming permanent accommodation to what many observers thought of as a
(D) not as a temporary expedient but as a seemingly permanent accommodation to what many observers thought was

he opening underlined part is a perfect sentence with clear meaning , so the next paart must be describing it in further details.believing clearly refers to ship....industries, and it refers to six hours workday. But is used in the right context with parallellism maintained
here , I belive - seeming is used as an adjective sense only with permanent accomadation is used as one complete word( like good morning).
believe requires a direct clause or phrase starting with THAT.
The last part- thought was in D??????????
In C thought of as an is more clear.
Moreover , I am not sure of but as usage.

post your explanation , then we can again discuss it.

ur greatly mistaken my dear friend ..good morning is not one word ..morning is a noun and good is an adj describing the morning ( some quality of the morn ing)...similarly permanent accommodation is not one single word ...accommodation is the noun and permanent is the adjective describing the accommodation ( what kind of a accommodation it is )....D ..usage of not as...but as is perfect in accordance with the idiom not as ...maintains parallelism in accordance with the idiom ( not X but Y ) ....

n last but not the least.. as if the "seeming seemingly" error wasnt enough in C theres a redundant a also at the end of the sentence .. i rest my case here !!!

I think a dictionary search for good morning will do to clear that.Yours approach may be right but I believe we need to have further support for this.

hi...
i m comfuded......

though B sounds to be the correct one.....
but even the usage of the word "supporting" raised few doubts.....
Kindly explain me the usage of this -ing word.....
thanks

i am actucually confused between b and c

D,E is incorrect as it ends with and....ther's another "and" , it becomes ambigious..
C can be easily made out as wrong...
Noe notice the full sentence..here something is being said in support of a theory being proposed and not established..
so... theory that and not theory of..should be correct ..also it has to in the present continuous form of the verb ..something found in the recent past and is going on..

am I correct?
1.Judge Bonham denied a motion to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to a hotel.
(A) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to
(B) that would have allowed members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of confined to
(C) under which members of the jury are allowed to go home at the end of each day instead of confining
them in
(D) that would allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than confinement in
(E) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

2.As measured by the Commerce Department, corporate profits peaked in the fourth quarter of 1988 and
have slipped since then, as many companies have been unable to pass on higher
(A) and have slipped since then, as many companies have been unable to pass on higher costs
(B) and have slipped since then, the reason being because many companies have been unable to pass on
higher costs
(C) and slipped since then, many companies being unable to pass on higher costs
(D) but, many companies unable to pass on higher costs, they have slipped since then
(E) yet are slipping since then, because many companies were unable to pass on higher costs.

1.Judge Bonham denied a motion to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to a hotel.

(C) under which members of the jury are allowed to go home at the end of each day instead of confining them in
-----"instead of to confine them to" seems too wordy although correct. the subordinate clause should start with that/ under (wrong preposition) .. .."C" finishes the sentence best..using the continious--keeps coherrence with the run on the sentence..

2.As measured by the Commerce Department, corporate profits peaked in the fourth quarter of 1988 and
have slipped since then, as many companies have been unable to pass on higher
(E) yet are slipping since then, because many companies were unable to pass on higher costs.

this seems to be the correct..a,b,c is incorrect--use of and..amongst D & E....D the pronoun they brings ambiguity about the subject..So "E"..

Am i makin sence? argue......:)

1. Motion to is the correct idiom .this leaves A and E .. in E , instead of requires -ing form of the verb so E wins..

2. A it is ...it observes an appropriate sequence of verb tenses :a single act in the past (peaked) followed by an extended activity reaching to the present (have slipped)....in B reason being because is unidiomatic...In C, the use of
the simple past slipped with since then is unidiomatic because since then denotes extended time and hence needs the present perfect form of the tense .

(A) Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged

Can anyone explain when should EXCEPT be used and when BESIDES?

Try to understand the meaning of the words -
Except as a preposition means with exclusion, rejection, or exception; everything other than; it carries the meaning of "minus".
Besides (alternatively given as "beside" in some dictionaries) as a preposition means "in addition to, or "plus".
