GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

Hey u sure that the answer to the 4th ques is E and not D coz i have got all others correct except for the 4th

option D for the 4th ques says :

D.The resulting sales figures having been so depressed that..

now the usage of having been is certainly wrong in this option; isnt it ??So how can D be the answer.

I will repost the ques again n give the reason why i chose E as the answer

4.Recent indications of weakness in the economy have led consumers to be more conservative with their purchases; so depressed have sales figures been as a result that the government has launched several initiatives to actively encourage consumer spending.

A.So depressed have sales figures been as a result that
B.The sales figures have been so depressed as a result that
C.As a result, so depressed has the sales been that
D.The resulting sales figures having been so depressed that
E.The sales figures have been so depressed that, as a result,

on second thoughts E also seems to be wrong ...it has mispaced the modifier as a result( which has to modify the sales figure ) ...B also makes the same error ...C has a subject verb agreement error ( has ..sales ).. D i think has one more error coz it cant function as a stand alone sentence ( and a stand alone sentence is needed after a colon ..there is no main verb in it..everything seems to be modifying the sales figure )..what is the source of this ques btw ??

Any takers for my explanation ..this is the best that i could do

Hi , Your concern taken . The correct answer is A.I made atypo error. will rectify my post.Your explanation for E is right.

The source is xerox sheets handed over to me,having questions collected from various sources and the answers are also collected by discussion,So many of the answers may be wrong too.
I also clicked E initially bcoz I found the structure convicncing but forgot the as a result part.

Its even good if we can discuss the explanations for the rest of the questions.I believe in GMAT SC , the most important is not to get the right answer but to eliminate the wrong choices perfectly. So better , if we can discuss each choices.

hi saurav,vikas
could you pls explain ans for 2,3,5.

hi saurav,vikas
could you pls explain ans for 2,3,5.

in ques 2 3 n 5 which two ( am assuming that u would have been to eliminate the rest 3 )options are u confused between ..i will try to help if i can ..
These are some of the most difficult SCs that i have come across ,so i may not b able to explain convincingly y i chose an option over the others .
So u just post the particular doubt that u have in a question ( even if u hv doubts in all the options ..no probs... but am sure that in some of the ques u will definitely b able to eliminate atleast 2 or 3 choices ) n i will try my best to help you out.

Infact y dont we all ( u , me , Vikas n all other puys ) come together as suggested by Vikas n try to eliminate all the wrong choices n zero in on the right answer .

You chip in with your inputs n I will do my bit ..

C.The number of female students is as many as that of male students currently enrolled in medical school.
D.As great as the number of female is the number of male students currently enrolled in medical school.
E.Female and male students are currently enrolled in equal numbers in medical schools.

As......as is the right idiom to use here.So all other choices are less right.I believe A is also right but B is a concise way of saying the same thing( the equivalent................)Same reason is for C.as great the number sounds awkward in D.E also sounds right but it seems that the purpose of study is to compare the nos of female with male.

(E) The Silicon Valley Millionaires Club was a rather unexpected source from which relief for the thousands of traumatized victims of one of the worst natural calamities to hit the eastern coast of South America came.

Guys why is B wrong
Relief for the thousands of traumatized victims of one of the worst natural calamities to hit the eastern coast of South America came from a rather unexpected source - the Silicon Valley Millionaires' Club.

Guys why is B wrong

My Take A.
The subject concerned here is -relief for the victims.
All other choices either modify relief or source.
For B the opening phrase is supposed to modify relief , but the construction doesnt seem to do so.

correct idiom is connection between ...present tense should be used ..that leaves us with C and D ..eating is better than eating of ..also apparent connection is better than connection that is apparent between..D wins ..am i right vikas ??

i agree ...the introductory phrase, " For the thousands of traumatized victims of one of the worst natural calamities to hit the eastern coast of South America" in B seems to be modifying relief which obviously doesnt make much sense

the key is parallelism or ellipsis ..it is not necessary to use students before female ..its implied ..think of it as , " as many female (students ..implied ) as male students...most of the options in this ques are correct ( except D ) but B wins because its the most concise way of conveying what the author wants to

Yes Saurabh ,Answer is right and the reasonig is also precise. However , I will like to post my query here-
In this question , The moment I see IF , my views were of a conditional sentence, so I straight away removed all choices starting with IF as no choice was in line with the conditional sentence structure (I may not be right!!!!).I also used the reason between X and Y and hit the answer as E.So tell me whats wrong in the approach.
After giving a second thought , D sounds better to me but still I will like to know the prob with my approach.

Right explanation.
female is an adjective and thus does not take plural form as we have plural forms only for nouns.
coming to usual expression found 'females', it is incorrect to use 'females' for 'women'. it is not accepted English.

Hey man , what are u saying?Female is both a noun and an adjective.
female as a noun mean-any living being capable of giving birth.
Female as an adjective can be used to charcterize the quality of woman.e:g-a female chorus, the female lead in the team.

I am not sure of the use of females in place of women.
The problem with the question is NOT the choice between the given two (except v/s besides), for other points are more important.

Please see if (not whether!) the following explanation helps.

Option B is with redundant 'it' at the tail-end. This is also wrong with the misplaced prepositional phrase 'with...'

Option C is with dangling modifier error with prepositional phrase at the beginning of the sentence. The use of 'being ...' is incorrect, for it implies stage rather than action. furthermore, creates wordy structure is created.

option D is with dangling modifier error with participle modifier phrase. except this error, there is no problem with option D.

option E is also a dangling modifier error as the first prepositional stage wrongly modifies the subject which succeeds the underlines part. the second 'with' prepositional phrase after performance results is misplaced as it is kept after 'performance' wrongly modifying it. 'staging done by' is wordy for one word 'staged' would have served the purpose.

Hi can you make the explanation more clear. I agree with the A as answer.I have used the correct sequence of tense and elimation of ING to eliminate choices.
The complex tax dispute between the Covered Bridge Mall and Harris Township is not
likely to be adjudicated for several years, and in the meantime both sides are intent on

(A) both sides are intent on creating difficulties for the other
(B) both sides are intent on creating difficulties for each other
(C) each side is intent on creating difficulties for the another
(D) each side is intent on creating difficulties for one another
(E) the sides are both intent on creating difficulties for each other
