GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

1. C
elements that form a list should be parallel. providing...helping...and establishing. possisive form of Children should be children's fund. Childrens' in D is wrong usage.

2. A
correct idiom to express range is everything from X to Y . that leaves us with A and D. In D there's no subject for appears. remove the clause in between and sentence reads 'the nations semiconductor industry appears that it has....'

3.C
usage 'discriminate between X and Y' sounds right here. in the mix of genuine diamonds and imitated diamonds, an apprentice can discriminate between X and Y. I might be wrong in the interpretation here. discrimination doesn't seems inappropriate usage to me ;)

4. C
'Adult survivors of child abuse traditionally have had little or no chance' this doesn't look like main clause, since idea is not clear, so subordinate clause seems out of place. Main clause has to be completed by adding a phrase.

So answer has to be among B/C/D/E.

B. you can recognize the symptoms yourself, but you get them treated (from doctor or mechanic etc) so infinitive form doesn't fit.

C. Yes. You get symptoms recognized and treated from specialist.

D. again participle form doesn't sound right.

E. Adult survivors is a plural so his or her is wrong.

This may not be convincing explanation, but I'm pretty sure idiom or participle aren't required in this case :)

Pls post answers soon.

Thx.

The answers are right. However , I have doubt in question no 3.
I have learnt that if the choice is between similiar items, use discriminate x from y but if the choice is between two different items use discriminate between X and Y.

The noble prize in chemistry was awarded to three scientist for their discovery that plastic can be made electrically conductive-an advance that has led to improvements in film.television screens and windows.
A.
B.That plastics can be made electrically conductive-this advance leading
C.that plastic can be made elctrically conductive, and this advance led
D.of plastic's ability to be made electrically conductive, with this advance leading.

Main clause: The noble prize in chemistry was awarded to three scientist for their discovery
Now for additional information, you need to have a clause that can provide specific information about the discovery. We can do this by introducing a noun clause starting with either that or which. (so A, B, or C could be correct).

Any subordinate clause that points back at some noun or clause can't use personal pronoun that is not clear.

check A, it uses 'this advance' what is it referring to? participle 'leading' also doesn't have subject of reference. Hence wrong.

B. use of 'and' is unnecessary. There's no need of coordinate clause, since this is continuation of the same idea. next part of the sentence is going to convey specific details about the discovery, so again that does the work clearly.

Notice Plastic's ability in D. Another reason for it to be wrong.

What the source of these questions? I believe some words are missing from the options. I'll try to answer by choosing the best option from among the choices provided here.

1. C
2. D
3. E (Although I think correct option would have been 'than by those who were under it'
4. D (Again I would choose E but it looks like one as is missing from E)
5. D

i agree with vikas ..except for :

3. A ( Although I also think that correct option would have been 'than by those who were under it' to maintain parallelism)
4.D (not only coz an as is missing in E but also coz even if that " as" was there in the option; it still wudnt have helped to maintain the parallelism in the sentence. Also in E was is missing after " thought ". )

I will wait for some more replies and then post the answers.

B.Can complicate pregnancy, and increases low birth weight risks
C.Can complicate pregnancy, increasing the risks of low birth weight
D.Can complicate pregnancy by increasing the risks of low birth weight.
E.Complicating pregnancy by increasing the risks of low birth weight.

Ans : D
Exp : Here two phrases in parallel, smoking increases the risk of lung diseases and (smoking) can complicate pregnancy by increasing the risks of low birth weight
if by is eliminated it is as if there are three phrases in parallel and only last phrase takes 'and' not second phrase ( as in A,B) and last phrase cannot even be seperated by comma as in C.
For E. warned that smoking complicating pregnancy .. is awkward.

Hey u sure that the answer to the 4th ques is D and not E coz i have got all others correct except for the 4th

option D for the 4th ques says :

D.The resulting sales figures having been so depressed that..

now the usage of having been is certainly wrong in this option; isnt it ??So how can D be the answer.

I will repost the ques again n give the reason why i chose E as the answer

4.Recent indications of weakness in the economy have led consumers to be more conservative with their purchases; so depressed have sales figures been as a result that the government has launched several initiatives to actively encourage consumer spending.

A.So depressed have sales figures been as a result that
B.The sales figures have been so depressed as a result that
C.As a result, so depressed has the sales been that
D.The resulting sales figures having been so depressed that
E.The sales figures have been so depressed that, as a result,

on second thoughts E also seems to be wrong ...it has mispaced the modifier as a result( which has to modify the sales figure ) ...B also makes the same error ...C has a subject verb agreement error ( has ..sales ).. D i think has one more error coz it cant function as a stand alone sentence ( and a stand alone sentence is needed after a semi-colon ..there is no main verb in it..everything seems to be modifying the sales figure )..what is the source of this ques btw ??

Any takers for my explanation ..this is the best that i could do
